Pro-ActionHertfordshireisamembershiporganisation.Ourjobistosupport,representandchampionthemanyorganisationsandindividualsacrossHertfordshirewhoworkwithchildrenandyoungpeople.

Therearefourmainstrandstoourwork:

• Directsupport,adviceandconsultancytoourmemberorganisations.Thiscurrentlyaccountsforabout80%ofwhatwedo.

• Providingtraining,promotinggoodpracticeandencouragingtheuseofqualitystandardsacrossthechildren’s’andyouthsectorsinHertfordshire.

• Engagingwithandcontributingtostrategyandpolicydevelopmentswhichaffectourmembersorchildrenandyoungpeople,especiallywithinthecountybutalsonationally.Weaimtobetheeyes,earsandvoiceofthechildrenandyoungpeople'ssectorsinHertfordshire.

• Providingaccreditedleadership,teamworkandgroupworkcoursesforyoungpeopleaged13to19.

YouthMentalHealthFirstAid(MHFA)isthehelpgiventoayoungpersonexperiencingamentalhealthproblembeforeprofessionalhelpisobtained.TheaimsofYouthMHFAareto:

• Preservelifewhereayoungpersonmaybeadangertothemselvesorothers.

• Providehelptopreventtheemotionalandmentalhealthproblemdevelopingintoamoreseriousstate.

• Promotetherecoveryofgoodmentalhealth.• Providecomforttoayoungpersonexperiencingamentalhealth

problem.• Raiseawarenessofmentalhealthissuesinthecommunity• Reducestigmaanddiscrimination.

YouthMHFAdoesnotteachpeopletobetherapists.However,itdoesteachpeopleto:

• Recognisethesymptomsofmentalhealthproblems.• Provideinitialhelp.• Enableayoungpersontoaccessappropriateprofessionalhelp.

TheYouthMHFAcourseissplitupinto4manageablechunks.Theseare:

– Whatismentalhealth? -Depressionandanxiety– Suicideandpsychosis -Selfharmandeatingdisorders

Youwillalsocoverothertopicsspecifictoyoungpeoplethatincludechildandadolescentdevelopment,bullying/cyberbullying,substancemisuseandpromotingprotectivefactorsandgoodparenting.Ineachsectionyou'lllearnhowto:

• Spottheearlysignsofamentalhealthprobleminyoungpeople• Feelconfidenthelpingayoungpersonexperiencingaproblem• Providehelponafirstaidbasis• Helpprotectayoungpersonwhomightbeatriskofharm• Helppreventamentalhealthillnessfromgettingworse• Helpayoungpersonrecoverfaster• Guideayoungpersontowardstherightsupport• Reducethestigmaofmentalhealthproblems

Howwework?• TheYouthMHFAcoursetakesplaceover2fulldays.• Thesessionswillbeamixofpresentation,groupdiscussionsand

groupworkactivities.Ourtrainersprovideaverysafelearningenvironmentandaretrainedtosupportyouthroughoutthewholecourse.Ifyoudon'tfeelcomfortablejoiningincertainbits,thendon't,wewon'tmakeyoudosomethingyouaren'tcomfortablewith.

• Duetosomeofthesensitivesubjectsofourcourses,includingsuicide,welimitnumbersto16people.Wewanteveryonetofeelsafeandourinstructorscanhelpifpeoplefindsomebitsparticularlydifficult.

• You'llreceiveaYouthMHFAmanualthatyoucantakeawaywithyouattheendofthecourseandalsoanattendancecertificatefromMHFAEnglandtosayyouarenowYouthMentalHealthFirstAider.
