Rainhill Gala 2014
26th May 2014 -11:30am St Ann’s School Field, View Road
Hi and thanks for picking up the 2014 edition of the Rainhill Gala programme. Wow, what a bumper 12 months its been since last year’s Gala.
First of all I want to express my sincere thanks to everyone who has supported the Gala throughout the past 12 months, the generosity of the Rainhill people has been astounding and its fair to say that we could not do what we do without the support of so many.
In December last year we took part in the national shop local initiative ‘Shop Local Saturday’ where local people throughout the country were encouraged to make use of their local shops. As part of the initiative we supplied our local retailers with our Rainhill Gala sustainable shoppers for them to give away with a qualifying purchase. In all over 500 bags were handed out during the day.
April was a very busy month for us starting with our fifth annual barn dance held again in the Village Hall. A complete sell out, over 120 people came out dressed to impress and enjoyed music from Two Left Feet as well as a hot pot supper.
A week later (not fully recovered from the Barn Dance) came our one off Easter Trail at Loyola Hall. I am really proud of the achievement of the committee for pulling this off and many thanks go to Ann and Julie
in the Barbers for carrying through the vision and convincing the rest of us that it could actually work. It turned out to be one of the best events we could have ever imagined. Magical characters, stories, challenges and lots of sweets and chocolate for the 500 children who attended the event on Easter Monday. You’ll find pictures in this pro-gramme but there are hundreds to be found
online, go to facebook.com/rainhillgala.
Once again the committee of volunteers have surpassed themselves and show their continued commitment to the Charity. If you want to help in any way please get in touch!
This programme features lots of local businesses and helps us raise funds to support the event. Please keep this for the
next time you need a trade or service and mention that you saw their ad in here.

It is with sadness that we learned of the passing of Cllr Dot Kelly in October last year. Dot was a great supporter of the Gala and will be sadly missed by many in Rainhill as a Parish Councillor and as a friend. Our thoughts stay with John, Chris, Nicola and family.

Jamm Studios – Rainhill Gala
Our involvement with Rainhill Gala began in 2012 prior to our business opening, and was an important element in our initial success. The Gala allowed us to promote our business directly to people in the local community on a face to face basis, which is more influential than paper advertising as we were able to gather a large potential customer list, once our business opened a large portion became regular customers.
In our second time of attending the event we were given the opportunity to showcase some of our talented students on the stage as part of the days entertainment. This was not only a great opportunity for the students but also invaluable promotion for our business.
Not only is this event great for our business but each year the event is great fun! We wouldn’t miss it, and would encourage all local businesses to get involved with this event and to get our and meet people in the local area. We now support all Rainhill Gala events and they are all an important part of our promotion for the year.
2014 programme competition
As with previous years we have adopted a theme to the Gala and being that 2014
sees the football World Cup in Brazil, we tasked the Rainhill Scout and Guiding
associations to create a poster for the front cover of our programme. We were
delighted with all of the entries and as usual the Gala committee had a really hard
time choosing a winner from all of the fantastic and colourful entries.
We were looking for something bright,
energetic and that captured the World
Cup theme and after a great deal of
deliberation we decided that the
winner this year was 9 year old Mark
Knowles from 4th Rainhill Cubs. Mark,
pictured left, has drawn a footballer
with a kit made up from different
flags across the world. This also helped
us decide on how we are going to run this year’s
Treasure Hunt (see page 44). Well done Mark, your
design was great and will be enlarged to feature in the
village prior to Gala day. Mark wins a bag of Gala
goodies and a wristband for the fair at the Gala.
Of course as the entries were so close we chose two runners up who were Grace
Robertson (aged 8) from 5th Rainhill Brownies and Niamh Hoy (aged 9) also from
5th Rainhill Brownies. Niamh’s entry (shown lower left) is a beautiful picture that
encompasses the world cup theme together with spectators whilst Grace’s drawing
shows a football scene with goal
and player and a world cup. Both
of these entries came really close
to winning. Well done to everyone
who took part in the competition,
our judges had a really hard time
judging the entries. We would also
like to thank all of the leaders and
staff who took the time to make
time for the children to complete
the posters. 15

