chunks to the soda water and the result was aninstant hit with the public.

In the Victorian era of the 1890's, many peopleactually thought soda water had intodcating powers. The town fathers of Evanston, ll[nois, actuillypass€d a law against the sale of ice cream sodas onSunday in an attempt to stem their rising popularitywith the.citzenry. To get around the letter of the newlaw. an enterprising drugstore fountain operatoroffered only the ice cream and flavoring syrups, leaving out the soda water. He called the concoctionan "ice cream Sunday" - but later changed thespelling of the word to "Sundae" because the localbiSl.llS objected to naming an ice cream after theSabbath Day. Mr. George Giffy's ice cream parlor inManitowoc. Wisconsin added to the ledger. A littlegirl asked for a dish of his special ice cteam. Mr.Giffu said he only sold it on Sunday. "Then this mustbe Sunday." said the little girl. "because that's whatI want." And so "Sundae" became an any dayspecial ice cream dish.

The ice cream cone was invented in a hum7 whenan ice crearn peddler at the St. Louis World's Fair inl9O4 ran out ol containers. He quickly got a supplyof waffles or wafers and shaped them into cones tohold his product. The result was another instant hit.

Anne Aohburn brought the ice cream cone to TexastIt was at that same

World's Fair that Annefuhbum (Grandmother ofthe cunent President ofPolar Bear-fuhbum's)saw the first ice creamcone and decided shemust tell her father aboutit. Anne was at the World'sFair because she wasvoted the most popularschool teacher in the IndianTenitory. She knew herdaddy. William L.fuhburn. would beinterested in the ice creamcone because he owned adairy farm and had justrecently bought an icecream plant in Denison,Texas. The Ashbums were making and selling theirice cream in packages and gtving home delivery.Anne told her dad of the success of the cone idea atthe World's Fair and soon the first ice cream storewas founded in Denison. It too was an instant hit.

The seven Ashbum sons all started getting into theice cream business. When Martin. the oldest son.opened the Dallas store. he brought Anne's son.J.C. Brigham. to manag€ the store. Mr. Brigham

managed the store from 1935 to 1941 until lvlr-Ashbum helped him set up his own store in OallrCliff. He called his ice cream Polar Bear, but boughthis ice cream from his uncle. Polar Bear built ib ownplant at its present location - 1207 N. Zang -- in1950 and made the ice cream by the sameold fashioned. Ashbum formula.

In 1970, production of ice cream for the twocompanies was consolidated into one plant. PolarBear started managlng the fuhbum stores in the fallof 7972 and has since been advertising the twogood names together as Polar Bear-fuhburn's leeCream.

In the Fall 7977 , the Ashburn's family returnerdto Ft. Worth. The Ft. Worth stores, which, by theway, were started by one of the original Ashbur:n'ssons, were purchased by the parent company,Polar Bear-Ashburn's in Dallas.

In early 1,979 the Denison and Sherman Stor+eswere added consolidating all the Polar Bear-Ashburn's Stores under one company.

The company is managed by Bennie Brighamr, great grandson of the founder of the first Ashburrn'sIce Cream store.

When it comes to making ice cream, we've gclt ahistory of making great ice cream. We think, thelbest ice cream you can buy.
