FROM THE RABBI
Sandford R. Kopnick
The book Stars of David is a bit depressing. Yet, as we approach Chanukah, it is hard to believe that the experiences of that book are indicative of the Jewish experience in America. Let me explain:
The book attempts to show us the way various famous Jews (that's the Stars part) relate to their Judaism, and whether Judaism has played a part in their success. An overwhelming majority found a Jewish cultural tie to the way they approach the world, but not necessarily a religious tie. This is why I'm depressed.
The Judaism you and I celebrate at Valley has to do with positive traditions and religiosity. The phrase: Zeh ha yom Adonai, nagilah v'nismicha vo--This is the day that God has made, let us be glad and rejoice in it-{from the Psalms) is like a montra around here. We look for the positive celebrations--embrace traditions, make them meaningful and then do them.
So many in the book had something critical to say about boring services, or meaningless ritual. And yet, in our movement, we are working on this-and have been for generations. Another recurring theme was that very large congregations were the last stop some of these Jews made in their religious life. I wish we could have embraced some of these people-with our Valley warmth and sense of community!
This congregation has been built on giving a sense of family to our members. We don't always succeedthat is for sure. However, we are blessed with a warm and welcoming congregation. We work on aspects of Jewish life that have historically been challenging to Jews: B'nai Mitzvah are personalized and relevant, the music at services, sermon topics, and even prayer selection are rarely "same-old, same-old," and we are simply not getting the "I hate Hebrew School" experience from most of our students like was the case when I was a kid.
From where I sit, Judaism's cup is more than half full. Stars of David is so depressing because almost none interviewed were famous, loved their Judaism, and incorporated it into their lives. Rather, they had a few good memories, many bad ones, and thought that their drive,
their values system, their sense of social justice, and their success was due to their Jewish heritage. And yet, few were giving it to their children; many were unaware of specifics that incorporated Judaism into their success; and almost no one had a Reform story to tell.
I would think that you and I are famous enough for each other-we don't need the Stars of David book. I wanted to read the book to be inspired by Jews loving Judaism. Rather than this book, however, I think I'll show up on a Friday Night Live, a Sunday School Morning (almost any), and adult ed program, or a youth group outing. For when I do, I will see a lot of happy Jews, and see many trying to help others find Judaism to be a meaningful and important part of their lives.
Have a great Chanukah!
Sandford R. Kopnick Rabbi

MITZVAH IN THE MIDDLE EAST
At our erev Rosh Hashanah service, we wished Steven Edell, son of Donna and Rich Edell a safe trip as he was being shipped out to Iraq. It was a very emotional send off. and our hearts and thoughts are with him and his family. We have recently heard that he and his hospital (in which he is on the medical staff) could use the following items:
Razors- The cheap disposable type. Shaving Cream- The small travel size Face cloths for cleaning them up.
We will accept these items until December 15 and then send the package. If you would like to communicate with Steve, write:
Sgt. Steven Edell 399th CSH COB Speiche APO AE 09393
Please show Steven and his unit our support by bringing these items to the Temple. Cards and letters of support are also appreciated and can be sent directly to him.
CONFIRMATION CLASS FROM DETROIT VISITING
ON DECEMBER 2
Temple Israel of West Bloomfield, Michigan will participate in an educational program on Saturday Morning December 2 and will be hosted by The Valley Temple High Schools students.
The Temple has hosted Temple Israel for the last several years and we look forward to welcoming them again this year.
The group is accompanied by Rabbi Joshua Bennett and is from Rabbi Kopnick's childhood congregation.
PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE ... It seems like Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur were
just last week. My how time flies!
As we head into the winter months, Valley Temple continues to offer a great mix of activities, services and opportunities for participating in our Jewish community.
• Our Friday night Shabbat services are very special - when you come to these, be prepared for an experience that will definitely put you in a different frame of mind than what you've had during the rest of your week. Sometimes that means calmer and soothiIig, sometimes that means energetic and energizing!
• VaIIey ' s efforts to help the community are ongoing. The Over-the-Rhine Soup Kitchen continues to help a great number of people - I'm still amazed at how many people in Cincinnati depend on this service for simple nourishment. (I think we've still got a long way to go in many aspects of our community's social health.)
• Our adult education program "Jewish Perspectives on the 2006 Congressional Elections" was very interesting and timely.
• The Endowment continues to grow - we are currently at pledges of approximately $750,000! You wiII be receiving information in the near future on how you can participate if you haven't done so already. This campaign protects Valley so that it will be here for many more years to come.
• And we can look forward to our fun 50 tb
anniversary celebration. I think it's great that Valley's growth is strong at this time when we will celebrate our evolution from an organization with a focus on Jewish education, to a "full service" congregation. Mark your calendars for the weekend of May 18-20. Plan to be in on it all
o May 18: Shabbat services, o May 19: Gala Celebration o May 20: Event with Valley's Children.
I could go on and on ... please read the bulletin from front to back to learn about our fuII calendar of opportunities. There are many ways to get involved and stay in touch.
Take care ... and stay warm!