A record number of customers attended our 11th Beer Festival last November. Significantly improved tented accommodation in which 100 beers and a wide choice of lager and cider were available, ensured a brilliant, social success. At our ‘Dragons’ Den’ evening last month, a large number of local charities were recipients of a significant proportion of profits from the event.
The sale of alcohol at the Festival does not in itself generate profit over associated costs. The event relies heavily on the generosity of our sponsors. They are individually invited to contribute £100. For this donation the sponsor receives 4 free-entry tickets, advertising both on our Festival website and also in the professionally produced programme, with name and company against a particular beer. Many of our sponsors have been with us for all eleven years. They continue to be most generous and we thank them sincerely. For 2014 we are keen to discuss with any interested party, a role as major sponsor for what we know will be an even bigger and better event than in previous years.
Anyone who might be interested in joining Rainhill Rotary Club with its 48 members or supporting our Beer Festival in any way,

The 2013 Rainhill Gala Awards
Held in September at the Recreation Club, the 2013 awards were as special as they ever have been. As many Gala Goers will remember the weather was against us last year and sadly this was reflected in the total raised in 2013. However we still managed to give away some Gala cash which we know was appreciated and put to good use.
In 2013 we raised a total of £4,400, with the largest donation going to Willowbrook Hospice to help them continue the valuable work they do day in day out, the remaining cash was awarded to good causes in and around the Rainhill area. The awards in 2013 were:
Willowbrook Hospice - £1,650 - Willowbrook help people suffering from a range of illnesses and support their families and caraers, visit their website, www.willowbrook.org.uk
Portico Vine ARLFC - £250 - This non-profit Charity run rugby league club group applied for funding to help achieve an energy efficient lighting system at their facility in Portico.
Eccleston Old Peoples Welfare Committee - £250 - The committee runs a centre on Lester Drive which supports the local community from the ages of 9 months to 92 years.
Rainhill Senior Citizens Luncheon Club - £250 - This group meets weekly in the village hall and is sometimes the only opportunity some of Rainhill’s residents have to socialise.
St Helens Handicapped Persons Society - £200 - The group formerly known as the Friends of St Bartholomew's youth club applied for funding to help with their Christmas Party which costs £800 in order to give 30 people a time of the year to remember.
Under Construction Crew - £250 - Appearing at the Gala in 2013 the UC Crew provides an outlet for young people in the St Helens area. Wishing to expand their classes, UC Crew want to use the funding to help increase their membership base.
Rainhill Remembered - £250 - The application made in association with Rainhill Civic Society was to support their World War I event in 2014.
Rainhill United Football Club - £400 - The funding applied for has been used to buy a defibrillator which will be available during Rainhill United’s matches.
The Caterpillar Club - £200 - Meeting in the 4F centre on Old Lane, this group supports many families of disabled children across St Helens
4th St Helens Rainhill St Ann’s Scout Group - £250 - The building on Old Lane is now 30 years old and they have been fundraising to help update the building and grounds. This donation will be used towards the cost of upgrading the fencing around the building.
St Helens Homewatch - £200 - Another initiative promoting safety in the community by providing purse bells and safety chains to local residents. These will be given out at the 2014 Gala by the Homewatch initiative.
Our Thanks To Jimmy
We would like to say a big thank you to Jimmy who provided the entertainment for our awards night last September. His act was amazing and entertained everyone all night . Be sure to give him a call if you need a disco or karaoke party

their doors during 8am to 3pm in school terms.
We are now happily playing, investigating and
learning in the Scout Hut on Old Lane, Rainhill
enjoying all the areas of the Early Years
Foundation Stage both indoors and outdoors.
The children recently enjoyed a visit from Barn Owl Bill and his owls with all the
children bravely holding the Tawney Owl and stroking the others. Even the parents &
carers had the chance to do the same at the end of the session when collecting their
children. We are looking forward to meeting the chicks that hatched in pre-school in
October when they visited from Acorn Venture Farm during the summer term.
The younger children delivered their harvest gifts to the residents in Trent Place while
the older group entertained the residents of Ranleigh Grange with their favourite songs
and harvest baskets.
Did you come along to our scarecrow festival on the Scout Hut grounds where 40+
scarecrows made by the children, nurseries, businesses and residential homes from
Rainhill Village stood proud? Well done to all that took part!
Later in the term we were so excited to meet Father Christmas when he visited our
Christmas Fair and Grotto. Then he also joined us for lunch in a local pub and replied
to our letters that we had sent to Lapland. The older children performed in Christmas
outfits for the residents of Ranleigh Grange while the younger children joined the
Luncheon Club Christmas party in the Village Hall giving a small present to everyone.
There were lots of superheroes and princesses
in the building during World Book Day and
some of the children joined Rocklands Day

