Congregation Sinai Receives
Irving J. Fain Award Congregation Sinai’ received a 2015 Irving J. Fain Social Action Award at
the Religious Action Center’s Consultation on Conscience, held in Washington,
D.C. April 26-28, 2015. The award was given to the Committee by the Commission
on Social Action of Reform Judaism (CSA), for the Committee’s initiative “MIKLAT –
Spaces of Refuge: Congregation Sinai Engages the New Sanctuary Movement.”
In making the award, the CSA noted the Social Action Committee’s
“outstanding initiative,” which caused the CSA to be “inspired by your congrega-
tion’s sense of community responsibility.”
Congregation Sinai’s Social Action Committee member and New Sanctu-
ary Movement participant, Rachel Buff, accepted the award on the Committee’s
behalf at the conference. Buff, with Committee members and conference at-
tendees Rabbi David Cohen, Edith Gilman and Diane Slomowitz, shared and dis-
cussed the Committee’s initiative at the Conference’s breakout sessions.
The Irving J. Fain Award seeks to honor URJ congregations that put Jewish
values to work in the world by:
Promoting social and economic justice
Fostering peace and constructive human relations, globally or locally
Relieving the suffering of the persecuted and downtrodden
Mobilizing to serve people in times of emergency
Defending civil rights and civil liberties.
Irving J. Fain, who passed away in 1970, was a passionate proponent of
social justice and of the Reform Movement's active commitment to the work of
tikkun olam, and served for a decade as Chairperson of the Commission on Social
Action. The Fain Awards, established in 1983 in his honor and memory, are award-
ed every two years to congregations whose work in the area of social justice is
exemplary. Specifically, awards are presented to congregations that have success-
fully involved large numbers of congregants in their social action programs or that
have developed genuinely innovative and/or particularly effective projects.

Last fall, Congregation Sinai became part of a na-
tionwide initiative called the B’nai Mitzvah Revolution (BMR).
The BMR addresses the fact that the modern B’nai Mitzvah
process is largely focused on the B’nai Mitzvah ceremony. It
was established with the hope of helping congregations find
ways to more deeply inspire B’nai Mitzvah students and their
families to partake in lifelong Jewish learning.
The congregational teams involved in the
BMR examine their current B’nai Mitzvah through
lenses of observation and experience. They also
share strategies for making B’nai Mitzvah ob-
servance and B’nai Mitzvah preparation more
meaningful and engaging, with the ultimate goal
of bringing families closer to Jewish tradition and
Jewish community.
At Sinai, our BMR team includes Rabbi
Cohen, Barb Shimansky, Judy Flegel, Tedd
Lookatch, Michelle Silverman, and myself. The six
of us have spent many hours discussing the strengths of our
B’nai Mitzvah program and examining ways in which we can
make it even better. Our greatest asset is that we make a
concerted effort to individualize the process for each student
and family involved. Rabbi Cohen and I strive to develop
meaningful relationships with each and every student so that
the ceremony is more about community as opposed to for-
mality. The challenge is ensuring that these connections are
maintained after the B’nai Mitzvah. We also make a concert-
ed effort to make the B’nai Mitzvah experience a family af-
fair, incorporating several family education experiences into
the process.
Through our work with the BMR, we are in the pro-
cess of launching several “experiments” to enable our B’nai
Mitzvah program to better meet the needs of the children,
families, and the congregation at large. You may have no-
ticed some of the subtle changes we have implemented over
the past year. For example, we have revamped our religious
school Tefillah to incorporate two levels of learning: On Sun-
days, we focus on prayer content and practice, exploring
pieces of our liturgy through a creative lens. These out-of-the-
box prayer experiences enable our students to develop an
understanding for how and why we pray. As they work to-
wards learning the words of the prayer in their religious
school classrooms or their tutoring sessions, they can grasp
onto the fact that Yotzer Or is about creation and Mi Chamo-
cha is about freedom.
During the week, we add an additional level of learn-
ing for our third through sixth graders: prayer literacy. On
Tuesdays and Thursdays, our students studying Hebrew in
the Mitkadem program participate in a 25 minute afternoon
service that is meant to teach the structure, order, and text
of our prayers. Rabbi Cohen and I often spice up the service
with commentary to make things more interesting, but the
core of the service remains the same. As the sixth graders
begin their B’nai Mitzvah tutoring sessions with me, I have
noticed a huge difference in their ability to read and recog-
nize many of the prayers. Many are at the point where they
are able to discuss core concepts in prayers, instead of just
learning them by rote.