About Chql7ukqh ... Chanukah is an eight day festival that we don't find mentioned in our Bible. The word Chanukah means re-dedication and commemeorates the victory of Judah the Maccabee and his followers over the forces of the Syrian king, Antiochus IV. When Judah and his brothers recaptured the ancient Temple in Jerusalem in 1 65 B.C.E., their eight-day rededication ceremony was the first Chanukah. The story is told in the First and Second Books of the Maccabees, which form part of the Apocrypha--sacred literature of Judaism that is post-Biblical. The Temple had been Hellenized--transformed from uniquely Jewish practices to heavy Greek influence. The Maccabees cleaned house, rededicated the Temple and brought back the Jewish customs. It is this we celebrate at Chanukah.
There is a legend that in rededicating the Temple, a cruz of oil could only be found to last for one night--but it miraculously lasted for eight nights, and that is why Chanukah is celebrated for eight nights. While most love this story, other theories of why we celebrate for eight nights surround the festival of Sukkot, which was thought to be the festival used (albeit late) for the rededication of the Temple service.
light is a symbol of most holidays that are found in the middle of winter. light is a"ssociated with God's presence, and the lights of the festival help us bring God's presence into this ceremony. Gift giving is a borrowed custom, not originally associated with the holiday. In fact, in the state of Israel, this holiday is minor and subtle.
I have a little Dreidel ... Dreidel is a wonderful game of chance that uses a four-sided top with four Hebrew letters. Each person "anties" a piece of chocolate gelt (coin) or peanuts. Upon spinning the Dreidel, the player must respond to the letter upon which the Dreidel lands.

RELIGIOUS SCHOOL CORNER
Wasn't it only a few minutes ago that we were eating apples and honey and decorating the Sukkah? Now our secular year is winding down, and we're all busy getting ready to celebrate Chanukah (and consecration!). We've had a wonderful start to our year in Religious School; here are some highlights, as well as some events in December and January to mark: on your calendars!
By the time you read this, all of our Pre School- Sixth Grade classes will have had one Family Education program, in addition to our October All School Sukkot Fair. I want to thank all our parents for making this commitment to learn with your children. We have virtually 100% attendance at these sessions, which is something you should be very proud of. We know that reinforcement at home is crucial in the process of turning Jewish children into committed Jewish adults. Your dedication to spending several Sunday mornings with your children shows them how much Judaism means to you.
Our initial grade Shabbat family dinner for the seventh and eighth grades was a big success. It was a wonderful way to welcome Shabbat together! The fifth and sixth grade Shabbat family dinner will be on Friday December 8"', and the second and third grade Shabbat family dinner will be on Friday, January 12, 2007. We try to schedule these dinners for the second Friday of the month, which is when family services take place. See you then!
Consecration for our kindergarten students will again be held during our Chanukah Temple celebration, which takes place on Friday December 15"'. It will be a wonderful mix of our oldest and youngest students as the service that evening will be led by our youth group. Plan on coming for dinner and services!
More than once I have mentioned that the V'ahavta is a prayer that inspires me. All of our Religious School programming so far this year (and into next year) fits in so beautifully with the phrase "and you shall teach them diligently unto your children." That is what all of us strive for each day as you entrust us with your children. Thank you for your assistance and support.
Happy Chanukah and Happy secular New Year!