Rainhill Gala on tour
The Gala may only be in May but the committee is working all year round to raise funds to put on the event. This could be our quiz sheets (there’s one out now!) or attending events across the region. Pictured below are members of our committee at Lester Drive and the Willowbrook Christmas fayre in St Helens. Pictured with our committee is Mayor of St Helens, Cllr Andy Bowden. Also pictured is George (right) who was determined to win
the chocolate hamper and spent several pounds doing so!
Disabled parking is available at the Millennium Centre (church car park) for disabled users. Please note that spaces are limited and we urge you to consider using the park and ride from Rainhill High if you can. Due to the nature of the event, weather conditions may make it difficult for reduced mobility users to access the entire event, however the event stewards will be on hand to assist where possible.

Alice’s Woodland Easter Trail at
Loyola Hall
Easter Monday - 21st April 2014
4 page souvenir pull-out feature
A couple of years ago one of our committee members thought ‘wouldn’t it be lovely to have an Easter Egg hunt?’, who would have thought it would turn out to be one of the most magical events Rainhill has ever seen?
First came the idea, then the venue and from there the ideas just kept on coming. Alice’s Woodland Easter Trail was in the making.
We never thought that we would be able to sell anywhere near the 500 tickets we had printed, however they were gone within a couple of weeks and this spurred us on to make the day a special one.
Taking ideas from Alice in Wonderland, we had the White Rabbit, Queen of Haircuts, Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee, the Caterpillar and of course Alice herself, most of the characters played by the volunteers of the Gala committee.
The level of support for the event was unprecedented with people from across Rainhill coming together to offer their support, so much so that we were able to have a platoon of soldiers ready to accompany the groups on the trail and we are so grateful to all of the people who helped us with the event.
We were of course grateful to the staff and Jesuits of Loyola Hall. The first task was to put the idea to them and Ruth and Father Matthew were so understanding and trusting that we could pull it off successfully. Without their help and support we couldn't have done it.
Even looking at the weather forecast on the days leading up to the event we thought it was going to be a washout, how wrong we (well perhaps Michael Fish) were, the weather was perfect and really suited the day well.
The Rainhill Gala committee would like to thank everyone who took part in the memorable event. We hope to make a journal of the day with lots of photographs and stories, if you came and have any pictures or videos, please upload them to our Facebook page or drop your prints into the Bridge Barbers on Warrington Road.

SHOP LOCAL IN RAINHILL Did you know that your local village shops often offer better quality and value than the big out of town supermarkets? Our village has virtually everything you need for day to day living. We know times are changing and the convenience of a one-stop shop is appealing however shopping local is great for our village and you can always get great advice from people who care.
Why shop in your village? Firstly lets look at the cost. We took a snap shot survey of a number of items found in various shops across the village including Longsters, Hayes Traditional Butcher, The Fruit Shop and Nicolas in Dane Court. We found that ALL of the items were cheaper in Rainhill than in one of the big supermarkets. These items were not something weird and wonderful, just everyday items like bacon, apples, washing up liquid and soap. Not to mention that the Tony at Hayes Traditional Butcher can tell you where your meat has come from, can the big supermarket do this?
So what about the convenience. Many local shops now accept Chip & Pin cards and there is a FREE cash machine in the Co-Op. Did you know that you can use the Post Office as a bank? Have a look at the Post Office’s website to see if you can use this service. Also have you thought of the cost of driving to the Supermarket? If you drive to Huyton, this is a 10 mile round trip, with petrol is now £6.08p per gallon, have you factored this cost into your shop?
Support the campaign! Have you ever heard the saying use it or lose it? Well this is the case here. Even if you change your shopping habits and use your local shops once a week, this will enable them to keep going. Remember that there are lots of people in our community who cannot get to the big supermarket and rely on our local shops, could this be you one day? Visit your local shops this week and see what’s in store.

