Field trips
can enhance
and expand
upon the
materials that you
are teaching in class,
but there are only so
many opportunities
to get outside of the
classroom during the
school year. When you
do choose a location
for a field trip, you
want to make the
most of it.
Choosing the
Saskatchewan Science
Centre for your field
trip is one of the best
ways to do that. With
more than 150 hands-
on exhibits to explore,
a large variety of
workshops to take part
in, and educational
IMAX films, it’s easy
to tie your lesson
plan into a fun and
productive field trip.
Each of our workshops is designed for a specific grade level to work with the curriculum that you are teaching in your class. Information about inquiry learning activities is provided so that you can plan lessons around the things your students experience at the Science Centre, and the visiting exhibitions and IMAX films are presented with Educator Guides to help take the load off of planning pre and post field trip activities.
Start the day right at 9:15! A quick check-in, and by 9:30 one of our science educators is taking your class to their workshop location. Maybe it’s Star Trip – where our inflatable digital planetarium takes students on a visual journey out into the universe – followed by some exploration time on the exhibit floor! Promote inquiry learning and use the scavenger hunts or activity sheets available on our website to help their fun time be productive. This time could also include watching one of our hourly stage show demonstrations on topics including cryogenics, gravity, air pressure, animals, and even fire!
Enjoy lunch on site at noon, which can be eaten out in beautiful Wascana Park if the weather permits. Then, at 1:00, watch an IMAX documentary on our five story screen with intense 3D images and more than 10,000 watts of surround sound to keep your students glued to their seats. By 1:45, you’re back on the way to your bus and back to school with plenty of time to spare.
Of course, that’s just one way to experience the Science Centre with your class! Whether you would like a full-day or half-day experience, we can help you plan it. Our full list of workshops, IMAX films, and teacher resources are available on our website, and as part of our Beyond the Classroom Teacher Planning Guide.
If you’re too far away from Regina to visit us, let us come to you with our Go! Science Outreach team. A full day of programming can be brought right to your school, with hands-on, grade-appropriate workshops and stage shows that can bring your whole school together for some exciting science demonstrations!
Get beyond the classroom this year and ignite the scientific curiosity of your class at the Saskatchewan Science Centre! Real science. Real fun. Visit sasksciencecentre.com for more information.

Meet Saskatchewan’s Past, in Person
Government House, a National Historic Site and Provincial Heritage Property, is full of history. The Lieutenant Governor of the Northwest Territories once lived in the grand, sprawling
building. Although the property, built in 1891, is no longer a home, it still contains the working offices of the current Lieutenant Governor. It has hosted a variety of important individuals over the years, from Canadian premiers to international diplomats to members of the royal family.
But the historic space is more than a house for VIPs, it’s a house for the public—including teachers and students. Through innovative exhibits and educational programming, it brings the past to life.
Visitor Experience Hosts in period costumes provide tours and activities in both official languages.
Until September 20th, explore the feature exhibit celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Canadian flag. Students can discover how the flag was created, share a personal Canadian story in the video booth and design a unique flag to hang up in the exhibit.
Teachers, bring your students on a tour of the Amédée Forget Museum, independently or with the help of a host. The museum recreates life at Government House at the turn of the 20th century. (And Jocko, a plush Capuchin monkey that looks just like the one Mr. Forget and his wife once owned, is always hidden somewhere in the museum. The Forgets didn’t have any children, but they had Jocko, and they let him roam freely throughout the house. Sometimes he jumped in people’s hair and stole toupees).
Younger students can dress up in Victorian clothing inside the J.E.N Wiebe Interpretive Centre, or play in the Once Upon a Time Room, a space filled with books, toys, games and activity stations.
In the spring and early fall, experience the Edwardian Gardens, a space more than eight acres in size that blooms with lilies, roses and irises. Classes can either stroll through the grounds to observe the plant life, or learn about the gardens’ historical significance by geocaching, a modern-day scavenger hunt using GPS devices.
The Christmas season at Government is one of the most popular times of year to visit. The entire house is trimmed with Christmas trees, mistletoe and hundreds of poinsettias. Christmas- themed educational programs are offered from the middle of November until the end of December. (It’s best to book early, since these are some of our most popular programs!)
Located at 4607 Dewdney Avenue, Government
House is open six days a week for most of the year, from Tuesday until Sunday, 9 a.m. until 4 p.m., Labour Day until Victoria Day. During the summer, Government House is open seven days a week, from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Admission is free. Donations are encouraged. Complimentary
Wi-Fi is available on site. For more information, visit governmenthouse.gov.sk.ca or call 306-787-5773. To stay up-to-date on all Government House events and activities, follow us on Twitter (@Govt_House) or like us on Facebook (/governmenthouse).

