This programme is designed to provide Registered Nurses and Registered Health Professionals with an integrated, supported theoretical and practical programme of study to ensure the development of specialty knowledge and skills required of a health professional working in the New Zealand context.
This two paper programme can be completed over two years. All papers are 17 weeks in duration and each paper is a combination of online and short block tutorials delivered at our Porirua campus.
PAPER INFORMATIONHSC8603: Forensic Practice 1 (45 credits)This paper offers health professionals working with people using forensic psychiatric care services the opportunity to further develop their skills and knowledge in this area. Students critically analyse their practice and continue to provide care that is clinically and professionally appropriate to that setting. A strong focus of the paper is on the development of knowledge of the parameters and approaches to care.
Modules covered include: > Historical cultural and institutional influences shaping forensic practice > Medico-legal aspects of care > Technologies and interventions – psychopharmacology > Models of practice > Researched based professional practice
HSC8604: Forensic Practice 2 (45 credits)The purpose of this paper is to expand the student’s ability to relate key concepts of forensic psychiatric care within different settings. Students critically analyse their practice and continue to provide care that is clinically and professionally appropriate to that setting. Students will explore:
> Issues in forensic psychiatric practice > Leadership > Ethical decision making > Professional practice
POSTGRADUATE CERTIFICATE IN SPECIALTY CARE – FORENSIC PRACTICEThis programme reflects current and developing research-based practice, in relation to health care delivery.

QUALIFICATIONPapers are NZQA accredited at Level 8 and approved by Nursing Council of New Zealand. Graduates gain 45 credits per paper towards the Postgraduate Certificate in Specialty Care
