MYRTHA CHALLENGES
THE BIG RUSH
RIO DE JANEIRO 2016OLYMPIC GAMES
1995 THE BEGINNINGS IN COPACABANAIt’s been 21 years since the last time Myrtha Pools stroked the white
beaches of Rio de Janeiro. It was 1995, and CBDA (Confederacao Brasilera de
Desportos Aquaticos) commissioned the Company to build two pools on the
beach for the second FINA World Short-Course Swimming Championship
in Copacabana. In addition to its permanent pools, Myrtha was already
well known for its self-contained pools for large-scale sports events. The
two pools in Copacabana, one for racing and one for warming up, saw an
outstanding number of hits: as many as four world records were broken in
the Myrtha swimming-pools with as many medals won by the local hero,
Gustavo Borges, who sent the public into raptures on the terraces of the
spectacular pool in Copacabana.
The 2016 Olympic Games in Rio have been a great opportunity and showcase for Myrtha Pools. A total
of 18 pools have been installed in less than two years, including the main swimming competition pools,
several training and warm-up pools in the Olympic park and a number of other jobs in Rio de Janeiro,
Sao Paulo and Fortaleza that have been built or renovated in view of becoming training facilities for
the Games.
It has been a challenging experience, in consideration of the late award of several contracts and a few
obstacles like custom clearings, logistics and generally difficult working conditions in several sites.
Myrtha is very proud to have delivered all the pools on time and with a level of quality that has set a
new standard in Brazil, where Myrtha is now considered a new and important player on the market.
The present document is describing the projects completed, some of the challenges, and also a few
important recognitions that the company has obtained through this experience.

After the 2014 football cup, Rio de Janeiro was in
the limelight again in August 2016 as the stage
of the world’s greatest sports event ever. For
the first time in history, the Olympic Games took
place in a South-American city. The city was
transformed, with brand-new sporting facilities
built next to older ones. And not only in Rio de
Janeiro, all of Brazil felt the excitement of the
Olympic Games. Of the many training areas built
in Brazil’s main cities, Myrtha Pools has designed
as many as 9 Centres and a total of 18 swimming-
pools, going through tough technical, logistics
and functional challenges but getting there first,
every single time.
In addition to its swimming pools, Myrtha Pools
sent the expertise of its staff to Rio. Throughout
the event, Myrtha’s technical teams were there to
run and service the equipment and pools, offering
unfailing assistance and 360-degree expertise.
Those who made the success of the Myrtha
Pools Olympic projects include Gustavo Borges,
Myrtha’s Ambassador, and Haller Ramos de
Freitas Jr. of Myrtha Pools Brazil. Their great
efforts and commitment have helped Myrtha win
its Olympic challenge for Rio 2016, conquering
the frontiers of a growing market with a wide
range of new on-going projects.

ESTADIO OLIMPICO DE DESPORTOS
AQUATICOS2 pools
Like the other facilities developed for the Rio
Olympics 2016, the Olympic Stadium for the
swimming competitions and water-polo finals has
been designed as an entirely temporary facility,
in an international urban setting. As temporary
as are the two Myrtha pools built in the Stadium,
where the first record was broken by Myrtha
Pools itself by installing the two swimming-pools
in just two and a half months. After the Olympics,
the Aquatics Stadium will be dismantled and so
will the swimming-pools, which will be removed,
downsized and relocated to other parts of the city,
as permanent fixtures. Built at the heart of Rio’s
Olympic Park, the Stadium is a veritable gem inside
and out, its outer surfaces decorated by the famous
Brazilian artist Adriana Varejao. Inside, Myrtha built
two 50m swimming-pools, a competitive one and
ESTADIO OLIMPICO DE DESPORTOS AQUATICOS RIO DE JANEIRO (Olympic Park)
a training one, with a total capacity of 3.7 million
litres of water each. The most innovative technical
devices include a Defender filter, known as the
best regenerative media filter in the world. The
engineering wonder that are the Olympic Stadium
and the Myrtha pools is the ideal setting for the
impressive emotions that the swimming races and
the water-polo finals have lavished on the public.
Myrtha 50x25x3 m competition pool
Myrtha is the most exclusive
and advanced technology in
the swimming pool industry:
its patented pre-enginee-
red modular pool system,
featuring laminated stain-
less steel panels and a
buttress system, enables a
Myrtha structure to attain
perfect waterproofing, as
well as strength and stur-
diness. Perfect waterproo-
fing is ensured by the unique
process of bonding PVC to
the Myrtha® steel panels: a
hard PVC membrane is hot
laminated to the steel in the
manufacturing process.
DEFENDER FILTRATIONThe Defender filter is famous for being the most innovative filtration system ever. It is eco-friendly while ensuring the perfect quality of swimming pool water. The Defender filter uses perlite as a filter medium. Perlite is a non- toxic fossil powder that can filter particles as fine as one micrometre. This medium reduces the amount of chemicals required while dramatically increasing water quality and transparency.

