PSY 230 Online
This section of PSY 230 is an online class. We will not meet in a classroom at any time.
All work will be completed on Canvas, UNC’s online learning management system.
Course Objectives
This course provides an introduction to human development from before birth through
late adulthood. We will cover scientific research in developmental psychology, focusing
on physical, cognitive, emotional, and social development in infancy, early and middle
childhood, adolescence, early and middle adulthood, and late adulthood.
Communication between Students and Instructor
Students are encouraged to stay in contact with the instructor to ensure that all questions
are answered and all assignments are clearly understood. The following procedures are
recommended for communicating with the instructor:
Send e-mail to the instructor to ask questions about course requirements, grades,
deadlines, etc. When sending e-mail, always include “PSY 230” in the subject
line of the message. On weekdays, the instructor will respond to e-mail within 24
hours (response time may be longer on weekends).
Contact Macmillan tech support, not the instructor, to report technical problems
with Launchpad. Send email to the instructor if you need deadline extensions or
extra time on assignments, or if you notice inaccuracies in the grade book on
Canvas.
The instructor will often send e-mail to students at their BearMail accounts. Make
sure to check your UNC/BearMail account regularly.
The instructor will not be available by phone during the summer session.
Grading
This course is letter graded. Your grade is determined from the number of points you earn

Textbook
The textbook for this class is Invitation to the lifespan (2nd edition), by Kathleen Berger.
The book comes in a paper version and an online e-book version. THE E-BOOK IS
REQUIRED. A paper copy of the book is optional. The e-book is part of a set of online
resources called Launchpad. To purchase the e-book, log onto Canvas, click on
“Launchpad Registration Instructions” on the PSY 230 homepage, and follow the
instructions to buy access to Launchpad. Make sure to go through Canvas when you
register on Launchpad. After you have registered on Launchpad, you can access the e-
book through Canvas by clicking on the “E-Book Home” link on the PSY 230 Canvas
Home page for in any of the chapter modules.
Assignments and Quizzes
All work for PSY 230 is completed through Canvas. All assigned work can be found by
clicking on “Modules” in the course menu on Canvas. There is a module for each
textbook chapter. Each module includes Learning Curve activities, a chapter quiz, and
discussion questions for each chapter.
Learning Curve
Learning Curve activities are chapter reviews, presented in the form of practice tests.
These activities are excellent for test preparation. They are required in PSY 230 because
they are very effective at facilitating student learning. Most chapters include three
learning curve activities. However, some chapters have more than three and one chapter
has only two. There are 45 assigned Learning Curve activities.
In each Learning Curve activity, you are tested on all of the key concepts in a section of a
chapter. When you have correctly answered questions on all key concepts, you have
completed the activity.
Learning Curve activities have no time limit. In addition, you can stop a Learning Curve
activity and resume later. You will receive 3 points for a completed Learning Curve
activity and 0 points for activities that are not completed. No scores other than 3 and 0
will be given for Learning Curve activities.
Deadlines for the Learning Curve activities are listed in the Summary of Deadlines on the
last page of the syllabus. The Learning Curve activities for Chapters 2-12 have 6-day
grace periods. These activities may be completed with no penalty (i.e., no points
deducted from your score) up to 11:59 PM, 6 days after their deadlines. After the grace
period ends, students will receive scores of 0 on all incomplete activities. There is no
grace period for the Chapter 13-15 Learning Curve activities. They are due on the last
day of the term.
Chapter Quizzes
There are 14 chapter quizzes, worth 30 points each. Each chapter quiz covers one
chapter. The quizzes cover Chapters 2-15. There is no quiz on Chapter 1.
Each chapter quiz consists of 15 multiple-choice questions, worth 2 points each, and has
a time limit of 15 minutes. Once you start a quiz, you must finish it within 15 minutes in
3
one sitting. If you exceed the 15-minute time limit, the quiz will close down, you will not
be able to continue, and this will count as one attempt. You cannot start a quiz, stop, and
then go back to finish it later. Do not start a quiz until you have studied the material and
are ready to complete the quiz in one sitting.
