Kent NolleyRocky Mountain Calvary Church4285 N. Academy BlvdColorado Springs, CO 80918, USA
Dear Kent,
I hope this finds you and your family doing well. Quite a bit has happened since wewere last in Colorado. We made it to Mexico and experienced some mission work inGuanajuato and spent time on the coast as well. Since the spring we have been back inWashington and are now preparing to move to Manila Philippines to teach at FaithAcademy.
Faith Academy, a Christian K-12 school primarily for missionary children located outsideof Manila Philippines, has teacher positions which need to be filled for this school year.We have been accepted by Faith Academy and TeachBeyond, a mission organizationfocused on reaching the world for Christ through education. To meet the immediateneed Sunshine has begun teaching via the internet and her 58 students are eager tohave their teacher in person. Faith Academy also has need for a business and Asianand Philippine history teacher along with a tennis coach, and is eager for Kyle to take upthese duties.
We are well suited to meet the needs at Faith Academy. Sunshine holds a degree inSpanish from the University of Oregon and has completed all the coursework for aMasters in Teaching through Concordia University. Kyle holds a Bachelors of Arts inAsian Studies from the University of Oregon and an Asian focused MBA from theUniversity of Hawaii. We have both lived and worked in Asia and Sunshine has taught
Korean students (in Vietnam) which make up 40% of the Faith Academy student body.
Rocky Mountain Calvary Church and its members can support our ministry throughprayer. While Sunshine has been teaching online and we prepare to move, severalobstacles have come in our way and each time, through the power of prayer we haveseen the blocks removed. We know more and even greater challenges are coming andwe will need your prayers.
In addition to prayer support, as mission workers, we need monthly financial support.Kyle is hoping to work part/full-time in business and has been in contact with potentialemployers in Manila. In order for us to mobilize quickly and for Sunshine to take up herteaching duties we will need a minimum of $2,500 per month. TeachBeyond hopes that
most of this amount comes from “supporting churches”…as do we. If we meet ourchallenge goal of $4,100, Kyle will be able to work full-time with Faith Academy andTeachBeyond.
In His service,
Kyle, Sunshine, Tobias and Astrid Hopkins

Faith Academy
Introduction
KyleAs a young boy I felt a personal connection with God and knew the power in thename of Jesus. In my late twenties I was living in Hanoi, Vietnam working, in anMBA program and most importantly growing in faith at the Hanoi InternationalFellowship. I had attended Church in my youth, as a university student andyoung professional with varying degrees of regularity. It was only in Hanoi that Iattended regularly and also pursued God through reading the Bible and Christianbooks and meeting with other believers during the week. My baptism in Hanoiwas symbolized my complete surrender to God.
My calling to ministry is a triangle of TeachBeyond, Faith Academy and the Asianbusiness community. TeachBeyond has asked me to act as a consultant as theyopen Christian schools in South East Asia; their first school will be in Hanoi,Vietnam. Faith Academy would like me to teach an introduction to businesscourse, a South East Asian history course and coach tennis. Thirdly as abeliever with Asian business experience and education I have opportunities tobecome employed in Manila. Based on our limited time to fundraise I amcurrently focusing on pursuing employment opportunities.
As a business professional my challenge has been applying Biblical standards ona daily basis. For example when filing a total loss claim for a helicopter Iprovided an honest description of the incident to the claims adjuster even thoughdoing so would potentially reduce our payment. The claims adjuster was soimpressed by my honesty that he found additional coverage to pay for the loss. Ihave learned to stand for truth and know the Lord is my rock, not man.
SunshineMy parents separated when I was a baby. I was taken care of by my mother (who is Orthodox Catholic and has practiced New Age) but I did have influencesfrom my Father (who is atheist) and my step-mother who experiments inBuddhism, Hinduism, and some New Age spiritual practices, and my step-father who recently told me that in his early 20s he gave his life to Christ but since hasexplored New Age practices as well.
After arriving in Hanoi, Vietnam I was able to make a connection with a KoreanAmerican woman who at the time was the director of Samaritan’s purse. Sheoffered me a place to stay in her home for a month. She prayed with me and

