On the evening of Thursday, December
1st, Colegrove Park Elementary enjoyed
our first Winter Dessert Fest!! Staff and
Students with their families were invited
to come and enjoy a holiday concert
in our gymnasium, performed by
Mrs. Lazzari’s chorus students accom-
panied by Ms. Fillio’s band students.
The students all did a tremendous job!
Then a sing-a-long of holiday favorites
was enjoyed by all. Delicious desserts
brought by our wonderful families, hot
cocoa and fun seasonal crafts supplied
by our PTG were enjoyed down in our
cafeteria! The PTG also had our
Scholastic Book Fair open for the convenience of our families to be able to purchase fun
items and books for the gift giving season. It was a fun-filled Family night! Please come
to our next family event planned for Friday, January 20th! As long as “Mother Nature”
goes along with our plan, we will have a Family Dinner and a “Finding Dory” Movie Night!
More information to be sent home soon. We hope to see you there!

Principal Notes:
Dear Families & Students,
I hope the last few days of 2016 provide you with a rest-
ful Winter Break. It is with excitement that we mark
our first anniversary of moving into Colegrove Park Ele-
mentary in January of 2015! Our message as we return
to school for students and staff alike is: “BE YOUR BEST,
and DO YOUR BEST!” As we begin the new year in 2017,
faculty will focus on “returning to our learning” by re-
viewing our routines and expectations in the classroom,
as well as in our hallways, cafeteria and playground.
We hope to instill in our children the importance of
safety, kindness, respect and responsibility. We encour-
age more student independence as the year progresses
for students in all grade levels - please reinforce the
message of our children being their best. Some helpful
conversation starters might be: “What does doing your
best in your classroom look like?” “Tell me how you were
responsible today at school?” Or, “How can you be safe
on the playground?”
On behalf of Colegrove Park Elementary, have a Happy
New Year and please do not hesitate to reach out to us
if we can be of support and assistance to you and your
child.

By Mrs. Bator
The fourth graders, here at Colegrove Park Elementary will be doing a service learning project through the holidays (and hopefully throughout the year).
We will be collecting items for an organization called Boxes of Love. This organization is run by Patricia Erdeski of Stamford, VT. What the organization does is mail care packages overseas to our military members. Mrs. Erdeski relies on donations so she may continue to send out the boxes.
On November 10th, the day before Veterans Day, Mrs. Mrs. Erdeski came in to speak to the students about why she does this, and also told us that it was Boxes of Love’s 4th anniversary THAT day!!!! To date, she has mailed out over 655 boxes!!!!
We, as a fourth grade, are very excited to be doing our part in honoring our veterans this Veterans Day.
We collected 4 boxes of items and raised $68.00 of dona-tions. She picked up our boxes on Friday, December 9th. It was a big success and we will talk about extending our project after the holiday break.

Picasso Cubism by our 7th Graders
Using Warm and Cool Colors The class discussed Picasso’s cubism artwork and looked
specifically at a painting called “Three Musicians”. They
were to draw three images that were related, trace and cut out the images and re-
trace the new image that has gaps in it, making a cubist effect. Artwork was fully
colored, using warm and cool oil pastels. All of these artworks are displayed
down the gymnasium hall. These were done using the art standards.
Native American Symbols: Grade 2 Students have been learning a little bit of Native American history beginning with
the Piasa bird project last month. This project begins with sketching Native Ameri-
can images from worksheets. The images are then copied onto a brown sheet of
kraft paper and colored in with oil pastels. Students learn how Native Americans
lived many years ago and some of the actual images they created to tell stories.
The finished images are bright and colorful.
Stained Glass By the 4th Graders The class discussed where we’ve seen stain glass before. Churches and windows in buildings were men-
tioned and Ms. Jock showed them some samples. The first thing the students did was to create a sketch on a
small piece of paper. The sketch was to resemble stained
glass. The image then got traced onto a special black
stain glass paper. The black paper gets scratched off with
a small wooden dowel around the images leaving a rain-
bow color in sections of the black paper. You can see
through the paper and a stained glass image appears with
rainbow colors inside a black outline. A source of light
behind these imag-
es makes them
even more impres-
sive so light can
shine through the
rainbow color.

