Symbols
Sachi’s garden helps symbolizing her approach to happiness.
“...feels like a dream to be living this life...I’m always waiting for the moment I woke up.” (Tsukiyama 57)
Sachi’s house is defined as her hiding spot
“It was for you and Matsu that I came, not for myself.” (Tsukiyama 58)

Sachi’s Garden
“A dry landscape… It’s beautiful,’ I said, amazed at how the different light and dark stones could create such texture and illusion.” (Tsukiyama 40)
Different form of beauty than Matsu’s garden, Sachi’s is more barren and simplistic.

Sachi’s Garden (Continued)
“‘How can you ruin stones, Stephen-san? You can only rearrange them, and who knows if it won’t be for the better?’” (Tsukiyama 77)

Sachi’s dry garden paints a picture of her past experiences, and its beauty shows her outlook on life.
Sachi’s House● Once Sachi got Hansen’s disease she had
nowhere to go● She was not brave enough to commit seppuku.● She started hiding and Matsu found her● Matsu took her to Yamaguchi ● She lived with Sumiko● At first, she was afraid of the other lepers due to
their appearance but grew more accustomed to it and befriended them
● Matsu built her a new house further from the village

Mood at Sachi’s House & Garden
● Sachi’s house at Yamaguchi has significance.● It isn’t her original home and she only moved there
because she had Hansen’s disease.● Surrounded by a constant reminder of why she isn’t
married, has no children, and is scarred for life.● Yet she finds happiness● Garden helps● Matsu and Stephen

Importance of Sachi’s House & Garden
She finds strength in herself to carry on through life and not be overly weighed down by her leprosy. This is in a large part due to Sachi’s frequent tending and adjusting of her garden. It is a soothing, relaxing, and therapeutic activity.

Themes“‘Sachi-san, you’ve only known the ordinary kind of beauty which appears on the outside. Perhaps you now desire something deeper...’” (Tsukiyama 151)
There are multiple forms of beauty. Although many people are more familiar with traditional beauty, like Kenzo and Sachi were considered when they were young, there is also beauty that can be found in Sachi’s survival story and in the emotions she portrays in her garden.
