Skating sports
The three skating sports disciplines were: figure skating, speed skating, and short track speed
skating.
Figure skating• Figure skating is a sport and activity in which individuals,
duos, or groups perform on figure skates on ice. The four Olympic disciplines are men's singles, ladies' singles, pair
skating, and ice dancing.
Speed skating is a competitive in which the competitors race each other in traveling a certain distance on skates.
Short track speed skating is a form of competitive ice speed skating. In competitions, multiple skaters (typically between four and six)
Skiing sportsThe six skiing sport disciplines were: alpine,
cross-country skiing, freestyle, Nordic combined, ski jumping and snowboarding.
Ski jumping is a sport in which skiers go down a take-off ramp, jump and attempt to land as far as possible down the hill below. In addition to the length of the jump, judges give points for style.
Snowboarding is a winter sport that involves descending a slope that is covered with snow while standing on a board attached to a rider's feet, using a special boot set onto a mounted binding. It became a Winter Olympic Sport in 1998.
Freestyle skiing is a form of skiing which consists of aerial, moguls, skicross, boardercross, Ski half-pipe, Snowboard half-pipe and Slopestyle and have become part of the Olympics.
Bobsleigh or bobsled is a winter sport in which teams of two or four make timed runs down narrow, twisting,
banked, iced tracks in a gravity-powered sled.
Curling is a sport in which players slide stones across a sheet of ice towards a target area which is segmented into four rings. Two teams, each of four players, take
turns sliding heavy, polished granite stones, also called "rocks", across the ice curling sheet towards the
house, a circular target marked on the ice. Each team has eight stones.
• Hockey is a family of sports in which two teams play against each other by trying to maneuver a ball or a puck into the opponent's goal using a hockey stick.
• Ice hockey is played on a large flat area of ice, using rubber disc called a puck. The game is contested between two teams of skaters.
• A Luge is a small one- or two-person sled on which one sleds supine and feet-first. Of the three Olympic sliding sports, which include bobsleigh and skeleton, luge is the fastest and most dangerous.
