TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Some mes human rela onships go awry, but Christ’s choice for us is irrevocable. In marriage celebra ons, the Church always recalls God’s faithfulness to help prepare married couples for enduring the inevitable rough spots. The Byzan-
ne liturgy does this by adorning the couple with crowns that remind them of the martyr’s crown. The couple therefore takes on a voca on of witnessing to the sacredness of life in all of its suffering and joy, and of keeping their eyes fixed on the banquet of heaven.
In Eastern theology, people have a liturgical voca on to give God praise, and marriage fits within that plan. It is not so much saying prayers that counts, but becoming prayer. Interes ngly, in this liturgy the couple never u ers a word other than joining in the community’s chants; there are no marriage vows as such. There is therefore not a hint of our Western Chris an sense that marriage is a legal contract. Rather, it is all about living out one’s bap smal voca on, embracing the cross, pouring oneself out in love, and opening to the grace of the Holy Spirit. —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
Next weekend we will be col-lec ng food for our local food pantry at Lutheran Church of the Cross. Help feed the needy.
Thank you for your generous support.

Proclaiming the Word: Lector Training Workshop Training Loca on: in Church
Lectors have a cri cal role in the celebra on of the Mass. Since lectors proclaim not just any word, but the Word of God, it is essen al that they develop the skills required to communicate God’s message competently. Through the use of voice, eye contact and personal presence, lectors help God’s Word come alive for the assembly.
This training will provide the skills and self-confidence needed for those who wish to become lectors in their own parish or for any lector who would like a “refresher” course.

GRIEF SUPPORT FOR ADULTS “No one ever told me that grief felt so much like
fear” ...C.S. Eliot
St. Cecilia Ministry of Care and Bereavement will again have a grief support program for adults, “The Healing Journey” which will begin on Tuesday, October 15th. This six week program is open to adult men and women, who have suffered the loss of a loved one through death. The group will meet from 2:00-3:30 pm in the Bernardin Room of Church on the following dates:
October 15, 22, 29, November 5, 12, 19
Grief work is hard, and it hurts. At mes you may feel like you are emo onally out of control, people say you should be “over it by now”, but you’re not; you may be angry, depressed and/or confused. A sup-port group helps you understand that your feelings are normal, guides you in understanding the grief process, and gives you a “safe place”, a confiden al se ng where what is said stays in the room. If you would like to join us or have ques ons,
please call: Dina Sar at 847-437-6208
You may also fill out the form below and mail it to Dina at St. Cecilia or
drop it in the weekly collec on. You will receive a call before the first session.
If you were in a previous group and are having a set back, you are welcome to join us again.

Mighty God, we thank you for sending your light into all the world to reveal that you are the Father of all, to show us that you are leading them to yourself, the good and the bad, those who are near to you and those who are far away. We thank you that through all this your name may be acknowledged and honored. We thank you that
we may live from your hand and that everyone may see your work on earth and be filled with praise. May the light which you have sent to earth in Jesus Christ shine brightly for us and penetrate our hearts so that we open ourselves to it with joy, and worship the Savior. Bless us and give us your Spirit; without your Spirit we can do nothing. May we receive help from you every day. Amen.