asked me to go to Church at the Hanoi International Fellowship. The preachingand words in the worship songs hit me so hard I cried all the way through the
service and felt I was able to finally put everything aside and commit my life toGod.
What followed was great support from the Hanoi International Fellowshipcommunity. I prayed the prayer to accept Jesus into my life and right away I
jumped into Bible studies and anything I could get my hands on to grow as aChristian. I am indebted to the families, singles, and overseas workers andmissionaries who adopted me as their owndaughter. I hold a very special place in my heart for the Hanoi Christian Family.
My calling to ministry is driven by my education and love for Spanish and
teaching. Despite teaching online late into the evenings I continue to beenergized by my work. One student told me, “Yo soy de Bali” (I am from Bali),that is where I lived as a young girl! When I get to the classroom I will utilize BestPractice in teaching methods and integrate Spanish worship and even praisesalsa music to keep things lively.

Jumping Off Point September 9 2011
Mabuhay Bienvenidos, Welcom
“We have a desperate need fora Spanish Teacher!” That’s whatthe HR Director at Faith Academyin Manila said when we called inearly July. She followed with “wedon’t pay teachers – callTeachBeyond”.
Sunshine and I looked upTeachBeyond online and learnedthey were a mission organizationfocused on education. FaithAcademy is a K-12 mission schooloutside of Manila, Philippines. The following is from their Maynewsletter.
“Our superintendent and principals have called our school to a time of fasting and prayer this week. We are desperately short on staff for next school year. As I pray, I am reminded of the parable of the unjust judge and the importune widow that my pastor preached on yesterday (Luke 18:1-8). We cry out to God.” –Becca Van Weerdhuizen
I had been crying out to God for
the right fit for my Spanish teaching education and experience; immediately the conviction and excitement was there to serve where there is great need! -Sunshine
Taking a leap of faith
The Principal of Faith Academy happened to be in Seattle theweek we called and we were able to meet with him and his
family. He commented, “I am just continually amazed at how God meets our needs, here we are looking for a Spanish teacher and she is on Orcas Island when I happen to be visiting my brother in Seattle for two weeks

We were living in a sleepy Mexican surfing village
when I got the news I was being “released”. It
was not a surprise but that did not make me
eel any better. We could not stay in Punta de
Mita, the nearest schools were half an hour
away, we had no car, now we had no job and
summer, the slow season, was about to start.
Thanks to help from Shay, a friend from the
LaFuente Church in Bucerias and a local girl
who watched Tobias and Astrid, Sunshine and
sat down and gave our goals to God. I can
now report that all our goals have all been met
n God’s creative way.
Goal: Become closer as a family
God’s Creativity: I learned a housewife’s job really is never done and how to take care of my children
beyond the evening bath and book.
Goal: Have a good school for Tobias and Astrid
God’s Creativity: On Orcas both Tobias and Astrid were taught by their Grandmother and now will be
enrolling in one of the best schools in Asia, Faith Academy.
Goal: Have a stronger marriage
God’s Creativity: Be careful giving this goal to God, he tests with fire. By being on Orcas Island with
very little money I got in touch with Sunshine’s deep drive and desire to make a difference in the world.
Goal: Open a juice bar serving healthy, international fare in a positive environment
God’s Creativity: I found the perfect location, the landlord was even willing to remodel and the health
department all but passed me on the phone. Then a man also named Kyle, approached the landlord and
ented the space to open a …. juice bar. During the summer I had met a woman at Church whosedream was to run a juice bar on Orcas. Kyle, not me, has asked her to run the juice bar because she
was “close with God”.
Goal: To grow in faith
God’s Creativity: I have no job, live on an island (30 minutes from “town”), the car has been breaking
down – it takes great faith to not “lose it” daily. Doors open for Sunshine to teach at Faith Academy.
Faith Academy would like me to teach as well and TeachBeyond has requested I support the opening of
schools in Asia – all without a salary. Yet my faith in God increases as I watch Him come through on
every need.

