You want lower operating costs.
Less downtime. Better
communications. You want to
work with fewer parts. In less
space. With more sophisticated
capabilities. But easier operation.
You need the freedom to make
last-minute changes. Or take
advantage of quick-ship
opportunities. And you want
it all with the assurance of
fit-and-forget reliability.
modularity
This changes everything.
WL_UL489_Brochure.qxd 11/18/04 10:52 AM Page 2
It’s a complicated request. So you turn to a simple concept.
The tangram. An ancient Chinese game in which a few simple
components provide endless possibilities. You take this concept of
tangramlike modularity and apply it to a new breed of breakers.
Suddenly you have unlimited possibilities with steadfast reliability.
It’s called the WL Circuit Breaker.
And it changes everything.
WL_UL489_Brochure.qxd 11/18/04 10:53 AM Page 3
Reconfigure it in minutes. Rely on it for years.
Our new WL Circuit Breaker can change
as quickly as your specifications. Using
a minimal number of parts, you can
configure and reconfigure it
for virtually any application.
The only thing that doesn’t change
is its exceptional reliability.

Easy to use. Easy to choose.
With so many options and so much
flexibility, the WL is the obvious choice
for virtually any application. It supports
systems from 200A to 5000A and
reflects our conviction that no matter
how sophisticated a solution may be,
it still must be easy to use. Easy to
install. And easy to maintain.
Even something as simple as providing
a single, easy-to-read assembled catalog
number can take a lot of hassle out of
ordering new products. It’s our attention
to this kind of detail that makes the WL
such a great breaker to work with.
If a product is known for its reliability,
shouldn’t the support behind it be
just as reliable?
The WL is there when you need it.
So are we. With a reliable sales and
support network that ensures fast
customer delivery times and
quick-ship opportunities.
easy planning
WL_UL489_Brochure.qxd 11/18/04 10:54 AM Page 6
The more demanding
your application, the more
you need this breaker.
Difficult conditions. Tight spaces.
Changing specifications. High standards
for critical systems. The WL was made
for them. And that’s welcome news in
demanding industries.
Compact size for Panelboard and
Switchboard Builders.
Its small footprint and easy operation
make the WL unique. Based on a typical
bill of materials, switchgear with
WL Circuit Breakers uses up to 48 percent
less floor space than other major brands.
Reliability and accuracy for
Engine Generator Manufacturers.
The rugged reliability of the WL ensures
long life. The electronic trip unit tracks
and communicates potential life
expectancy based on contact wear.
A ready-to-close indicator checks system
status to ensure breaker readiness at
a critical time.
Durable construction for Marine and
Petrochemical Equipment Makers.
Designed to last, the attention to detail
even extends to parts such as cover
screws with permanent inserts, instead of
self-tapping bolts, which can be stripped.
The ideal system solution for
Electrical Consultants.
You get multiple-protocol capability
without external breaker hardware.
Not only can the breaker be controlled
remotely, but it can also alert
maintenance personnel via cell
or pager alarms.

State-of-the-art communication
Diagnosis also possible via the Internet
Power Management
Communication is everything.
The WL always keeps watch and always
keeps in touch. It can monitor a variety
of breaker, switch, meter, relay and
motor control functions in your
distribution system––continually
checking for power quality issues
and reporting back to you.
As a result, you can manage the true
energy costs of any process in real time
today… and can plan for expansion and
preventive maintenance tomorrow.
Outages and potential outages are
diagnosed instantly. And, if a serious
event occurs, the WL can even phone
maintenance personnel to alert them,
using cellular paging alarms.
Keep costs low while keeping your
options open.
The metering and monitoring
components that make all this possible
can be ordered separately. These
affordable upgrades require minimal
wiring. They’re just another way that
the WL keeps costs low while keeping
your options open.
Cost-effective entry into
communication.
The standard knob-based ETU745 and
ETU748 trip units offer all options for
future retrofit applications (communication,
display, ground fault protection) and are
equipped with an integrated CubicleBus.
These trip units are priced only slightly
above the base model ETU725 and
the ETU727.
The ETU755 and ETU776 trip units
feature a remote-only interface or
a keypad and backlit graphical
display version respectively.
Cost advantages by modularity.
Metering Function PLUS with triggerable
waveform and harmonic analysis,
COM 16 MODBUS module,
COM 15 PROFIBUS module and all
CubicleBUS I/O modules can be ordered
separately. This allows maximum
flexibility and cost saving.
Minimal wiring effort
if upgraded later.
Any communication option, I/O
or metering function is available
factory installed but can also be
upgraded easily at a later stage.

Exclusive features that fit you better.
Dynamic Arc-Flash Sentry
(Patent Pending) -- A unique feature
of the WL trip unit allows the
system designer to achieve lower
levels of arc-flash energy and
delayed tripping for selective trip
coordination purposes.
Dynamic Arc-Flash Sentry (DAS)
employs the dual protective
setting capability of the 755 and
776 trip units, coupled with the
ability to easily switch to a lower
arc-flash parameter set. A
normal operation parameter set
can be optimized for selective
trip coordination while the
second set is optimized for
lowest arc-flash energy levels.
The dynamic action comes
from the ability to switch from
the normal operation set to the
arc-flash limiting set based on
the presence of personnel as
they approach the flash
protection boundary. A wide
variety of switching methods
may be used based on the needs
of a particular facility. The
capabilities range from fully
automatic switching using
appropriate occupancy sensors
to manual switching via
a key operation.
Extended Instantaneous
Protection(Patent Pending) --
Extended Instantaneous
Protection (EIP), another unique
feature of the WL trip unit,
allows the system designer to
achieve full selective trip
coordination up to the withstand
rating of the frame while also
allowing application of the
breaker up to the interrupting
rating of the frame. The typical
power circuit breaker with an
“LS” trip unit can only be applied
up to its withstand rating,
commonly 85kA or less. For
application on systems with
levels of available fault current
above the withstand rating, the
“LS” power circuit breaker must
employ an instantaneous
override. This instantaneous
override is set at as much as 20%
below the withstand level and
can seriously compromise
selective trip coordination with
downstream breakers. The WL,
equipped with EIP, overcomes
these limitations by providing
full withstand capability and full
coordination, with a minus 0%
tolerance at 85kA on Frame
Size II and 100kA on Size III.
Above fault currents of 20%
higher than the withstand
rating, the EIP function will trip
the breaker instantly to protect
the frame and the system from
these extremely high currents,
150kA on Frame Size III.
