Principal, Shirebrook Academy
Dear Parents and Carers
I hope you enjoy reading all about all the exciting events that have been a happening at Shirebrook Academy over the past few months. I have thoroughly enjoyed my first few months as Principal and have been made to feel very welcome by staff, students and parents alike.
A lot of people say there is a fantastic atmosphere at Shirebrook and sometimes comment that the building must really help to create that. However, it is clear to me that it is the people inside the building, staff and students alike, whose hard work, determination, positivity and good humour makes Shirebrook Academy a really special place. This newsletter celebrates all of those wonderful people and salutes their hard work and talent. Don’t forget to follow us on twitter @shireacademy or look on our web site for news as it happens.
Of course, we are always looking at ways in which we can improve as a school to make sure your children get the best possible start in life and you will start to notice some minor changes during the course of the year. Your thoughts on any changes we introduce are most welcome, as are any ideas you have for how we can improve the school and how we can do even more in support of the local community.
ISSUE 13
Dayle Green, Education & Engagement Manager at
Harley Gallery, organised for Shirebrook Academy
GCSE students to have the opportunity to create wire
sculptures based around the theme of nature, with
artist Laura Baxter. This year long transition project with
Model Primary School, involved a visit to Chatsworth
gardens in the autumn, where Academy students
assisted junior school children to research nature in
the grounds on a very cold wet day. Whilst making
various small sculptures using mainly wire, students
learned forming, annealing, bending and soldering
processes. They all planned and made model birds
and nests, adding other materials as appropriate.
Some also visited Sheffield’s Millennium Gallery to view
artwork of birds. In addition, some of next year’s GCSE
photography group paid a visit to Model Primary
to make a photo shoot story book for Harley
Gallery of the children making their plywood and
wire models of birds. The models and final
sculptures have been fixed to wood and
displayed on the walls and hung in the trees. A
Shirebrook Academy branch has been installed
in the courtyard, and the other two for us to
display here in the Academy. The project
provided an insight into the way galleries and
artists work, how exhibitions are organised and
given primary and secondary school students
opportunities to link. The result sees the new
courtyard at Model Primary with some exciting
permanent sculptures made by the students.
Your child’s health and welfare is
important. If your child has a
medical condition or need we must
be made aware of this. Please make
sure you have informed the
Academy about any medical issues
concerning your child.

GCSE Geography students embarked on
a field trip to Hucknall last month. The trip was aimed
at investigating the planning issue underway to
pedestrianize Hucknall high street. Despite having to
carry out data collection methods in the typical
British weather the students were well behaved
and returned to school able to write up their
findings having gained a more accurate
picture of the issue to be studied.
“After a long drive in Friday night traffic, we
eventually arrived in Wales at the Caban Cysgu.
After an evening of food and playing cards an
early night was needed ready for a long day
ahead. Saturday morning was here and no rain!
Everyone got themselves ready for the day and
off we went. We were met with a BIG hill, each
student taking it in turns to lead a leg and
hopefully not get the group lost. After lunch the
group split into 2, each group working on a
different navigational skill. Later that day when
we arrived back at the centre we were thankful
for a warm cup of tea and a break from the cold
and wind and a warm shower was definitely
needed. Food consisted of a well-deserved pizza
and chips, lovely! The third day there was only a
small walk, but beautiful scenery to be seen,
there was not one person who was not impressed
by the scenery. All students learnt new skills and
improved existing skills a big well done to all.”