From the grandest home in the Northwest Territories to a rooming house for wounded veterans, Government House is filled with 124 years of stories to share.

The Royal Sasktatchewan Museum has dedicated 109 years to shedding light on the history and mysteries of our world.
Ignite their imagination with our exhibits, programs and interactive play space.
All it takes is a tiny spark…
Twice the Fun—Two Locations, One Great MuseumRoyal Saskatchewan Museum
The Royal Saskatchewan Museum (RSM), the only museum in Saskatchewan with a royal designation and the oldest provincial museum in western Canada, offers educational programming for students of all ages, from pre-Kindergarten until Grade 12.
The RSM’s recently revitalized temporary exhibit space currently houses “Insects, Flowers and Food” an exhibit that explores the importance of pollinators and the history of pollination. It will be up until early fall 2015.
Omaciw, an enormous marine reptile skeleton that was discovered in Saskatchewan, will also remain displayed in the space until the fall of 2015. The 72-million-year-old Tylosaurus helps illustrate ancient Saskatchewan— its environment and the creatures that lived there.
In November 2015, Chief Pasqua’s Pictograph Exhibit will be launched in the new exhibit space. The pictograph is a visual representation of the treaty negotiations—actual small pictures drawn by Chief Pasqua, one of the First Nations’ chiefs that signed the Treaty. The pictures interpret what was promised in Treaty 4 and are 130 years old. This is the only known pictograph to portray First Nations accounts during the times of treaty-making. It will be up until May 2016. RSM interpreters will lead educational programs that highlight First Nations and treaty history in Saskatchewan. Teachers can find information on programs, including booking forms, at royalsaskmuseum.ca/education/royal-saskatchewan-museum
A variety of new programs that relate to the areas of Earth and Life Sciences will also kick off in November 2015. Programs strive to align with the Saskatchewan curriculum and are geared toward students in Grades 4-8.
Teachers are welcome to lead students through the galleries on their own. Just call 306-787-2815 or email [email protected] to give staff a heads up.
Tours and programs are free. Donations are encouraged, but not required. A suggested donation is $2 per student. Proceeds help support the RSM’s programs, exhibits and services. The museum, located at 2445 Albert Street in Regina, is open daily from 9:30 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. For more details on happenings at the RSM (and the T.rex Discovery Centre), visit Facebook (/Royal.Saskatchewan.Museum), Twitter (@royalsaskmuseum), and Instagram (/royalsaskmuseum).
T.rex Discovery Centre
The T. rex Discovery Centre in Eastend, home to one of the largest and most complete Tyrannosaurus rex skeletons in the world, is an important research centre for some of Canada’s top geologists and palaeontologists.
The Centre is located in the heart of Saskatchewan dinosaur country, and just a short drive from beautiful Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park, the highest point between Newfoundland and the Rocky Mountains.
Earth Science 30 teachers may want to embark on a field trip to Eastend for a tour of the Centre. Students will learn about the significant dinosaur fossils discovered in the area—including Scotty, of course. They will also get a glimpse into the lives of Saskatchewan palaeontologists: how they discover and excavate fossils, what they do to prepare them and how they study them.
A variety of educational programs are available in May and June. Donations of $2 per student are encouraged to help support the centre’s programs and services. For more information, visit royalsaskmuseum.ca/education/trex-discovery-centre. To book a program or tour, email [email protected]. Teachers can also guide students through the centre on their own. Located at #1 T.rex Drive, the T.rex Discovery Centre is open daily from 10:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m., Victoria Day weekend until Labour Day.

Come ride the rails like your ancestors did to settle the vast prairies. Travel through time,
sharing history from the early construction of the railways to the creation of the grain elevators. The elevator we visit was built in 1922 and has seen grain delivered by horse and wagon and by the larger 1970s grain truck. Come see and experience what a wooden grain elevator did for the prairies by helping get the local crops to market. Did you know that the grain evaluator did more than just buy the farmers grain? You could also buy your coal there for those long winter nights.
Southern Prairie Railway is also open to specialized charters. In 2012, the train was chartered as one of the graduation events for the end of the year. Charters are customized to the requirements of the group.
Special school rates available. Rides available on weekdays. All rides must be prearranged.

See Something To Think About At Your Public Art Gallery...
Bring your students
to a public art
gallery for a fun and
interesting field trip.
Have a guided tour.
Meet with a curator
and maybe some
artists. Do a studio
activity that relates
to the exhibition.
Bring your students to a public art gallery for experiential learning in visual thinking. Practicing visual thinking
improves sensibility, mental agility and capacity. Visual thinking is essential to creative thinking and systems thinking.
Visiting a public art gallery or any museum is important to developing cultural literacy. Cultural literacy is essential to social development and the student’s engagement with community. Visual thinking and cultural literacy are important in this day and age for media savvy. Students and everyone need to evaluate the media they are exposed to. It is important to their quality of life and even their safety.
Public art galleries and museums are responsible to the public and are professional and conscious of the art they are selecting and providing access to. Artistic expression will share abstracted visual experiences, it will share stories from life, and it will address issues and often challenge traditional modes of thought. Human and natural history, environment, science, politics, and social justice are all looked at in the visual arts.
In every case, in every show, art will give the viewer – the learner something substantial and meaningful to think about. Visit a public art gallery – bring your students.

• The Passage to Fortune tells the story of the chinese immigrants’ journey into canada in the late 1800s. The students learn about the head tax, the chinese Immigration Act and how these brave men helped build the cPR. It deals with their ultimate survival despite racism and hatred they suffered on a daily basis.
• The Chicago Connection offers a glimpse into the days of prohibition, bootlegging and gangsters in the 1920s right here in Moose Jaw. Moose Jaw at the time was rife with political corruption and bad behavior by many in power. The students learn about their country’s history and the way things were in the Roaring twenties.
We offer packages to all teachers so their students can learn about cana-dian history in a unique and memo-rable way. It’s a great way to supple-ment what is being taught in your classrooms.

Death Valley PaintballDeath Valley Paintball is located less than an hour northwest of Regina. With mature, skilled officials, it is an excellent choice to take your school students. Paintball is a fun way to learn some of the skills of real life: leadership, teamwork, teambuilding and judge-ment – also, the realization that there are consequences for mistakes or not following direction. It also creates a stronger bond between teachers and students when teachers get involved in the games.
With quite a few courses and different scenarios to choose from, we should have something for everyone!

CLAYBANK BRICK PLANT NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE
radled in the hills of southern Saskatchewan there exists a splendid example of early 20th century industrialism.
our school group will experience, first-hand, a labour-intensive industrial operation just as it existed from 1912 to 1930. The Claybank Brick Plant is a tribute to the
ingenuity and perseverance of Saskatchewan’s early settlers. Long before the brick plant existed, the clay resources found here were utilized by our First Nations peoples. Touring the site and hiking the Massold Clay Canyons facilitates a greater sense of pride in both our industrial and First Nations heritage.
Face brick manufactured at the brick plant graces the facades of many prestigious buildings in Canada, such as the Chateau Frontenac in Quebec City.
Saskatchewan’s beautiful Gravelbourg Cathedral is faced entirely with Claybank brick, as are a number of court houses and other public buildings across our province.
The rare fire brick produced here lined the fire boxes of the CN and CP steam locomotives that brought our prairie settlers west; and it lined the boilers of the Corvette Destroyer warships in World War II. The rare fire brick was also used in the construction of the rocket launch pads at Cape Canaveral for the moon shots in the 1970s. The brick plant constitutes one of the best-preserved examples of early 20th century industrial activity in North America.

