An initiative for empowering women at
Village Kambala, District Mohali Punjab
The mention of the word 'Sarpanch' generally brings to mind an image of an elderly grey-haired man,
probably with a turban and a big mustache. Rarely does the image of a woman ever come to mind.
Mrs. Surinder Kaur Sarpanch at Kambala Village in Mohali, Punjab along with her 5 female Panch are
rocking rural India. In a patriarchal society, getting this far hasn't been easy. However, being an all-woman
Panchayat board, the issues that women and children face come out easily in the open now.
Swaraj Engines Limited takes to this initiative under Prerna to further empower women. On morning of
26th January 2019 around 70-80 women from agriculture background got together for Flag Hosting
Ceremony at Swaraj Engines Limited Skill Development Centre Kambala Village. This was followed by a
Workshop conducted by renowned Veterinary Doctor & Farmer himself Dr. Varinder Bhalla & Mr.
Gurpreet Singh, Agriculture Specialist on crops. The workshop covered various important interactive
topics of best agricultural practices, dairy farming & Govt Schemes assisting Rural Woman. They were
given hybrid seeds samples for an experiment which yield more quality output. Many were unaware of
important government schemes. The all-women Panchayat took cognizance of that and ensured that
Government schemes were utilized by people of the village. At the end concluded with cultural activities
on the theme of ‘We love India’.
