Weather has no Frontiers
11.000 Landstations measure pressure, wind, temperature and humidity, thereof 176 in Deutschland.
900 Weatherballons 2x daily worldwide, to get a upper air profil of temperature, humidity and wind speed.
2.800 Ships do weather observations in regions
of the southern hemisphere and the oceans.
17.05.12WV12 Bähnke 14
Weather has no Frontiers
750 floating buoys and about 3.000 comercial airliners measure special weather data day by day
What is still missing?
weather satellites and radar!
What is still missing?
weather satellites and radar!
17.05.12WV12 Bähnke 15
• Satellites measure temperature of surface and in the atmosphere.
• Geostationary satellites, i.e. „METEOSAT“,circle in 35.800 km altitude.
• Looking from the earth, they stand still in the sky.
• Polar orbiting satellites circle in 800-900 km altitude over the poles.
• DWD‘s radar network of 17 radars detects even very small storm clouds.

All data get togetherWeather will be calculated in 40 vertical layers:
By a global model (GME) in triangles, side length 40 km, worldwide 368.642 grid points
By a lokal model (COSMO-EU)
in recktangles, side length 7 km, for
Europe 436.905 grid points

Weather models are reliable, but 100 %-forecast not possible! Weather models are reliable, but 100 %-forecast not possible!