Mrs. Grogan’s second grade class invited their
two MCLA Teach 2 Learn science fellows, Miss
Broyles and Mr. Costa, to come to their class for a
final farewell. The students wrote and illustrated
good-bye and thank you cards, which the fellows
read aloud to the class. The science fellows gave
each student a farewell note and candy. Miss
Broyles and Mr. Costa will be greatly missed!
Bubble Gum Machines by Our 1st Grade The classes discussed what gumball machines look like and the
different shapes or designs we might use when drawing a gumball
machine. The students started the project using large paper and con-
struction paper crayons to draw the gumball machine, create the de-
signs on the machine and also decide on a price for our gumballs.
During the second class, we used color change markers creating
amazing special effects to color in our gumballs and the designs on
the machines.
On November 15th the third grade students at Colegrove Park Elementary got a taste of college
life by visiting the MCLA campus. Visiting MCLA allowed students to discover their future.
Throughout the morning the students in Miss Parrino's and Mrs. Atwood's class did some cod-
ing in Murdock Hall's computer lab, participated in athletic strengthening in the Athletic Center,
and observed some college classes in session in Bowman Hall. It was evident from all the ques-
tions our students asked their tour guide that college was definitely in their future.

The fifth and sixth grade recently visited Mass MoCA. On Friday, Nov. 4th, 6th grade went. On
Friday, Dec. 9th, the 5th Grade went. “Here Comes The Sun” was the theme. “When is a paint
brush not a paint brush?”, is the question they asked. The artist, Federico Uribe used different
materials, you would not think of, to make assorted animals and a person out of. ie: A sheep with
kid scissors for wool. A dog with colored pencils for fur. A lion with bullet shells for a mane in
Kid Space. The main gallery expanded on this idea to make you think. Then all enjoyed time
making their own piece of art. Our students really enjoy their time at Mass MoCA’s Kidspace,
as you can see from the two pages of photos.

Blockly. This year students were ready for a new challenge! For Hour of Code week this year,
we challenged ourselves to use Scratch by MIT. The students were up for the challenge!
They are doing impressive work!

On December 7th the Colegrove Park Elementary School students and staff filled 7 busses
and took a bus ride to Williamstown to see a performance of the
“Nutcracker” performed by the Albany Ballet. The audience
was given a brief preview of what was going to happen before
each scene took place. They saw a variety of different dances
that Clara saw in the Sugar Plum Forest. The students enjoyed
the performance and some students commented they would like
to see the whole “Nutcracker” performance some time. The stu-
dents enjoyed the trip. After the performance the students were
treated to a bag lunch at school.

Each year Ms. Parrino’s Third Graders do a Thanksgiving project. The purpose is to
get experience interacting with others, writing, and getting to know the Colegrove
Park Elementary staff members throughout the building. The children get a better
understanding of our teacher's and staff’s responsibilities, and possibly
learn a little more about them. Every student was assigned a Teacher
or staff member. They had the task of interviewing them to find
some important work facts and some fun personal facts about them,
and who they are. Then they made a paper replica of their assigned
Teacher or staff member. The students did a fantastic job and the
adults were thrilled with their write ups!

7th Grader & Kindergarten Reading Buddies On the afternoon of
December 16th, Ms.
Nelson's and Mr. Elder's
7th grade students read
with kindergarten
students. They read to
the students in small
groups of 2 to 3 7th
graders per student.
Did you know that the solar system from the Sun to Pluto to scale would
take up the entire 3rd floor corridor? Using that scale the Sun would be
the size of a dime and the Earth would be the size of a grain of sand!
Mr. Elder's 6th grade class while learning about the solar system explored
a to scale model of it and just how much space is in between some of the
planets. Here is the solar system and their size equivalents: Sun (dime),
Mercury (head of a needle), Venus (grain of sand), Earth (grain of sand),
Mars (head of a needle), Jupiter (thickness of a quarter), Saturn (large
grain of sand), Uranus (the "T" in In God We Trust stamped on a penny),
Neptune (the "T" in In God We Trust stamped on a penny), and Pluto
(a very small grain of sand).
6th Graders Make A Replica Solar System
Colegrove Park Elementary’s 7th Grader, Emily
Cooper got a surprise visit from officers David
Lemieux, Dave Sherman, Ben Austin and Anthony
Beverly. They made her an honorary captain of
the Running With The Law team.