MARIA LENK2 pools
Iconic Brazilian swimmer Maria Lenk was the
first South-American woman to take part in the
Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 1932 and in
Berlin in 1936. This modern swimming centre, built
in 2007 to celebrate the 15th Pan American Games
and now run by the Brazilian Olympic Committee,
is dedicated to her. A gem of environmental
sustainability, the centre is home to a 50m
competitive pool and a diving pool. One of the two
swimming-pools having hosted the synchronised
swimming and water polo events, except the
finals, and the other the diving competitions.
In addition to the two existing pools, Myrtha added
another two. In record-breaking time, Myrtha
Pools built a 50m permanent swimming-pool for
the synchronised swimming athletes to warm up
and a 25m temporary warm-up water-polo pool,
in the area around the existing pools.

The most daunting yet most rewarding challenge
for Myrtha was building the two twin tempo-
rary competitive swimming-pools at Parque dos
Atletas, commissioned by the Ministry of the Air
Force, as UNIFA. A spectacular view of the moun-
tains and the shores of Lagoa de Jacarepaguá is a
perfect setting for the Olympic village where the
athletes stayed during the races.
The first real challenge for Myrtha was finding
2 Myrtha 50x25x2 m training pools
Due to the very late award of the contract (March), the two pools have been built in a real record time, without overlooking the top quality standard and the millimet-ric precision always Myrtha Pools’ hallmarks. With only three weeks of design and production, the installation took one month and a half for both the pools, which have been completed just few days before the Games.

a solution for the flooring the swimming-pools
had to be built on. The surface was cracked, the
drains could not be removed, and the gradient
was even 8-10 cm. Using a set of steel plates
and foundations to anchor the body of the pool
to and an adjusting system for every single part
of each Myrtha swimming-pool, the final result
was two perfectly steady pools, ready to host the
athletes’ training sessions.
We are pleased to state that the two Myrtha pools designed and installed for Parque dos Atletas fully correspond to the main Olympic pool project, except for the depth. Both pools perfectly fit our requirement, giving all athlets the possibility to train in facilities equals to the one they will compete in.

Not far from the busy Copacabana, there’s the
exclusive “Clube do Flamengo”, famous for its
football team, one of Brazil’s strongest four, as
well as for its excellent sporting facilities.
They include a competitive swimming-pool,
chosen by the Olympic swimming teams as a
training pool.
The existing swimming-pool required substantial
renovations, but replacing the entire course
would have been very expensive in terms of
time and money. In remaking the 50m pool, the
challenge for Myrtha was developing a special
application of the RenovAction technology that
would restrict the renovation to a few technical
devices, and avoid a costly demolition. A panel
entirely coated in a PVC cloth was installed on
top of the concrete edge of the old swimming-
pool to raise the level of the swimming-pool by
80 cm above the old one. At the same time, such
solution would also accommodate the new pipes
on the original flooring of the existing pool.
With the RenovAction technology, the old pool
could be very quickly refitted, and the centre did
not have to be shut down.

