The Bolashak funded professional
development internships at the University of
Cambridge Faculty of Education will cover key
areas of theory, practice and innovations in
the field of teacher development, such as
pedagogy, curriculum, educational
assessment and pedagogical leadership.
Who should apply?
The programme’s common core will be on pedagogy and
curriculum in schools which cater for children across the 7 – 18
years age range. Two option routes then exist:
Route 1 (teacher education) aims to recruit academics working
in Universities and pedagogic institutions in pre-service teacher
training and education, together with methodologists from
schools in Kazakhstan.
Route 2 (school leadership) aims to recruit Principals and
Teachers in schools or educational organisations in Kazakhstan,
who have a professional interest and engagement in leadership,
subject teaching and learning.
Participants are required to have a minimum English Language
level of IELTS 6.0 or equivalent and three years of work
experience. We expect participants to be endorsed by their
employer to undertake this professional development intership
and to qualify for JSC Centre for International Programs funding
(Bolashak International Scholarships).
What is the purpose of the programme?
Route 1 (teacher education) will enable participants to
understand a schools-university and school-based model of
teacher education, as well as examine the pedagogies of
teacher education, the skills of developing of new teachers and
the complementary roles of mentors and university staff.
Route 2 (school leadership) will enable participants to engage
with issues of leadership, learning and professional development
in the broadest sense and at every level, from international
policy to local schools, and to explore national and global
networks and mutually productive partnerships with leading
scholarly and professional communities.
What is the structure of the programme?
Participants on both routes of the programme will study at the
Faculty of Education, as well as shadow, observe and visit
schools and educational institutions.
The 9 month programme will consist of a mixture of placements
in local Cambridge partnership schools, mentoring by
experienced school leaders and teachers, inputs from teacher
education experts and supplementary English language training.
What are the methods of study?
On both routes, work will be assessed through a variety of
methods including portfolios of directed tasks, presentations, a
professional dialogue, written assignments, including elements
that require synthesis, analysis, critique and reflection. The
assessment will include a range of modes of presentation of
ideas and reflections upon practice and theory. This includes:
a seminar presentation; a comparative analysis (3,000 words) of
pre-service teacher education in Kazakhstan and the U.K. (route
1) and teacher leadership in Kazakhstan and the U.K. (route 2);
a small-scale research report (2,000 words); the development of
a 5000 word portfolio of experiences throughout the year.

What will the outcomes be?
By the end of the internship, the Route 1 (teacher education)
participant will be enabled to:
● understand current international and national thinking on
teacher education and its importance;
● reflect upon how a school-university partnership around
teacher education works;
● plan a curriculum for the development of new teachers to
include current pedagogical knowledge as well as
pedagogical subject knowledge;
● design an appropriate programme of partnership working;
● compare and contrast different models of teacher
education showing an awareness of their strengths and
weaknesses;
● frame standards and outcomes for a programme of
teacher education;
● reflect on a range of different assessment techniques and
how these are best suited to giving supportive feedback
to teacher trainees.
By the end of the internship, the Route 2 (school leadership)
participant will be enabled to:
● increase their reflective, critical, professional and
managerial skills, and their own leadership capacity;
● reflect upon the factors which contribute towards the
successful development of professional community
network at different scales;
● develop a strategic plan for the development of the
school within a national and international context;
● understand a wide range of international approaches to
the practical aspects of leading and managing;
● work through distributed leadership models which foster
trust, reciprocity and collaborative learning;
● use creative approaches to the profession, backed up by
experience and the ongoing accumulation of knowledge
through reflective practice;
● initiate and sustain innovation in schools on an ongoing
basis.

Common to each programme, participants will therefore have:
● an improved capacity to locate, synthesise and evaluate
current research in education;
● visited examples of a wide range of educational
institutions with different strengths and different
philosophies of education;
● have an understanding of a wide range of models and
practices for teacher education, school and subject
leadership, and professional development, showing an
awareness of their strengths and weaknesses
● enhanced communication skills in speaking and writing
and using English.

Submit an expression of interest and your CV to the Faculty of
Education by email to [email protected] as soon as
possible, but no later than 30th May 2016.
If offered a place, you will be asked to submit an application for
funding to the JSC Centre for International Programs. If
successful, the Bolashak International Scholarships will cover
the course fees, living costs and flights to UK. The deadline for
