sweetlyastheymoved.Thehatsofthemenwereblue;thelittlewoman'shatwaswhite,

andsheworeawhitegownthathunginpleatsfromhershoulders.Overitweresprinkled

littlestarsthatglistenedinthesunlikediamonds.Themenweredressedinblue,ofthe

sameshadeastheirhats,andworewell-polishedbootswithadeeprollofblueatthetops.

Themen,Dorothythought,wereaboutasoldasUncleHenry,fortwoofthemhadbeards.

Butthelittlewomanwasdoubtlessmucholder.Herfacewascoveredwithwrinkles,her

hairwasnearlywhite,andshewalkedratherstiffly.

WhenthesepeopledrewnearthehousewhereDorothywasstandinginthedoorway,they

pausedandwhisperedamongthemselves,asifafraidtocomefarther.Butthelittleold

womanwalkeduptoDorothy,madealowbowandsaid,inasweetvoice:

"Youarewelcome,mostnobleSorceress,tothelandoftheMunchkins.Wearesograteful

toyouforhavingkilledtheWickedWitchoftheEast,andforsettingourpeoplefreefrom

bondage."

Dorothylistenedtothisspeechwithwonder.Whatcouldthelittlewomanpossiblymeanby

aninnocent,harmlesslittlegirl,whohadbeencarriedbyacyclonemanymilesfromhome;

Butthelittlewomanevidentlyexpectedhertoanswer;soDorothysaid,withhesitation,

"Youareverykind,buttheremustbesomemistake.Ihavenotkilledanything.”

"Yourhousedid,anyway,"repliedthelittleoldwoman,withalaugh,"andthatisthesame

thing.See!"shecontinued,pointingtothecornerofthehouse."Therearehertwofeet,still

stickingoutfromunderablockofwood."

Dorothylooked,andgavealittlecryoffright.There,indeed,justunderthecornerofthe

greatbeamthehouserestedon,twofeetwerestickingout,shodinsilvershoeswith

pointedtoes.