ADAM STACEY –
Head Boy
When Mr Stafford announced I was
Head Boy I felt a rush of excitement
that a lot of opportunities would
come up in my school education. In
addition I found that the role of Head
Boy came with a huge amount of
responsibility and challenges which I
am ready to undertake.
Some of the challenges include
delivering assemblies to other years
and going to conferences, like a
recent trip to Landau Forte College
where we talked about the future of
education and what benefits it might
hold. Overall, I am thoroughly looking
forward to spending my last year at
Shirebrook Academy as Head Boy.
ALYSIA MIDDLETON –
Head Girl
When I became Head Girl I was very
happy and proud of this achievement. I
am very grateful for this opportunity as
I know many people wanted the role.
As Head Girl I will take into
consideration other students thoughts
and ideas and will work with students
not only from Shirebrook Academy but
also from Stubbin Wood Primary and
Secondary school too.
So far we have done assemblies and
meetings for other students and we
have greeted many visitors into the
Academy.
Our Ambassador team have done a
great job so far raising money for our
prom but we still need lots of work
doing and every idea will be taken into
account.
U13 Girls win their way to
the One Call stadium!
Shirebrook Blue team Ellie May Walton,
Kenzie Joachim,
Reanna Davies,
Libby Richardson,
Katie Heavisides
Sharna Graves,
Mya Owens,
Lauren Hughes.
On Friday 9th October Miss Musgrove and
Miss Newton took two U13 girls football
teams to a local 6 a side football tournament
at MTFC training ground. We were able to
take two teams as a result of the fantastic
interest in Y7 and Y8 girls’ football this
year- with some very talented girls
joining us at the Academy.
The tournament was a fantastic
opportunity for the girls to gain
some match time and followed
nicely after the Y7 girl’s district
success a couple weeks previous.
In total, 7 teams from the Mansfield area
were part of the tournament and it was
great to see so many girls getting involved in
a week that was dedicated to girls football
following the success of the England
Women’s team who came 3rd in the 2015
Women’s world cup in Canada. This
tournament was one of many taking place
across all areas of the UK on the day, with
winners of each area meeting in the next
stage at the Regional finals. The winners of
the regional finals then go on to compete in
the National finals, held at Wembley
Stadium.
Upon arrival, both teams were very excited
and eager to impress and after a few photo
opportunities in front of the One Call
stadium, the competition was underway.
Both teams started extremely well winning their first two
games. It was then time for a break before Shirebrook
White were to play Shirebrook Blue- This sparked some
competition amongst the girls and both Miss Musgrove
and Miss Newton were neutral during this game, remaining
silent on the side line. After eight competitive minutes it
was the white team who were victorious winning 4-0.
Unfortunately, I think this knocked the Blue team’s
confidence as they then went on to win one and
lose their final two games. On the other hand,
the White team were unstoppable, playing
some great football and winning their
remaining three games, resulting in
six wins from six, with 13 goals scored
and zero conceded- a fantastic
achievement. This resulted in the
white team being crowned
winners of the tournament!
As a result, Shirebrook White
team will now go on to face
Joseph Whittaker A team
(who came a close second) in
the area final which will take
place at the one call stadium as
part of the half time show of the
Mansfield Town FC v Hartlepool
United FC league 2 match on
Saturday 21st November, 2015,
where they will play in front of
thousands of football fans.
This is a fantastic opportunity
for the girls who will all be
given a chance to play inside
a 10,000 capacity stadium
on a professional football
pitch. All the girls will be
given a free ticket for the
match and I am sure it
will be a great day out.

“This equipment will help to ensure that our pupils can continue to enjoy sport and we are very grateful to Sports Direct for their kind donation.”
Leon Turnbull, Head of People at Sports Direct, said: “We recognise that we are a part of the community in Shirebrook and we wanted to give something back.
“I went to the Academy when it was still Shirebrook School and so did many of our workers, so it’s good to be able to help them out in this way.”
Shirebrook pupils get sporting boost with new equipment
Pupils at Shirebrook Academy walked away with brand new rackets, balls, shirts and bats when they were given bagfuls of free sports equipment.
The students picked up the goodies after they were donated by retail giant Sports Direct, which is based in the town.
The Academy has a large and varied sports programme and boasts state-of-the-art facilities, which include a 3-G pitch, which are also used in the evenings and on weekends by a host of clubs and sports organisations including Shirebrook Rangers and Shirebrook Gymnastic Club.
The job of co-ordinating the out-of-hours use is handled by a company called Facilities for All, who put Sports Direct in touch with the Academy after the retailer contacted it to offer to donate equipment to a local school.
Andy Gilbert, Vice Principal at the Academy, said: “Our rackets and footballs have a lot of use at school and it’s inevitable that there are going to be breakages and punctures along the way, so we are constantly having to replace them.