UNIVERSIDADEFEDERAL DO
RIO DE JANEIRO 1 pool
An excellent ‘academic’ job, in every respect.
This would be the right definition for Myrtha
Pools’ engineering efforts in the rebuilding of
the competitive pool of the greatest university in
Brazil and one of the best academic and research
centres in Latin America.
The existing 50m swimming-pool, built many
years ago with materials that do not meet the
applicable standards, was in a state of total
disrepair, and so were the filtering systems and
the manifolds, which, secured to the outer flooring,
made walking along the pool quite dangerous.
The pool frame was repaired by a combination
of technological solutions: RenovAction and
Myrtha. RenovAction to refit the inside of the
original pool, Myrtha as a solution to make the
swimming-pool deeper.
70cm-high outer Myrtha panels were installed
on the outer flooring of the swimming-pool,
bringing the pool floor down to 3 m. A new
deck was built, flush with the new panels, to
cover the existing flooring and the exposed
piping. So, Myrtha gave a functional, completely
safe and top-quality facility back to the University.
As well as the state of the original pool, another
daunting challenge that Myrtha had to face in this
project and that it successfully overcome was
installing the pools in extremely tough weather
conditions: 40 days of rain in the first three of its
four months at the Centre.

A special solution was implemented in the
mechanical room, the beating heart of the whole
swimming-pool, which takes water from the pool,
disinfects it and removes impurities, to keep it
constantly clean and suitable for swimming.
Due to space restrictions, the existing facility was
entirely renovated and laid out on two levels, partly
to provide easy access to the servicing staff.
Myrtha Pools installed all of the filtering systems
in the basement, where four old sand filters, worn
out, undersized and no longer compliant with the
applicable regulations, were replaced with one
single large Defender filter that is able to provide
much better filtration quality and faster turnover.
The Chemical treatment room, where water is
disinfected, and the electric panels were put on the
ground floor, just above such room. A distinctive
solution that was craftily set up in the small space
next to the stairs that lead up to the Mechanical
room.

The new Myrtha swimming-pool built inside Rio’s
Universidade da Força Aérea was commissioned
by the Brazilian Ministry of the Air Force one
year before the opening of the Olympic Games.
The Ministry made such choice straightaway to
have the highest quality standards for a sporting
facility that – a training pool for the Olympic
Games – will stay on as a permanent fixture in
the Ministry’s university campus. Installed in
under two months, the swimming-pool and the
sporting centre will be an outstanding legacy for
Rio: there is no other facility within miles that
can boast such a prestigious centre of excellence
and training for future athletes.
As for the Centro Paraolimpico of Sao Paulo,
this swimming-pool too is equipped with the
innovative Virtual Trainer system, with LED
strips at the bottom of the courses, to monitor
the swimmers’ performance as they train.

CENTRO PARAOLÍMPICO
BRASILEIRO 6 pools
Started in 2013, Centro Paraolimpico São Paulo
hosts facilities for as many as 15 different sports
and is the largest Paralympic sports centre in
Brazil, as well as one of the best three in the world.
Centro Paraolimpico São Paulo has been created
for a very specific purpose: give pride of place to
technology and cutting-edge solutions in a new
sporting facility.
The swimming-pools are all by Myrtha Pools, there
are six of them scattered around the centre, they
are all indoor pools and cover most Paralympic
swimming events. There is a 50m competitive
pool, a 25m training pool, and 4 therapy pools.
Myrtha’s performance has not taken long to show
up, right at the start of the building process.
Actually, Myrtha’s builders’ teams instantly
noticed that there were extra structural features
in the areas in which the 6 swimming-pools had
to be installed. This meant adapting the design of
the pools there and then, to meet the regulatory
ranges.
So, due to the excellence of Myrtha’s cutting-edge
technology as well as the skills and experience of
its engineers, a perfectly flexible design and ease
of installation, the pools were built by the deadline.
In terms of high-tech, Myrtha widely fulfilled the
Centre’s requirements with new accessories for
the therapy pools, such as a special upstream
swimming system, special hydro-massage jets,
and a 6-42°C thermal control system, for the most
therapeutic system ever.
The 50m pool was equipped with the Virtual
Trainer, an exclusive system with LED strips on the
bottom, designed to monitor the athletes’ training.

