At this week’s P&C Meeting I mentioned a book that I had just read and thought it was really useful – both as a father and a Principal.
It is a new title by Australian author David Gillespie called Teen Brain. Gillespie looks at the neuroscience of the developing teenage brain and how this leaves teenagers vulnerable to the addictive nature of screens. Even though he goes into some depth with the science behind this, the book is actually very entertaining. I particularly enjoyed how Gillespie uses a comparison with cars to describe the development of kids’ brains. He describes small children’s brains as “cute little dodgem cars” that, during puberty, develop into the “turbo charged sports cars” of an adolescent brain. A sports car brain with “a brand-new and very powerful motor, with many more connections than an adult brain, but with brakes that only work with half, or less, power.”

It might be worth a look if you are interested in this. As we move through our wellbeing Year assemblies this week, self-regulating screen time is one of the topics that has been discussed.

7M CELEBRATING CULTURE!
This week, 7M has begun their new topic for Term 2: ‘celebrating culture’. The boys will be looking at different cultures around the world as well as learning more about their own individual culture. To open our first English lesson the boys participated in a yarn circle, a contemporary approach to a traditional
Aboriginal activity where people would sit in a circle and share stories. In modern day society, yarn circles are used to tackle social issues and share cultural history in a respectful setting. 7M was able to share their culture with the each other and draw a connection to other people’s cultures in the room through the yarn circle, learning that all their cultures are unique but also connected through our multicultural society.
2019 HSC MUSIC STUDY DAY
On Thursday our HSC Music class ventured out to Fairfield High School to participate in the HSC Music Study Day. Our students participated in performance, musicology and aural skills workshops. The highlight of the study day was a 2-hour performance session by HSC candidates from across Sydney, which was critiqued by a panel of experienced HSC markers. It was an enjoyable concert and gave us Invaluable insights into the performance standards of current HSC students.

PLAIN ENGLISH SPEAKING COMPETITION
On Monday, Jordan Ddibya (Year 11) and Wesley Stewart (Year 10) participated in the Plain English Speaking Competition against schools such as Meriden Girls, Fort St High School, MLC and Macquarie Grammar School. The boys had to deliver an 8-minute speech on a topic of their choice, and prepare an impromptu speech on the topic of “hindsight”. I am extremely proud of both boys for their effort and their courage. Congratulations to Jordan for placing fourth in the competition!

SYDNEY WRITER’S FESTIVAL
Last Wednesday 9 Rose attended the Sydney Writer’s Festival Secondary Schools Day at Carriage works. Published writers shared their inspiration, their techniques, and, ideas about what is involved in writing a story. It was an extremely informative day that provided students with essential knowledge and understanding for their own creative process. With the new HSC English Syllabus focusing more on creative writing, it is paramount that our students develop their own creative writing skills. This day was a wonderful experience that encouraged the students and provided them with an opportunity to learn in a different environment. The students were so inspired to read after hearing from the various authors we had to line up and buy HEAPS of
books from the booksellers!! Ms Whitting
“Will Kostakis was extremely brave and had enormous courage to discuss his life with the audience. He promoted being honest and was extremely amusing. He encouraged us, that even in darkest of times to keep going forward. His first book only sold four copies, but he did not give up on his dream to write and share his life and experiences with teenage readers. He kept going, and now inspires others with his writing success but more importantly his truth and example.” Brian “There were a variety of fascinating authors who presented their life story and shone a light on how they created their novels. They shared the thought processes they went
through to create a story that engages and connects with readers. The day represented how a variety of people can evolve from their mistakes and experiences. I found all the speakers to be extremely influential and have encouraged me to surpass whatever obstacles I face.” John “I found Neal Shusterman’s speech to be the most interesting. It was really inspiring to hear from the YA author who writes for the post apocalyptic genre. I thought that his creative personality is absolutely reflected in his novels. From his talk I learnt that it is important to read a large variety of books, not focusing on specific genre, this he said has allowed him to become a better writer.” Luca

DIVERSITY - IT IS US!
Year 7 students have been working on the unit of work which emphasizes embracing diversity and challenging discrimination in order to enhance the health and wellbeing of all individuals. This was the 7T class way of saying ‘NO’ to discrimination.
