Finishing off the week was a biannual SHRMSaturday morning Beach Day!This semester, the picnic washeld over at Kailua BeachPark. With the sandwichstation quickly set up, theSHRMies were given thecreative luxury to make lunch
whenever they wanted, and in whatever way they wanted! For example, following in thefootsteps of one of our
veteran members, Michaelstuffed his sandwich with a
whole bag of chips (beforefinishing it off with mustardand mayonnaise). Asdisgusting as that sounds, it
actually was not bad!
Halfway through the day as we were reaching a lull,Kainoa Fong, Director ofStudent Affairs, organized aquick football game that
SATURDAY MORNING
B E A Hinvolved both athletic andunathletic alike. Kainoa ledhis band of ragtag kids againstour SHRM Football StarsJared Kushi and ScottNguyen, but unfortunately, not even his leadership wasenough to conquer these two
juggernauts of the gridiron.
We rounded out the day byrelaxing and watching some ofour bolder members swim outto a nearby island beforecalling it a day!
Overall, the SHRM membersreally enjoyed the day withrelaxation and beachactivities. Most important, bonds were formed betweenthe different individuals whoshare even just a speck ofcommon interest.

After an eventful month ofmock interviews andmidterms, the SHRMies werepretty beat! Thank goodnessfor Spring Break! While manyof us went back home to be
with family and friends, theSHRMies kicked off the
vacation by going to IcePalace! But thats not all, theyramped it up to the next levelby inviting our friends at
AMA, the AmericanMarketing Association, to joinus! Theres little in the worldthat can beat an afternoon ofice-skating with the SHRMies, but theres virtually nothingthat can top a day of glidingthrough Oahus frozen
wonderland with ourSHRMAMAs! Also, as aspecial treat for both old andnew members alike, we weregraced with the presences of
Princess Karen Galano and Adrienne Huang, both of whom were Directors ofCorporate Relations duringtheir tenure in the SHRM
Aloha Chapter; and Landon Wong, the previous Directorof Fundraising.
With the hot sun beatingdown, the SHRMies weremore than eager to jump outonto the ice. They got in,found their seats, plopped onthe skates, and jumped inonto the ice! More veteranskaters leapt onto the ice likebeautiful swans dancingthrough meadows of frozencrystals while our rookiesstruggled just to maintaintheir balance.
With the SHRM legends, ourpresident and SheinaBaybayan, the IBC Senator, took to the rink! Following
close behind were Angel andMichael Hoe, our Director ofCorporate Relation and ITOfficer, who led the SHRMiesonto the ice! However, withinthe first 5 seconds, Michaelfell and took out an AMAmember with him. Luckily itdidnt cause a war!Meanwhile, the Director ofFundraising, Isaac Lui,headed over to the tutorialarea to challenge ourmembers to a race.
With the exception of acouple instances of horriblechafing, fun times were hadall around! It was definitely aday to remember!

SHRM WELLNESS TIPS5 Ways To Build Relationships With
Colleagues Resourced from Careerealism.com by Belen Chacon
Because everyone has their role to play in a company, it is important for everyone to get along not just for the sake of the work environment, but for the sake of the company and its success, too. But how do you build relationships with co-workers to begin with? Here are five ways:
1. Be Honest And Communicate
When it comes to building relationships with your co-workers, be open and honest.Encourage people to be honest with their co-workers about having a social relationship andcommunicate that you want to get to know them better in order to work better as a team. Some people see work as a place to show up, do what they are supposed to do, and go home, others see it as a place to spend half of their waking life and an opportunity to build socialrelationships.
2. Be Likable
Sometimes being open and honest about building a relationship with your co-worker wont getyou the response you are looking for. However, dont completely write-off someone who isntinterested in building a relationship.
Even if they dont want to engage and build a f riendly or social relationship, you may end upexcluding them or devaluing them, and that ends up creating a negative relationship andpossibly hurting the company. Instead, be sure to keep them in the communication loop and stilloffer assistance and support to work-related tasks.
3. Be Observant
Take a look at the companys culture and use that as one of the factors to inform their decisionregarding if and how to engage co-workers outside of regular work activities.
If youre unsure about inviting a co-worker to grab some dinner after work, or go out for a runover the weekend, why not start small and ask them out to lunch? You dont have a whole lot tolose and, if you have a good time, it can become a regular thing and help you grow as co-workers.
4. Find A Common Interest
For some, it can be a little awkward to get to know a complete stranger. However, most of thepeople who we consider close friends were strangers to us at one point. This can provide somerelief if you are feeling uneasy about befriending a co-worker you dont know.
Another way to make this a little easier is to focus on an interest you both have in common.
5. Dont Be Afraid To Aim A Little Higher (Or Lower)
Though it might be easier to build a relationship with a co-worker who holds the same workingstatus as you, it doesnt mean you cant try to build a relationship with a co-worker who outranksyou or even one you outrank in the company.
Mentor relationships in the workplace benefit both parties and the company gains when moreemployees are engaged and supporting each other.
Ranks in companies do change. The person who was once in charge of you may not be if youresomeone who plans on growing within the company. If the ranks between co-workers arereversed, having already established a positive relationship makes the transition run moresmoothly.