In addition, we are lucky enough to be a congrega-
tion with a large cohort of teen leadership. This year’s
madrichim program was one of the biggest yet, and we are
working towards finding more ways for our older teens to
serve as role models to our students in the religious school.
We want our teens to model the fact that there
are many ways to be involved in the Jewish com-
munity once the B’nai Mitzvah ceremony is over.
In our family education program on Tzedakah, we
brought in older teens to talk to the B’nai Mitzvah
students about their Tzedakah projects. Seeing
the older teens participating in Tikkun Olam sets
up an expectation of teen engagement and gives
the younger kids an idea of ways in which they
can be involved in the Jewish community in the
future.
We hope that the Sinai community will
join us on Friday, May 22 to celebrate the achievements of
our tenth graders with our service of Affirmation. Affirmation
coincides with the festival of Shavuot, which celebrates our
receipt of Torah. During B’nai Mitzvah, our students gain the
privileges of Jewish adulthood and the ability to read and
teach from the Torah. During Affirmation, they demonstrate
the skills they have gained in Torah after several more years
of study. B’nai Mitzvah study is largely an individualized pro-
cess, while Affirmation is a communal one. The experiences
build upon one another, and it is our hope to emphasize the
journey that is Jewish education and to encourage our teens
to stay for Affirmation. The experience brings home the
themes that are just beginning to be touched upon during
B’nai Mitzvah study. We celebrate Affirmation during Shavuot
because it symbolizes a lifelong chain of Kabbalat Torah and
passing our traditions down from one generation to the next.
Our B’nai Mitzvah process is about to undergo one
more change with the retirement of our beloved tutor, Linda
Ross. Linda’s departure marks the end of an era for the Con-
gregation Sinai family. During her time with us, she has
worked with more than two hundred students, preparing
them with kindness, enthusiasm, and diligence for their B’nai
Mitzvah ceremonies. We will miss Linda and her husband Bill
dearly.
We are in the process of solidifying a team of tutors
who will begin working with our students in the coming
months. In establishing this team, we are keeping in mind the
core values of the BMR program and will work towards em-
phasizing that B’nai Mitzvah study is just one cycle of Jewish
life and learning.
Our BMR team is very excited to see how our pro-
gram develops over the next few months and years. We wel-
come your suggestions and input regarding the project and
look forward to continually improving lifelong learning here at
Congregation Sinai.
Warmly,
Cantor Lauren Phillips

Talkin’ About a Revolution: Exploring B’nai Mitzvah at Sinai
Page 4 May-July 2015
The Board of Trustees, Executive Committee and
Finance Committee have overwhelmingly endorsed a
change from our traditional dues structure to a voluntary
pledge program. I want to thank all of the members who
attended our Town Hall Meetings in March and provided
valuable input. We plan to vote to approve this program at
our Annual Meeting on May 17th and we encourage you to
attend.
The Sinai community is sustained by its members’
financial contributions. Those who came before us invested
in Sinai so that we might enjoy a vibrant community today.
So too, it’s our responsibility to consider members of the
Sinai community to be a sort of extended family, worthy of
our support and commitment. We are not a fee-for-service
organization. Instead, we are a community that values the
input of all its members; a place where we
apply Jewish values to every aspect every-
day so that the mundane might be trans-
formed into the holy; a community of cov-
enant whose foundation is formed by the
relationships we build between one anoth-
er. Further, it’s where we invest our efforts
so that those generations who come after
us will enjoy the vibrant Sinai we see to-
day.
President’s Message
As with any major change, we embark upon this with
high hopes but some trepidation. We certainly hope this ap-
proach proves successful and does not require us to return to
our traditional dues structure. We have confidence in our
members that support will continue at the level that will ena-
ble us to succeed.
We also want to acknowledge the tireless efforts of
our professional staff, our Board of Trustees and our Finance
Committee, specifically our Treasurer, Tom St. John, on the
remarkable job they all did in crafting a balanced budget. It’s
important to note that this balanced budget could not have
been accomplished without the efforts of Rabbi Cohen, who
has secured voluntary contributions from some of our mem-
bers to help reduce our structural deficit, but only for a limited
time. Which is why this transformation to voluntary pledges
and your support is so crucial.