events. We regularly take part in various performance opportunities such as performing in London's Wend End and competing at both regional and national competitions. If you would like further information regarding any of our classes or services please contact Natalie Forster on 07568172272 or [email protected]. Can we help your organisation?
Since 2009 we have distributed nearly £15,000 to local groups in and around Rainhill and this year will be no different. Willowbrook Hospice will remain as our main beneficiary however we still want to give away Gala cash to smaller local groups. Those who came to the Gala in 2013 will recall getting a bit wet and obviously this was reflected in the donations. At last year’s awards night in September, we gave away just over £2,000 which, we’re delighted to say, is a lot more than we originally thought we would have! We aim to award money to groups in and around Rainhill who may find it difficult to find funding elsewhere. We don’t have the same criteria as some funding providers, the dreaded 30 page form, nor do we discriminate either. We do however insist that for a group to be eligible, that the entrance or joining
requirements are not overly restricted and that the group operates in the interest of many people. One of the donations made last year was to Rainhill United JFC who used the money to help fund a defibrillator. Obviously we thought this was an outstanding way to use Gala cash and awarded Rainhill United £400.
We don’t know how much we will be able to award this year, if anything, however any surplus funds will be divided between Willowbrook and local causes. If you would like to apply for funding, please apply by sending an email to [email protected] giving as much detail as you can about your organisation. The closing date for applications is 1st July 2014 at which point we will reply to all applicants to let indicate
if we will be looking further into their application. We will of course need to verify all groups and someone from Rainhill Gala will need to come along to a group meeting or event. Terms and conditions apply, these are available on our website and we promise to reply to all applicants.

RAINHILL MODEL RAILWAY CLUB
Rainhill Model Railway club was founded in 1995 and from an initial twenty one people who attended the inaugural meeting in St. Ann’s Parish Rooms. The membership has now grown to fifty, and we have a waiting list. The club meets on three evenings a week in designated clubrooms and the members are busy constructing a number of layouts in gauges from N (1:160) to G (Garden Railway size), as well as working on personal projects.
The club holds two exhibitions a year, one a family show at Christmas time with Santa as an honoured guest, and a main show held over two days on the first weekend in March. Both these events take place in the Rainhill Village Hall.
In addition to our own exhibitions the club attends other events put on by model railway clubs and organisations all over the North of England and Wales. Since inception the club has supported many charities, such as Willowbrook Hospice, NCH, and Rainhill Guides to name but three. The members see the club as an essential part of the Village scene and are proud to be part of the Rainhill Gala organisation.
More information on the club and contact details may be found on the club web site – www.rainhillmrc.org.uk

The 2014 Rainhill Gala Barn Dance
Yet another sell out event, the 5th annual barn dance held at the Village Hall in April saw over 120 people dance the night away to the sound of Two Left Feet. A delicious Cottoms Hot Pot supper was enjoyed as well as a few light refreshments. This year we
saw lots of familiar faces as well as a host of new ones, however not many seemed to remember the dances from last year!!! Even so the caller was fantastic and talked everyone through the steps.
The raffle on the night was the best ever with a special prize of dinner, bed and breakfast thanks to the Forrest Hills Best Western in Frodsham.
Do you have an idea for our next event? If so get in touch via Facebook, Twitter or through our website.

Can you help?
It takes a lot of effort for our volunteers to set up the Gala and to take it all down again after the event. We really appreciate all the help we get and even if you can only spare an hour or so it all helps. We need help putting up gazebo’s, setting up stalls, putting barriers around the
site, even making sure that there’s toilet paper in the loos!!!
If you think you could help then please call Steve on 07951 324 599 or call into the Bridge Barbers and speak to Ann, Julie or Becci,
otherwise come and see us on Sunday 25th from 11am on site.

Rainhill Gala committee members recognised by Parish Council
In 2011 the Rainhill Gala Committee was collectively awarded the Rainhill Parish Good Citizenship award, however since then we are delighted to ‘boast’ that two of our individual committee members have also been awarded the prestigious award, and for good reason! Both kept their award a secret and it was only afterwards that we found out, talk about modesty!
Colin Oldfield has been on the Gala committee since its inception in 2007 and has worked tirelessly since then. That is amongst his other duties which include his involvement in the Millennium Centre and at St Ann's Church, and also being on the committee of the Model Railway Club, we just don’t know where he finds the time! We are extremely grateful to Colin for his hard work and we hope that he continues to be a member of the Gala committee for many years to come.
Similarly Mal Steward has also been with the Gala committee since 2007 and joined us as a representative of
Rainhill Rotary Club where he dedicates most of his voluntary work. Mal plays a big part in the annual Beer Festival held in November and is also the Gala’s Vice Chair. Mal isn’t afraid to get his hands dirty and ‘dress appropriately’ if needed however he does a lot of work behind the scenes of both the Gala and the Rotary Club.
We’d like to say a huge thank you to Colin and Mal for their hard work and well done on behalf of the Gala for receiving their awards, both hugely deserved.