ESPORTE CLUBEPINHEIROS
1 pool
Founded in the late 19th century by German
immigrants, Esporte Clube Pinheiros is now the
biggest sports centre in Latin America. With over
38,000 members, it is home to 44 sections and 44
different sports, which over the years have earned
several Olympic medals to the Club and to Brazil,
for instance those won by such great swimmers
as Gustavo Borges and Cesar Cielo Filho.
The swimming section has a 50 m competitive
indoor pool, built in 1980. The same pool in which
at the end of 2009 Cesar Cielo Filho broke the
world record in 50m freestyle. Even then, though,
the Pinheiros pool was far distant from its glories
and required consistent refurbishments.
Inspired by Myrtha technology (oddly enough, it is
German too, like the Pinheiros), Myrtha Pools has
developed the RenovAction system to refurbish
the courses as well as the filtration systems,
neither of which met the applicable structural and
environmental requirements.
New racing accessories were added to the 50m
pool, such as removable heads and Myrtha Track
Start blocks.
Now, the Pinheiros has a new swimming-pool,
which will certainly see new records being broken
and new swimming stars shine bright.
In the meantime, the Club will save water (and
money) now that the filtration system has had a
makeover. Compared with the old system, the new
one can actually save up to 80% water, which is
about 10,000 litres of water a day.
RENOVACTION TECHNOLOGYOver time, many sporting facilities need to adapt to international safety or racing standards and are
confronted with structural issues such as worn materials. RenovAction is Myrtha Pools’ exclusive
patented technology that has been designed for the full or partial refurbishment of any existing swimming
pool. With RenovAction, the old facilities do not need to be demolished, thus saving on installation costs
and timing. The surface of the original pool acts as a backing, on which new parts are installed, so only
the wall or bottom accessories need to be replaced.

MYRTHA TRACK-START BLOCKS
After a thorough design and development process, and
with FINA’s approval, Myrtha’s new track-start blocks are now used in any
international race and chosen by all of the world’s most important swimming facilities to enable
athletes to train on the same start-blocks they will use at the races. The Track-Start blocks help
swimmers with their starting trim, giving them a faster rush and up to a tenth of a second less in their
response to the word ‘go!’.

2 pools
Two stars in stardom. This is the right name for the
two permanent swimming-pools in Brazil’s biggest
Training Centre and one of the world’s most
modern competitive training centres. A brand-new
facility that will be used at the 31st Olympic Games
by the foreign swimming teams for their training.
The centre includes facilities for 26 of the 40
Olympic sports, such as football pitches, running
tracks, skateboard rinks, BMX lanes, tennis and
volleyball courts, accommodation for 250 athletes,
and, of course, two new Myrtha swimming-pools: a
50m competitive pool and a diving pool.
Fortaleza is the first project completed by Myrtha in
Brazil, designed by Paulo Pinheiro, one of the most
important architects in South America, official con-
sultant to the Brazilian Swimming Federation and a
great supporter of Myrtha Pools’ technology.
In his project, Pinheiro considered not only the po-
tential sporting performance of a Myrtha swim-
ming-pool, but also its distinctive technical and
BACKSTROKE STARTING SYSTEM
The new backstroke starting system developed in partnership with Omega and approved by FINA helps backstroke swimmers set off for the race. The system provides athletes with a steady grip on the walls, for a faster, safer take-off and no risk of slipping. In addition, this helps them improve their performance and time
structural strengths. Actually, Myrtha’s technol-
ogy turned out to be a winner, once again, when
the swimming-pools had to be built on unsteady
ground, such as the clayey one of the Fortaleza
Centre. Unlike traditionally-built swimming-pools,
Myrtha’s ones are flexible structures, which can be
adapted to the endless shifts induced by subsid-
ence in clayey soil. What matters most in Myrtha’s
pools are the details too, i.e. the racing accessories,
the result of a thorough R&D process promoted
by Myrtha Pools. Actually, the 50m pool is provid-
ed with special mosaic targets, Myrtha Track-Start
blocks and a Myrtha Backstroke starting system.