Two attempts are allowed on each quiz. You will not receive the same questions on the
second attempt that you saw on the first attempt. Only your last attempt will count toward
your grade. If you make two attempts, your score on the second attempt is used to
compute grades, even if it is lower than your score on the first attempt. So, make a second
attempt only if you are confident that you can improve your score or if you reached the
time limit before finishing your first attempt.
A deadline for each quiz is given in the Summary of Deadlines on the last page of the
syllabus. Chapter Quizzes 2-12 have a 6-day grace period. These quizzes may be
completed with no penalty (i.e., no points deducted from your score) up to 11:59 PM, 6
days after their deadlines. After the grace period ends, students will receive scores of 0 on
all incomplete quizzes. There is no grace period for Quizzes 13-15. These quizzes are due
on the last day of the term.
Preparing for quizzes
To prepare for each quiz, read the textbook chapter and complete all of the Learning
Curve activities for that chapter. The chapter review is also recommended, but not
required.
Quizzes are “open book”
You may use your book and notes during quizzes. However, don’t expect to have time to
look up answers during a quiz. Before starting a quiz, you should study the material as
thoroughly as you would for a closed-book test in a classroom.
Syllabus Quiz
The first quiz for PSY 230 covers the syllabus. A score of 10 points (100% correct) is
required on the Syllabus Quiz. Scores of less than 10 points will be converted to zero in
the grade book. The Syllabus Quiz has no time limit, and you may take it as often as
necessary up to its deadline, to achieve a score of 10 points. The syllabus quiz will not be
available after the deadline listed in the Summary of Deadlines on the last page of the
syllabus; there is no grace period for this quiz.
Discussions
Discussion questions are found in the Chapter modules on Canvas. The purpose of the
discussions is to encourage active and critical thinking about research, theories, and
overall themes in developmental psychology. Each student is required to make at least
two discussion posts during Week 1 and at least four posts per week during Weeks 2-6.
In Week 1, you will receive 5 points for making two posts. In Weeks 2-6, you will
receive 10 points for each week in which you make the four required posts (you may
make more than 4 posts; 4 is just the minimum). You will receive zero points for weeks
in which you make fewer than the minimum number of posts.
4
There is no grace period for discussion-board posts. All required posts for each week
must be posted by 11:59 PM on Friday of that week.
In all communications related to this class, including discussion board posts, students are
expected to be professional in the tone and content of their communications, tolerant of
diverse ideas, and respectful toward the instructor and other students.
Disability Support Services
Students who believe that they may need accommodations in this class are encouraged to
contact the Disability Support Services, voice/TTY (970) 351-2289, or fax (970) 351-
4166, or visit www.unco.edu/dss as soon as possible to ensure that accommodations are
implemented in a timely fashion.
Inclusivity Statement
The College of Education and Behavioral Sciences (CEBS) supports an inclusive
learning environment where diversity and individual differences are understood,
respected, appreciated, and recognized as a source of strength. We expect that students,
faculty, administrators and staff within CEBS will respect differences and demonstrate
diligence in understanding how other peoples’ perspectives, behaviors, and worldviews
may be different from their own.
Academic Integrity Policy
The University of Northern Colorado’s Student Code of Conduct
http://www.unco.edu/dos/Conduct/codeofconduct.html and Honor Code
http://www.unco.edu/dos/Conduct/academicIntegrity.html strictly prohibit any form of
academic misconduct. Academic misconduct includes but is not limited to plagiarism,
cheating, fabrication, and knowingly or recklessly encouraging or making possible any
act of plagiarism, cheating, or fabrication. Academic misconduct is an unacceptable
activity in scholarship and is in conflict with academic and professional ethics and
morals. All incidents of alleged plagiarism or other forms of academic dishonesty will be
investigated and violations of academic integrity will result in a consequence that may be
as severe as an F in the class and a recommendation for expulsion. For more information
on plagiarism and appropriate paraphrasing, please see:
