ABOUT THE WEBINARThe four-day webinar aims to sensitise the legalfraternity about the challenges posed by DigitalSequence Information on Biodiversity law. DigitalSequence Information (DSI), though there is nouniversally accepted definition, refers to the digitalinformation on the sequence order of subunits ofmolecules extracted from organisms. It includesdigital biological data such as genetic information, bio information, natural information, sequenceinformation, genetic sequence data, nucleotidesequence data or genetic resources in silico.

The rapid growth in digital genetic resources andadvances in synthetic biology and gene editingtoday has resulted in a situation where theutilization and exploitation of genetic and otherinformation are possible without physicallyaccessing the biological material. It creates multiplechallenges when the data is exploited on acommercial scale. As the information is obtainedfrom a biological material, its utilization andexploitation are governed by the Biodiversity laws.Questions on the model to be followed in accessingof the data, the fair and equitable sharing of thebenefits arising from its commercial exploitation aresome of the concerns which the internationalcommunity is facing today. In the webinar, variouschallenges which the DSI poses to the Biodiversityframework both at the international and nationallevel will be discussed and deliberated upon atlength.
