GATHERING
Voluntary O MENSCH, BEWEIN DEIN SÜNDE GROSS, BWV 622 J. S. Bach O Humanity, Weep for Your Great Sin
*Prayer of the Day
O God, light of the minds that know you,
life of the souls that love you, strength of the thoughts that seek you:
Help us so to know you that we may truly love you,
so to love you that we may fully serve you,
whose service is perfect freedom; through Jesus Christ our Lord,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and forever.
Amen.
*Hymn 687 bulletin, p. 5 Our God, Our Help in Ages Past ST. ANNE
*Prayer of Confession
Merciful God,
you pardon all who truly repent and turn to you.
We humbly confess our sins and ask your mercy.
We have not loved you with a pure heart,
nor have we loved our neighbors as ourselves.
We have not done justice, loved kindness,
or walked humbly with you, our God.
Have mercy on us, O God, in your loving-kindness.
In your great compassion, cleanse us from our sin.
Do not cast us away from your presence,
or take your Holy Spirit from us.
Restore to us the joy of your salvation
and sustain us with your bountiful Spirit.
Silence is kept.

THE WORD
Prayer for Illumination
First Lesson Genesis 22:1-14
Psalm 13,
Refrain, No. 471, v. 1 bulletin, p. 6 O Lord, Hear My Prayer HEAR MY PRAYER
Verses sung by the Cantor
How long, O Lord? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me?
How long shall I have perplexity in my mind, and grief in my heart, day after day?
How long shall my enemy triumph over me?
Look upon me and answer me, O Lord, My God; give light to my eyes, lest I sleep in death;
lest my enemy say, “I have defeated you,” and my foes rejoice that I have fallen.
But I trust in your unfailing love; my heart is joyful because of your saving help.
I will sing to the Lord, who has dealt with me richly.
Refrain, No. 471, v. 2 bulletin, p. 6 The Lord Is My Song HEAR MY PRAYER
Second Lesson Romans 6:12-23

Gospel Reading Matthew 10:40-42
Sermon
*Affirmation of Faith: The Apostles’ Creed Hymnal, Page 35 (front)
I believe in God, the Father almighty, Maker of heaven and earth,
and in Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord;
who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried;
he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead;
he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand
of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge
the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost;
the holy catholic church; the communion of saints;
the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body;
and the life everlasting. Amen.

Gloria in Excelsis Deo
(“Glory to God in the
Highest”) is a hymn of
praise developed from
Luke 2:14 (sung by the
angels to the shepherds
announcing Christ’s
birth).
The reader offers a
phrase to mark the end
of each reading, such as,
The Word of the Lord, or
Holy Wisdom, Holy Word.
The assembly responds,
Thanks be to God.

The hymn sung
immediately before the
reading of the Gospel is
called the Gradual, or
Gradual Hymn, which
refers to the step
(Latin gradus) from which
it was chanted in
medieval church practice.
After the reading of the
Gospel the reader says,
The Gospel of the Lord.
The assembly responds,
Praise be to you, O
Christ.
Various forms of the
Apostles’ Creed were
used from the second
century onward.

thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our debts,

and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
