Petroleum EngineerA petroleum engineer is involved in nearlyall stages of oil and gas eld evaluation, development and production. The goal of apetroleum engineer is to maximise hydrocarbonrecovery at a minimum cost while maintaininga strong emphasis on reducing all associatedenvironmental problems.
Petroleum engineers are divided into severalgroups: petroleum geologists nd hydrocarbons
by analysing subsurface structures withgeological and geophysical methods; reservoirengineers work to optimise production of oiland gas via proper well placement, productionlevels, and enhanced oil recovery techniques;production engineers manage the interfacebetween the reservoir and the well through such tasks as (but not limited to) perforations, sandcontrol, articial lift, downhole ow control anddownhole monitoring equipment; and drillingengineers manage the technical aspects ofdrilling both production and injection wells.
They all work in multidisciplinary teams alongsideother engineers, scientists, drilling teams andcontractors.
RENEWABLESAn EU-wide study estimated that renewableenergy has the potential to create over 900,000
new jobs by 2020. Studying renewable energyresources and sustainability provides essentialskills and knowledge to enter a wide range ofroles in a rapidly growing sector. Careers canrange from technical-level jobs in areas such asdesign, engineering and planning, through toresearch and development, consultancy andproject management.
Reservoir EngineerReservoir engineers analyse the productionpotential of a petroleum reservoir. They study the behaviour and characteristics of a petroleumreservoir to determine the drilling and extractionmethods that should be used to optimise oil orgas recovery. They gather data from varioussources to produce a development plan, usingcomputer models to simulate productionconditions. This enables them to identify risksand forecast the likely outcome of events andpossible interventions, to maximise reservoiryields and performance. Decisions on thenumbers and locations of wells depend on these models, as do development programmes, such as commissioning additional wells orrecommending the employment of enhancedrecovery technologies (e.g. water injection tosimulate ow). Reservoir engineers monitorand update the model as necessary during thelifecycle of the reservoir.
Project EngineerThe role of the project engineer can often bedescribed as that of a liaison between the projectmanager and the technical disciplines involvedin a project. The project engineer is also often the primary technical point of contact for thecustomer.
Typically responsibilities include schedulepreparation and resource forecasting forengineering and other technical activitiesrelating to the project. They assure the accuracyof nancial forecasts, which tie in to projectschedules and ensure projects are completedaccording to project plans. Project engineersmanage project team resources and training, and develop extensive project managementexperience and expertise. When project teams are structured so that multiple specialitydisciplines report to the project engineer, then two important responsibilities of this role areinter-discipline coordination and overall qualitycontrol of the work.
Drilling EngineerA drilling engineer develops, plans, costs, schedules and supervises the operationsnecessary in the process of drilling oil and gaswells. They are involved from initial well design to testing, completion and abandonment.Engineers are employed on land, on offshoreplatforms, or on mobile drilling units either by the operating oil company, a specialist drillingcontractor or a service company. The rolecan involve administering drilling and servicecontracts, engineering design, the planningof wells and supervising the drilling crew on site.Drilling engineers work with other professionals, such as geologists and geoscientists, to monitordrilling progress, oversee safety managementand ensure the protection of the environment.
Subsea EngineerSubsea engineers are involved in any structuralengineering taking place beneath the surface of the sea. They design, build and install mechanicalsystems used under the ocean, such asunderwater pipelines and pumps, transportationequipment, subsea wellheads and offshoredrilling rigs. They need to have a good workingknowledge of all types of underwater equipmentand vehicles. They may also be involved inunderwater data collection, which entails usingimaging technology or remotely operated
vehicles to gather information.Subsea engineers use both traditional and high- tech tools, such as computer-aided design (CAD)systems, to create realistic geometric models ofdrills and rigs, which can simulate and analyse the effects and potential problems of designs(e.g. machine malfunction and slowdown). Theymay also work with oceanographers and otherscientists to determine locations for drillingas well as teams of other engineers andprofessionals to design an interface between thesubsea structures and the well.
Asset IntegrityManagerAn Asset Integrity Manager is responsible forensuring an asset performs its required functioneffectively and efciently whilst protectinghealth, safety and the environment. The industrydenition of Asset Integrity Management is that it is the means of ensuring that the people, systems, processes and resources that deliverintegrity are in place, in use and will perform
when required over the whole lifecycle of theasset. Asset Integrity Managers are often thecompany focal point for the asset life cycle, from the design of new facilities to maintenancemanagement to decommissioning.
An effective Asset Integrity Managementsystem will maintain the asset in a t-for-servicecondition while extending its remaining life in themost reliable, safe and cost-effective manner.Asset Integrity Managers are vitally importantat helping to lead organisations toward sociallyresponsible management, looking after the safetyof people, the prevention of environmentalpollution and minimising risks of disasters toassist company protability.
CAREER OPTIONS in…ENGINEERING