On behalf of the entire Board of Trustees, we want to
thank you for allowing us the honor to serve as your President
of Congregation Sinai. It is an honor and privilege to be part
of this caring, warm and giving community. I look forward to
seeing you at the Annual Meeting.
B’shalom,
Dan Elias
Rabbinic Leadership
The most popular explanation for the prolonged
existence of the Jewish people is that the hostility of neigh-
bors precluded assimilation and kept us intact. An addition-
al interpretation is the quality of traditional Jewish leader-
ship. Rabbis were the intellectual peers of the community.
They were thoroughly familiar with traditional teachings.
They argued strenuously in the course of political debate
about the meaning of Torah, i.e. the word of God, and how it
applied to contemporary legal issues. They listened careful-
ly to interpretations that differed from their own and formu-
lated decisions that were consequence of mutual accommo-
dation.
To apply their method to the contemporary scene,
we might insist that entrants to the political arena have aca-
demic training in economics and political science. Familiari-
ty with literary classics would also be
of benefit. The rules of political de-
bate should preclude personal invec-
tive. Listening attentively and respect-
fully to oppositional views is a neces-
sary prerequisite to forging effective
compromise.

Lifelong Jewish Learning
Your family might be getting ready to put another
school year behind you and gear up for summer, but behind
the scenes of the Youth Education Program, we are already
looking toward the next school year and beyond!
Our congregation has been involved in a URJ project
called the B’nai Mitzvah Revolution (BMR). The
idea is that our team, comprised of Sinai lay lead-
ers and professionals, will examine ways that we
can retain more youth in Jewish life and learning
beyond the age of 13, and that we will develop
ways to do so that fit well for our community, ra-
ther than taking cookie-cutter ideas and trying to
make them work for us. We are part of a cohort
that includes 10 Chicago-area congregations, so
several times a year, we all have an opportunity to
meet together and share ideas, challenges, and
successes.
One of several goals we developed as a
team is to expand and deepen family education within our
congregation. To that end, our Youth Education Program
faculty are about to embark on a very exciting, year-long pro-
ject to re-imagine family education at Congregation Sinai.
Several times over the upcoming school year, our faculty will
gather to study, discuss, dream, and design, with the hope
of implementing something really exciting and innovative for
the 2016-2017 school year. That seems like a long time
from now! But we feel that if we are going to be thoughtful
and purposeful about this endeavor, we want to take the
time to really do it right.
Although we do not yet know how or at what point(s)
along the way, we will definitely be seeking input from our
Sinai families. After all, this will be to benefit YOU, the fami-
lies participating in Jewish education! Once we get started
and have a clearer sense of the direction in which we will be
moving, we will invite you to be part of the conversation, and
enthusiastically welcome your thoughts and insights. Stay
tuned for further information on all of this throughout the
2015-2016 school year!
More immediately, we have some great opportuni-
ties to celebrate the amazing teens in our congregation to-
ward the end of May. On Friday, May 22, I hope you will join
us for our service of Affirmation. Our class may be small in
size this year, but the contributions of these three 10th grad-
ers to our congregational community and beyond is incredi-
ble. Josh Lookatch is a member of our CoSY Leadership
Council, and Noah Borkin is a leader in his BBYO chapter.
Maya Goldbaum serves as our CoSY president, and you have
seen her leading the congregation in song during our Sun-
day morning Tefillah. Both Maya and Noah also spend Sun-
day mornings working as Madrichim in our religious school. I
have had the privilege of teaching their Affirmation class on
occasion, and their desire to engage with Jewish text,
thoughts, and ideas is inspiring. I encourage you to bring
your own children to this service so they can see where they
are headed in just a few years!
The following week, on May 30, we will celebrate our
graduating seniors and install our next CoSY Leadership
Council. We have four seniors - Eli Cohen, Jacob Cohen, Joey
Flegel-Mishlove, and Noah Lookatch - who have participated
in Kulanu this year – which is a particularly excep-
tional accomplishment, given that this was our
first year with an 11th and 12th grade program,
meaning that these four teens RETURNED to a
formal Jewish education program when they did
not even have one last year! All four of our seniors
serve as Madrichim on Sunday mornings, and two
are members of our CoSY Leadership Council.
