Precision Drive Solutionsfor Marine Propulsion
A safe voyage to the next harbour with Santasalo marine gears
Santasalo has been manufacturing gears for the marine industry for over 40 years and is well known in the market as the original Valmet Marine Gearboxes OEM. During these years, we have equipped nearly 650 vessels with customised gear units, from cargo ships and cruisers to research and rescue vessels, tankers and ice breakers.
The propulsion systems of ocean-going vessels must meet an extremely high standard of operational reliability and efficiency with low noise and vibration levels. The high performance and reliability of our propulsion gear units are ensured by Santasalo’s engineering know-how, manufacturing precision, computer-controlled heat treatment processes and strict quality assurance procedures.
Our propulsion gear units have been designed and built for increased redundancy and safety with maximised availability, quiet operation and better fuel economy of the units.
They are designed and manufactured so that all maintenance and service operations can be completed in the most convenient and time-saving way.
The Santasalo way is to produce safe gear applications for marine propulsion to secure reliable operation in harbours as well as on open seas.
Customised Geared Solutions
Santasalo enjoys a rich gearbox history that spans more than a century and is tied to many well-known brand names such as ASEA, Metso Drives, Rauma-Repola, Sauerwald, Valmet Power Transmission and Wärtsilä*. As a result we are expert at providing reliable, durable, and efficient mechanical power transmission solutions for a wide range of industries. Our large, global installed base of customers demonstrates the confidence customers place in us as a reliable and responsive power transmission partner.
* Previously Santasalo Moventas and its predecessors have manufactured products under the brands shown above. Today, we are independent of these brands and their current owners but continue to offer expert service for these brands, just as we do for our own Santasalo and Moventas branded gear units.

M1VAM1VAM1VASpecial Solutions
In many cases, special solutions are necessary to allow ship designers to plan for extraordinary circumstances. Santasalo supplies customized drive solutions including reduction gears with single and twin engine inputs, PTO/PTI arrangements, two-speed propeller drives and waterjet propulsion. All have been proven in use in demanding marine conditions around the world and have fulfilled customers specifications as well as expectations.
To gain the most from the propulsion machinery often requires the drive system to be tailored. The best results are achieved by working closely with our customers. Together, we will find a solution that best fits your application and meets your full satisfaction.
Two-speed propeller drive - a customised solution
Our two-speed reduction gearbox, manufactured in single- in or twin-in configurations, is designed to improve the utilization of the propulsion machinery. It allows the diesel engine to be run at full speed, while the propeller is driven at either of two speeds.
This gives significant advantages. The lower propeller speed allows the ship to proceed at creeping pace. But full power can still be produced by the shaft alternator. The solution is ideal for any vessel requiring low speed in vibration-free conditions and large amounts of electrical power. This includes passenger and research vessels or cruise ships, ferries and trawlers.
Locked-train system
The propulsion gear drive is a two-stage coaxial reduction gear unit with the so-called locked-train concept. In this design the power of the electric motor is evenly distributed between the two intermediate shafts (branches). The torsionally flexible intermediate shafts compensate for possible load differences between the branches. This design provides redundancy in case of a bearing or a gear failure in one of the branches.
Coupling configuration to improve ship safety
In the event of engine failure at sea, Santasalo’s PTI drive with its unique clutch solution will make it possible to propel the ship away from hazards. Should it become necessary for the ship to change berth, the shaft alternator can again be used as a motor to drive the propeller.
The coupling configuration features a combination of a multi-disc clutch and a gear coupling which have been built together with a Santasalo gearbox. It forms a versatile PTO/PTI system that improves machinery-related safety on ships and enhances total economy. It can also be used to boost the vessels propulsive power, for example, when the ship is towing, operating in ice, or sailing through rough seas.
The other Santasalo PTO/PTI -concept features a single input/single output gearbox, three hydraulic multi-disk clutches, which are incorporated in the gearbox, and a PTI drive. The main clutch is for engaging the propeller shaft, while the two others are for the PTO and PTI drive respectively. The PTI drive includes a pony motor to increase the speed of the shaft generator to the set synchronous speed.

Housing
The housing is of welded steel structure with relatively thick walls and ribs to give sufficient rigidity and to reduce noise. The housing is stress relieved after welding. Parts of the housing are bolted to each other. Fitting bolts are used at the thrust bearing.
Shafts
The pinion shaft is made of case hardened or through hardened steel. At the bearings the shaft journals are machined to sufficient smoothness and accuracy of the shape. Cylindrical shaft end is provided with a keyway.
The output shaft is made of through hardened steel. Forged flanges for the thrust bearing and the propeller shaft connection are made when the shaft is equipped with plain bearings. When rolling bearings are used the shaft end is cylindrical with a keyway.
Gears
The pinion is made of case hardened steel while the bull wheel can be made of case hardened or through hardened steel. The pinion and the wheel have single helical and precision-ground teeth with optimum corrections to ensure a low structure borne noise level.
Bearings
Bearing types are dependent on selected gear type. The pinion and the output shaft can be equipped either with rolling or with plain bearings while the PTO-shaft is generally fitted with rolling bearings. The thrust bearing is mounted into the gear housing. It can take thrust to both directions and is of self-aligning type.
Clutch
The input shaft can be equipped with hydraulic multi- disc clutch. The clutch is hydraulically operated, spring released and controlled by a solenoid valve. The inner discs are made of steel, the outer ones have a friction lining of sintered bronze. The clutch is operated and lubricated by the hydraulic system of the gearbox. The clutch is equipped with an accumulator or a valve system for smooth engagement.
Lubrication and control oil system
The gear housing serves as an oil sump. A shaft-driven lube oil pump supplies oil to the gear meshes and bearings through a double filter and an oil cooler. The cooler is seawater resistant. The lube oil system is equipped with a thermostatic valve. The control oil pump supplies oil to the clutch through a filter, a pressure adjusting valve and a control valve. The piping and the stand-by pump are built on the gear.
Instrumentation
The lube and control oil system is equipped with switches and sensors according to the requirements of classification societies for unmanned engine room. They are wired to a terminal box mounted on the gear unit.
Additional equipment
• One or more PTO’s• PTI-drives for electric-motor and for pony-motor• Flange for pinion shaft• Flange for output shaft in case it is equipped with rolling bearings• Hollow-bored output shaft and a mounting flange for an OD-box for CP-propeller