“Coincidences are God’s way of staying anonymous” Albert Einstein
A few “coincidences” that lead us to decide this was the right fit
o The Philippines is the “Latin country in Asia”, Kyle’s specialization is Asia and Sunshine’s the Latin
world
o Kyle attended kindergarten at Faith Academy
o Sunshine was led to the Lord by a Korean American woman, taught Korean children and their
parents for almost three years, and now teaches Korean high school students at Faith Academy
whose student body is nearly 40% Korean
o Our good friends in Hanoi were missionaries and Christian overseas Filipino workers
o God put friends into our lives on Orcas who, after applying we learned are Faith Academy alumni
o Tobias and Astrid’s grandparents relocated to Manila the same week we began the application
process
o Sunshine wanted to teach Spanish in Hanoi but only a lone Dane took her up on the offer leadingher to lament “I will never teach Spanish in Asia – what was I thinking?”
o Sunshine struggled with God over teaching English in Hanoi to pay the bills, when really wanting
to use her degree...10 years later God has provided work in the field she loves, in Asia!
o Tobias always wanted a big pool at school
o Tobias and Astrid are excited to live in a city called “Vanilla”

The last few years have been a training time, and now we know what for.
We helped care for Sunshine’s Grandmother, Shirley Hovelman, from 2008-2010 in our home in
Ashland, Oregon. Serving in this way brought us closer to God and each other. We also got to know
the miracle energy God can provide when serving under great pressure and strain, with a nursing child,
3 year old, and two full-time jobs and many other obstacles before us. We saw what God could do
through sacrifice and love. In 2010, after Shirley passed away, we were convicted to follow God’s
instructions on our next step in life. We donated most of our things and put the rest in storage and hit
the road to find out where to next.
Kyle was approved to work remotely so we traveled for one year in Washington, Colorado, and Mexico
meeting with different churches, missions, work opportunities, and connecting with family and friends.
During this time Kyle was looking for new career opportunities and found some interested companies
but those that were interested had limited funds to add an employee. He was even flown to D.C. for
interviews with USAID. When we read the letter that said he was not selected we were disappointed
but also relieved that the next year would not be spent with Kyle in Afghanistan. We were told to be
excited that God had something greater for us, which at the time was easy to understand but hard tobelieve. Now we know what that is – let’s get to work.

TEACHBEYOND STATEMENTS OF IDENTITY AND FAITH
STATEMENT OF IDENTITY
TeachBeyond is a Christian organization, whose staff and volunteers are inspired by the
message, life and example of Jesus. Our mission is to demonstrate God’s unconditional love for
all people by serving Him and others, in fulfillment of the Great Commission.
We embrace the revelation given by God in the Christian Scriptures, the Old and NewTestaments. We likewise receive and accept the faith, which is taught in the Scriptures and
summarized in such orthodox statements of the whole Christian church as the Apostles’ Creed
and the Nicene Creed. We understand our own faith in continuity with the Protestant
confessions of the Reformation and the evangelical awakenings in subsequent centuries.
We further share the ideals of movements such as the Lausanne Covenant (1974)
regarding the authority of Scripture, the priority of evangelism, the need for Christian social
responsibility and personal holiness, the costliness and urgency of world mission, and theimportance of Christian education.
STATEMENT OF FAITH
We believe:
1. In God, existing as Father, Son and Holy Spirit, yet one in being and essence.2. That the Holy Scriptures as originally given by God are divinely inspired, infallible,
entirely trustworthy, and constitute the only supreme authority in all matters of faith
and conduct.
3. In the dignity of all people, made male and female in God’s image to love, be holy
and care for creation, yet corrupted by sin, which incurs divine wrath and judgement.
4. That salvation is solely possible through the vicarious and atoning death of God’sson, Jesus Christ and that all human beings find their salvation through faith in Him.
5. That those who are saved through faith in Christ will be raised to eternal life in
heaven and that those who are lost will be raised to eternal punishment in hell.
6. In the unity of the Spirit with the body of Christ, the Church, consisting of
regenerated, true believers, for whom the risen Christ now makes intercession in
heaven.
7. In the imminent and personal return of the Lord Jesus Christ.
8. That the church is commanded to go into the entire world and preach the gospel to
every person, baptizing and teaching those who believe.