With 2016 fast approaching, the departure date for
our intrepid Namibia travellers will be here in no time
at all. Headed up by Mr Edwards the students have
been busy on their fundraising quest. Since the start
of the new academic year, students have undertaken
various activities including bag packs, a Halloween
bake sale, they delivered an assembly at Park Road
Primary School and have been selling Rotary Club
raffle tickets and handmade Christmas cards. On
their way to the target of £9,000 they have just
passed the £6,000 mark which portrays their
incredible effort.
Further events lined up before Christmas include a
stall at our Winter Wonderland event on December
5th and a bag pack at Tesco on 16th December. Why
not save the dates and come along, throw some
support their way and bag some festive treats too.

at Chatsworth House.
For several years now, ‘Discovery Days’ have provided students with the opportunity to spend a day discovering some of the treasures that belong to the Duke of Devonshire at his Chatsworth Estate. The Discovery Day event starts in meeting with The Duke and some of his collections team, along with lecturers from Leeds University, representatives from Roche Courte, Cambridge University and this year, curator of Derby Art Gallery and Museum.
Students from Shirebrook Academy worked with representative students from Eckington School, Derby High, Pingle School, and Sheffield High. Adam, Libby and Matthew volunteered to interview the Duke in respect of the specific artwork that they were researching. All three students conducted excellent interviews which were well received by the Duke.
Each group then presented their information in the form of a speech/ presentation, all students had to contribute and our representatives made very confident speeches.
Again a wonderful day of discovery and communication and we were very proud of our students conduct and performance.

As part of the Y7 Street Curriculum students
recently spent the day exploring Rufford Country
Park. The weather held out and everyone had a
great day.
As part of the 14-18 Centenary Commemorations students from
Shirebrook Academy went on a tour of the Battlefield of
Flanders and the Somme with the Royal British Legion. Students
were shown some of the 271 graveyards in the Somme area,
including the Thiepval Memorial where names of 72 000
soldiers who lost their lives but were never found are
immortalised. The Lochnagar Crater is an example of the
destruction of mines along the front line of the Somme and
measure 90 metres wide and 30 metres deep, and emphasises
to visitors the level of destruction and death during the fighting.
One of the most memorial moments was at the Menin Gate and
listening to the ‘Last Post’ where as part of the centenary every
evening they are reading the story of one of the fallen. On our
evening there it was a member of the Grenadier Guards and the
family were invited to lay a wreath at the memorial.
For the school the best moment was
visiting Talbot House a place of respite for
250,000 English soldiers during World War
1 where tea and cake, the classic English
staple, were in abundance and soldiers
could sing along to the piano and seek
guidance form the Chaplain. Always willing
to experience new things, students drank
tea and ate the cake willingly supplied by
the volunteer and students encouraged by
the warm and welcoming atmosphere also
sat at the piano in the parlour and played,
just as soldiers of World War 1 had.
Shirebrook Academy is committed to allowing every student to commemorate the centenary 14-18 by sharing reflections on the fallen and the sacrifice of the soldiers by writing their thoughts on poppies which are then displayed in the academy.
On Remembrance, time for reflection was given to both staff and students to emphasise the importance of remembering the sacrifices of others. In the staffroom in briefing the Head of Humanities shared thoughts from the recent trip to Belgium. In particular how at Talbot House the staff and students let it live again when students played the piano that soldiers of World War I had sat at in the drawing room of the house in Flanders, Belgium, one of the students recital was shared with staff. All staff were then encouraged to stand silently at 11 am and reminded how the positive influence of staff would lead our students to also be respectful and mark the moment.
At 11am, the school fell silent as gunfire and the over the top whistle was heard throughout the school. Students stood respectfully through the Last Post, two minutes silence and then the Revielle.
To ensure that ‘Sons of Shirebrook’ are remembered amongst the community there was a display in the Atrium of names of the fallen, where they fell and where they are commemorated for all students to reflect on.
From the recent Battlefields trip students in Year 9 have produced poetry that highlights a deeper understanding of the experience and how it should be commemorated.