A great way to spend the day!
More than Bricks and Mortar
Prairie Pies & Brick Plant Tour: Each participant will experience what it was like to work in the historic “bunkhouse kitchen” while being guided through the process of making a four-inch Saskatoon berry pie from scratch. There is an interesting connection between baking pies and firing bricks! While the pies bake,
the group takes a tour of the brick making process in order to find similarities and appreciate both
methods of production. The pies that the participants prepare will be package
for take home.
Program Cost: $7 per child
SaskTel Ancient Pottery & Brick Plant Tour:
The clay deposits located in the Massold Clay Canyons adjacent to the
brick plant have a long history. This program facilitates the appreciation
and better understanding of two differing cultures. The participants will make their own clay item, the old way,
using round rocks as tools to grind clay and their hands to fashion a crude
pot, coil works bowl, toy or tool, like the First Nations people did long ago.
The item will be packaged for take home. This program also includes
a tour of the brick plant and the brick-making process in order to find similarities and
appreciate both methods of clay production.
Program Cost: $7 per child
Eco-Education Program & optional Brick Plant Tour:This thought-provoking program allows children to look at their heritage and the environment in a different way, and it encourages them to think about their own accountability in those areas. Each five- to 10-person group is supplied with a digital camera, a walkie-talkie for communication with other groups, and a Massold Clay Canyons map for navigation, with an objective to experience as much of the clay canyons as possible, be it flora, fauna, geology, historic features or to just get out there and have fun. After the adventure, the digital photos will be organized and uploaded to an online album for participant sharing.
Program Cost: $7 per child

One of the two facets of the jewel of the City of Melfort, the Northern Lights Palace is located at 110 MacLeod Avenue West. This beautiful facility houses our arena and pool. It has played host to such major events as the Royal Bank Cup and the Men’s Provincial Curling Championships, as well as many concerts and other events.
The arena has ice from August to April and is home to the SJHL Melfort Mustangs. During the summer months, it is home to Melfort Lacrosse. The Palace is available year round for concerts, cabarets, trade shows, craft shows and many other functions. With seating for 1,807 for arena events and over 2,400 for concerts, this facility can host many of the first class events in the province! The arena can be used for major functions such as concerts and trade shows. We have an insulated ice deck that can be put in place to allow large events to take place during the winter months when the Palace has ice. The layout of the arena includes numerous dressing rooms as well as a skater’s lounge. The other features of this arena include a box office and full concessions services located in the main lobby.
The leisure pool has a wave generator, waterslide, hot tub, spray bar, dry sauna, and a zero depth entrance. The pool is open year round offering swimming lessons, Aquafitness, lane swimming, family swimming, public swimming and birthday parties. The only indoor wave pool in northeast Saskatchewan a year round splash and fun destination. Plan a visit while you’re in the area. It’s an attraction not to be missed! We welcome everyone to have a blast at the palace all to themselves. Rent the entire pool for one, two, three, or more hours. We supply the opportunities for a good time, it’s up to you to bring all your friends. Schools from all corners of the province regularly book rental times during school hours. Sports club wind-ups and seasonal parties book weekend and evening times. Everyone is welcome to book a rental time at the pool. Most rentals have between 30 & 140 swimmers. Our max capacity at the pool is 278 swimmers, but that is dependent on the number of guards we have at the time. During a rental you have the pool to yourself. The wave pool, waterslide, hot tub, and sauna are yours for that time.
Come and take a look at our facility and “Play Melfort”.