MYRTHA POOLS GOLD MEDALS IN RIO!
Dear Roberto and Trevor,I want to express my sincere thanks to the members of the Myrtha Pools team in Rio for your outstanding help in resolving the water treatment issues at the Maria Lenk Aquatics venue.
This was a difficult situation, logistically but also politically and in terms of the image of both the Rio 2016 Olympics and the Aquatics events, and your efforts which went well beyond the call of duty, have contributed immeasurably to turning the situation around.
I greatly appreciate the professionalism shown by the team, and appreciate the excellent collaboration and partnership between FINA and Myrtha Pools.
Cornel MarculescuFINA Executive Director
After Atlanta 1996, Beijing 2008 and London 2012,
and with a long tradition of involvement in elite
swimming competitions, Myrtha Pools is proud
of its unrivalled aquatic technologies and of its 18
gold medals gained in Rio!...notwithstanding some
highly publicized problems.
Other than the performances of the world’s top
athletes, one of the talking points of the Rio 2016
Olympics has been the pool water turning green at
the Maria Lenk Aquatic Center, the second of the
Games’ aquatic venues.
So what happened to Rio's Olympic diving pool
turning green?
When the water turned green at the pool on Tues-
day 9th, it caused a social media firestorm. There
was no official explanation why it occurred until
Wednesday afternoon when FINA, the international
governing body of aquatics, issued a statement:
“FINA can confirm that the reason for the unusual
water color observed during the Rio diving compe-
titions is that the water tanks ran out of some of the
chemicals used in the water treatment process.
"A sudden change in alkalinity, was the reason. The
water polo pool has been effected the same way,"
Rio 2016's Mario Andrada said during a news
conference. "People in charge could and should
have done more intensive testing during the day."
Curiously, the media firestorm immediately
involved Myrtha. The pools at Maria Lenk, were
built for the 2007 Pan-American Games. They were
not new installations and were not provided by
Myrtha. The company had nothing to do with the
installation or the operations. During the Games
the Diving and Waterpolo pool management was
under local committee responsibility.
Actually the reason the water turned green is that
the obsolete filtration, circulation and disinfec-
tion systems (with a manual chemicals dosage) of
those old pools are not able to monitor and control
the see-through water quality needed for interna-
tional swimming competition.
Moreover, in order to quickly restore water quality
in the pool hosting the synchro competitions, Rio
officials went for a drastic solution: they drained
the pool and filled it with the water of one of the
warm-up pool just outside the Maria Lenk Aquatic
Center – a pool which was installed by Myrtha.
Myrtha Pools supported Rio officials during this
operation and the pool was filled in ten hours with
new crystal clear water: a must for synchro
athletes who need to be seen underwater as well.
Myrtha Pools designed two new warm-up pools
for the Maria Lenk Aquatic Center refurbishment.
The new water tank has been installed just outside
the stadium, close to existing pools involved in the
green-water-gate.
FINA’s statement emphasized that “ the swimming
pools installed at the Maria Lenk complex are not
Myrtha Pools equipment”, adding “the FINA Partner
is only responsible for the installation and mainte-
nance of the competition and training pools at the
Olympic Aquatics Stadium, presently being used for
the swimming events at the Rio 2016 Games.”
