Taxonomy• Class: Reptilia
• Order: Crocodylia
• Family: Crocodylidae
• Genus: Crocodylus
• Species: Crocodylus
Porosus
Size of saltwater crocodile
• Baby crocodile measure about 25-30 cm (9.8-12in) long and weigh an average of 70 g (2.5oz)
• Youth crocodile will grow to 1 m (3.3ft) long and weigh 2.5 kg (5.5lb)
• Males’ sexual maturity grow about 3.3 m (11ft) in 16 years of age
• Females’ sexual maturity grow about 2.1 m (6.9ft) in between 12-14 years of age
Size of saltwater crocodile
• To become an adult, a male saltwater crocodile is normally 4.3 to 5.2 m (14-17ft) long weighing 400-1,000 kg (880-2,200lb)
• A large and mature males can grow up to 6 m (20ft) in length and weight more than 1,000 kg (2,200lb)– The largest male was 7.1 m (23ft) but
now it becomes rare to find– The largest female was 4.2 m (14ft)
Reproduction• Saltwater crocodile mate in the
wet season– That’s when the water levels
become really high– In between September and October,
the male and female start mating– In between November and March,
the female start lays eggs
Reproduction• The female must choose the
nesting site so the parents can protect the nesting
• The nest is covering of mud and vegetation– Usually measuring 175 cm (69in)
long and 53 cm (21in) high– About 40 to 60 eggs but sometime
it can happen to have 90 eggs!– The egg size is about average 8 by
5 cm (3.1 by 2.0in) and weigh 113 g (4.0oz)
Reproduction• Female crocodile protects the
nest for 80 to 98 days• BUT… when the water become
really high due to flooding and it can happening to predation
• As in all crocodilians, sex of the hatchling is determined by temperature–With low temperatures producing
females–With high temperatures producing
males
Food preferences• The saltwater crocodile is a top level of
predator that can take any animals that enters its territory, either in the water or on land
• They are not picky eaters but are not voracious eaters as they are able to survive on relatively little food for a long period of time
• May take animals of almost any variety as its becomes available to them and due to the big power, aggression and size of the species
• Hatchlings are restricted to feeding on smaller animals such as small fish, frogs, bugs and etc…
What kind of foods they like to eat?
Fresh/saltwater fish
many of amphibians
crustaceans
molluscs
large gastropods
large cephalopods
What kind of foods they like to eat?
birds
greater mouse deer
hog deer
porcupine
fishing cat
Too many list for animals including reptiles and sea-animals in the ocean!
Habitat• Saltwater crocodiles normally spend the tropical wet season in freshwater swamps and rivers, moving downstream to brackish water in the dry season and sometime traveling far out to sea
Behavior• Saltwater crocodiles have a strong type of behavior to treat humans in their territory as prey, and have a long history of attacking humans who cross into their territory• Given their power, size, and speed, survival of a direct predatory attack is unlikely if the crocodile is able to make contact
