Introduction to UGC-NET/K-SET • The UGC-NET examination is conducted twice in a year- on
last Sundays of June and December months• Please see www.ugc.ac.in and
http://cbsenet.nic.in/cbsenet/welcome.aspx for more details
• In February and August month Employment News the notification for UGC-NET examination is given
• The examination for Science stream is conducted by UGC-CSIR
• Candidates are expected to complete the formalities online by checking the details on UGC website
• The K-SET examination is conducted by a university in Karnataka on rotation basis.
Methodology of Examination• Like UPSC Exams, UGC-NET Examination is
conducted on an Elimination Process by short listing the candidates
• In UPSC-2015 Prelims Exams, 4,65,000 students have appeared
• In Degree exams, those who write exams will pass. But, here with cut-off percentage many candidates are eliminated
• Accuracy in the presentation matters a lot in competitive examinations
• UGC-NET examination is conducted for 84 subjects
• In June, 2015 examination 2,37,000 candidates appeared for the test
• Minimum marks to be obtained and the percentage
For GM candidates: Paper I : 40 marks (40%) Paper II : 40 marks (40%) Paper III : 75 marks (50%)
For OBC/PWD/SC/ST candidates: Paper I : 35 marks (35%) Paper II : 35 marks(35%) Paper III : 60 marks (40%)
• The cut-off percentage may vary from examination to examination• Fixing of Average Marks by the authority on
the basis of number of applicants makes this examination more competitive
• Only such candidates who obtain minimum required marks in each paper separately will be considered for final preparation of result
• The final qualifying criteria will be decided by UGC before declaration of the result
Syllabus for the Examination• For each subject, the syllabus is of the PG
standard.• Candidates are expected to thoroughly know
the important concepts which are taught in the PG classes
• Preferably the syllabus of a Central University is given in the examination
• A fair knowledge of Current Affairs is expected for General Studies paper
• In Paper I, an Assessment of Teaching/Research Aptitude of the candidate is done
• Test of Reasoning Ability, Comprehension, Divergent Thinking and General Awareness is
tested• Paper II and III deal with the Subject of your
choice. Here, a candidate is expected to know exhaustively about the subject of his choice. All questions in these papers are compulsory which cover the entire syllabus
Question Paper Pattern• First Session: Paper I -50x2=100 Marks (out of 60
questions)– General Studies-1hr 15 minutes(objective)• First Session: Paper II-50x2=100 Marks-Questions on
selected Subject-1hr 15 minutes
• Second Session: Paper III-75x2=150 Marks-Questions on selected subject-2hrs 30 minutes
• Candidates have to mark their responses on OMR sheets
• There is no negative marking • A candidate has to score 40% marks each in First Session
and 50% marks in Second Session for the consideration of final preparation of result
Strategy for the preparation of the Examination
• Extensive study of the selected subject by referring to PG level syllabus of a Central University
• Intensive study of the subject after thoroughly understanding the major concepts
• Refer to previous Question papers to understand the Question paper Pattern and Trends in the examination
• Each mark counts while selecting a candidate for JRF/Lectureship
• Be accurate relating to information in each subject• Thorough understanding of the concepts is very
necessary. Eg, difference between Development and Growth
• Candidates are expected to know the concepts relating to Research Methodology of their respective subjects
• Focus on Concepts, rather than theory in a subject• Develop critical analytical skills• Read standard study material, especially reference
books
• Focus on latest developments in the areas of your specialization
• Candidates are expected to know the concepts relating to Research methodology of their respective subjects
• Be familiar with subjects like Types of Research, Review of Literature, Sampling, Collection of Data, Tools for Data Collection, Field Work, Data Analysis, Report Writing etc.
• Learn to write Write-ups relating to important topics
• Understanding of Concepts rather than a mere Collection of Information