THE GRAND STORY of the settlement of the West, and the conflict that accompanied it, echoes across the prairies, with tales of the Métis leaders; Louis Riel and
Gabriel Dumont; Cree Chiefs Poundmaker and Big Bear; Sam Steele of the NWMP and Major General Frederick Middleton. Travel the Trails of 1885 and experience the events, sites and stories that helped form our country.
Begin your quest in Winnipeg, Manitoba, where you can visit the St. Boniface Museum, with its amazing collection of Métis artifacts and stories, as well as the birthplace and gravesite of Louis Riel. Follow the Métis frontier and travel west across the prairies to the South Saskatchewan River. Today, the city of Saskatoon makes a convenient starting point for the rest of your exploration.
Valleys of the Saskatchewan
About 70 km north of Saskatoon, experience Métis culture and heritage at Batoche National Historic Site 1 . Learn more about this historic battle by exploring the Government militia trenches, Métis rifle pits, and battlefield. Along with the restored church and rectory, the Visitor Reception Centre has extensive exhibits, audio-visual presentation, and programming to bring the Métis people’s story to life. In the cemetery, a large river stone indicates where Gabriel Dumont is buried overlooking the beautiful riverbank.
A short distance south of Batoche, is the Battle of Tourond’s Coulee/ FishCreek National Historic Site, where the first military engagement between the Métis and government forces took place. On the battlefield, view the silhouettes of government militia exchanging fire across Fish Creek withMétis and First Nations sharpshooters. North of Batoche, take the ferry across the river to scenic St. Laurent, an early Métis settlement and home of Our Lady of Lourdes Shrine which hosts an annual religious pilgrimage.
Back on Hwy 11, the Duck Lake Regional Interpretive Centre tells the 1885 story from three perspectives: settlers, First Nations, and the Métis. For expansive views of the area, climb the centres 24-metre tower. Explore the town’s colorful murals depicting local history, and visit the First Shots Cairn, where a skirmish between the NWMP and Métis fighters resulted in the first shots of the conflict. To the west, on Hwy 212, Fort Carlton Provincial Park 2 recreates the golden era of the fur trade, but some of its exhibits deal withthe NWMP’s hurried evacuation of the post after the battle at Duck Lake, and the resulting destruction of the fort by fire.
Battle River Country
Northwest of Saskatoon, at the scenic confluence of the Battle and North Saskatchewan Rivers, the twin communities of North Battleford and Battleford (once the seat of the North West Territorial government) are rich in history. At Fort Battleford National Historic Site 4 , learn about life as a Mountie, and hear the stories of Chief Poundmaker and the settlers during those eventful days. Follow the story by traveling west of the Battlefords to Cut Knife and visit the Chief Poundmaker Historical Centre and the Battle ofPoundmaker Hill National Historic Site 3 , on the Poundmaker Cree Nation.
The North West Frontier
North of Lloydminster, discover the fascinating story of Chief Big Bear and his clash with government forces. At Frog Lake National Historic Site in Alberta, about an hour from the city, grave markers are a grim reminder of the Frog Lake Massacre.
Back in Saskatchewan, Fort Pitt Provincial Historic Park tells of the misunderstanding that resulted in the killing of an NWMP scout by the Cree, and the subsequent departure of the Mounties and the burning of the fort. The story continues at Frenchman Butte National Historic Site, to the east, where Cree rifle pits and the government artillery site are reminders of the difficulties Canadian militia had when they responded to the Frog Lake Massacre by attacking the Cree’s more strategic location.
There are many more stories of the 1885 North West Resistance, and its aftermath, told at other sites and museums in Saskatchewan, Alberta, and Manitoba: at Humboldt, Sask., the site of the original Humboldt Telegraph Station and military camp; at Fort Edmonton (on their ‘1885 Street’), in the Sir Samuel Steele Collection at the University of Alberta, through exhibits at Fort Calgary and Calgary’s Glenbow Museum, and at the RCMP Heritage Centre in Regina. Visit them and experience the history of the last true west!

SASKATCHEWAN LEGISLATIVE BUILDING
It’s never too soon for students to learn about
DEMOCRACY!
In addition to our programming, half-hour building tours are available year-round.
For more information, visit our website, www.legassembly.sk.ca.
To book a school tour, please call 306-787-5358.
L ooking for ways to teach your students about government? There’s no better way than to have them visit the Legislative Building for a tour, sit in on Questions Period, and meet their MLA (Member of the Legislative Assembly). The Legislative Building is host to thousands of students every year. Our educational tours and support material correspond to the grades 4 and 8 social studies curricula, but of course any student will benefit from a visit to the Legislative Building! The program is offered in the in spring and fall when the Legislative Assembly is in session. Please allow 2 hours for your visit.
Teachers, let us know if you would like your MLA to expand on any particular topic (ie, Election of an MLA, Role of an MLA, or How Laws are Made. See our website, under About). It’s also a good idea to have your students prepare questions to ask their MLA. What better way to find out more about parliamentary democracy? As for the tour of the Legislative Building, it too tells a fascinating story! Students will learn all kinds of interesting facts, many that they will never forget. For example, did you know that the legislative building was supposed to be faced with red brick? And, do you know why there is a lantern on the top of our Legislative Building?
Guess what? We’ll soon have a brand new shiny dome! Our 100-year old roof was leaking, so major repairs are under way, and will be completed at the end of the year. Did you know, copper is shiny when it’s new, and the colour starts to change in about a year? There is an interesting display of the project, including pieces of the actual dome, in our Cumberland Gallery. If you would like to do an outdoor activity, older students can enjoy our self-guided walking tour that takes them to points of interest near the building, while younger ones can enjoy our scavenger hunt. Our puppet theatre, featuring real characters that your students will meet in the Chamber – the Speaker, the Sergeant-at-Arms, and the Clerk of the House – is suitable for primary students.