Flynn Dodsworth and Connor Kirk
Aspire sixth form students visited local employer MSE Hiller as part of the 'Made in Chesterfield' campaign to promote manufacturing businesses in North Derbyshire. MSE Hiller make and service centrifuges for industries around the world from their headquarters in Bolsover. The visit was a great opportunity to see how Science A Levels could be applied in the workplace. Students learnt about laboratory testing processes, hydraulics, balance testing equipment, and had a go at welding - not as easy as it looks!
Further visits to other employers will be taking place in the coming weeks.

Here is what they had to say;
Ellie McBroom – RUNNER UP
The design I chose features a ladder to show that no matter
where you are in life you can climb to the top to achieve your goal.
My design also shows two people running for the finish line to
show that everyone can be a winner if they put in the hard work
and effort. The scroll to me is my ultimate goal because when you
stand on the podium and its placed in your hands you know all your
hard work, effort and dedication to learning has finally paid off. I
included ‘your learning your future’ because it’s the Shirebrook
Academy motto.
High Achievers means a lot to me because it shows that all the hard
work I put in during primary school has been worth it.
Being part of high achievers helps because it pushes
me and it also takes me out of my comfort zone.
My future aspirations are to become an ambassador for the
Academy, complete school with grade A’s and B’s, attend university
and become a secondary PE teacher or primary school teacher.
Ben Clarke – RUNNER UP
I chose this design because it shows the hard work and effort high
achievers put into school life.
High Achievers is special to me because it gives me motivation for
school life and I can talk to others about different situations.
High Achievers help me progress in my mentality
and my mind-set growth. I can then get
better levels and have a better job and
lifestyle in older life.
When I am older, I do not know
what I would like to be so I work
hard in all subjects so I can
have the best job.
Charlie Smyth
For the design, I used the colour of the
academy, blue and I also incorporated my
favourite colour of orange. I used purple to
represent High Achievers.
For me High Achievers is a way to spend a
lesson with people of the same ability as
me with similar aspirations.
We learn about pathways to higher
education and take visits to universities to
get a better grasp of what higher education
is like. High Achievers helps us see how we
can make our futures better.
My future aspirations are to achieve A’s in
my GCSE’s, A Levels in Engineering, Maths
and Physics and then go on to university
and take a degree in Engineering Design.
Our winners were asked four key questions about their designs.
Why did you chose this design?
What does High Achievers mean to you?
How does high Achievers help you?
What are your future aspirations?

You may be aware that last spring the decision was taken to change
our catering contractors as the existing contract with Derbyshire County Council
was due to expire. Following a competitive tender process, that involved a student panel from both
Shirebrook Academy and Stubbin Wood, the governors of both schools unanimously approved Churchill’s as the
new caterers for both schools from September 1st 2015.
There have been some teething problems with the changeover to Churchill’s and at times during the first half term
the food offer has not been of an acceptable standard.
Please be assured that we are working closely with Churchill’s senior management team to resolve these issues so
that our young people are offered the nutritious, healthy and appetising food that they need and deserve.
Churchill’s are a large, national company with a good reputation and they are as determined as we are to make
sure that the food offer is top quality. I am confident that with the changes they have already
started to introduce they we will be able to deliver the standard we expect but I
know how important this is for our students and families and we
will not accept poor standards.

At the beginning of the term Shirebrook Academy hosted a series of community workshops delivered by the world
famous Black Dyke Brass Band under the direction of their
conductor Professor Nicholas Childs. The workshops focussed of
instrumental technique and ensemble performance and
culminated in a performance in the evening at Shirebrook Leisure
Centre featuring Black Dyke playing alongside the students.
The event was the first in a series of events and workshops with
Shirebrook Academy and Black Dyke which will continue in
January where Professor Childs will be leading our very own
Academy Wind Band in rehearsal and ending in a very exciting
Concert scheduled for 15th October 2016 which will feature
Black Dyke performing alongside our Wind Band and Shirebrook Unison Band.
This term we say goodbye to Mrs Ward as she embarks on a new journey of
parenthood.
Mrs Ward who is our Vice Principal and leader of our Teaching School will be