This is also a great service to attend as a family,
not only to provide excellent examples in action of
youth engagement to your own children, but to
support and celebrate our teens who have
demonstrated how meaningful a role Judaism can
play in their young adult lives.
Wishing you a fantastic summer full of warmth, sun,
and great memories!

The word KOACH means strength in Hebrew. This widely popular adult
program brings together everyone from Milwaukee area newcomers, to semi
-retired and retirees, to members of synagogues, and the Harry & Rose
Samson Family Jewish Community Center.
Strength is an appropriate word because KOACH reflects the vigor of this region's Jewish community by
representing the J and six Milwaukee synagogues including: Congregation Beth Israel Ner Tamid, Congre-
gation Emanu-El B'ne Jeshurun, Temple Menorah, Congregation Shalom and Congregation Sinai. In this
unique partnership, programs rotate monthly between the J and the synagogues. The program provides a
delicious lunch and a stimulating and entertaining program designed for this special audience.

during Pesach, it was a morning filled with community build-
ing conversations and laughs.
One of the unique things about our particular sister-
hood is our diverse demographics. While many people think
of synagogue sisterhoods as being only for those past retire-
ment age, our Women of Sinai group is filled with women at
every stage of life. This brunch was representative of that as
we had religious school parents, clergy, empty nesters and
founding members of the congregation all gathered together
for good food and great conversation. So, if you think you are
"too young" to get involved with Women of Sinai, think again,
because you are missing out on a wonderful way to connect
with the women of your synagogue community!
After we ate, WOS Chair, Julie Lookatch, shared with
us a "State of the Sisterhood" address during which she re-
ported on the great success of the February Purse Auction
and some of the new ways that Women of Sinai has been
able to offer funding support for our synagogue community
including our new sponsorship of the fresh flower arrange-
ments that are used for the High Holy Days.
Members also began a discussion about whether or
not our sisterhood should affiliate with the Women of Reform
Judaism (WRJ), the reform movement umbrella organization
for sisterhoods, and talked a bit about exploring the ad-
vantages and disadvantages of affiliation at this time.
Finally, we discussed our current one-person leader-
ship structure, and Julie expressed her desire to have more
time to focus on membership and marketing concerns for
the synagogue at large in her new role as a vice president on
the Sinai Board of Trustees. Women of Sinai members were
asked to consider taking on some of the responsibilities as-
sociated with leading the Women of Sinai.
Volunteer Opportunities that are available for next year in-
clude the following:
Fall Event Coordinator - this could be a small gathering like
the time we painted pottery with the Cantor or a collabora-
tive event like the one we co-sponsored this year at the Jew-
ish Museum, main responsibilities would be coming up with
an idea and coordinating a time and place.
Spring Brunch Coordinator(s) - this person (or people) would
plan the Membership Appreciation Brunch by selecting a
menu and coordinating with the kitchen staff to make sure
the room is set up appropriately.
Fundraising Committee - after the success of the Purse Auc-
tion, and multiple requests by congregants to have a similar
event next year, we are looking for a person or group that
would like to plan this event.
If you would like to learn more about taking on one
of these smaller roles, please contact Julie at 414-379-
7878 or [email protected] so we can discuss your ideas.
Our sisterhood and our congregation will be stronger with
more of us working together to make great things happen!
And finally...thank you to everyone who paid their
WOS dues this year and made it possible for Women of Si-
nai to offer support to programs that affect the women and
families of our congregation. Thank you to everyone who
volunteered their time, donated purses and/or purchased
purses at our February Purse Auction. Some amazing people
fell in all three categories!
And thank you to everyone who attended a program
this year whether it was the Common Thread event at Jew-
ish Museum Milwaukee (JMM), the Maj Friend'zy we co-
sponsored with other area sisterhoods, the Purse Auction or
the Brunch.
We look forward to another great year together in 5776!

Help Nourish Homeless Youth Sinai’s Social Action Shabbat on February 13 featured Tim Baack, MS LPC, President
and CEO of Pathfinders, a multi-facetted not-for-profit organization that provides life-saving sup-
port for Milwaukee’s homeless youth.
A small but vital way volunteers can alleviate these young people’s daily struggle is to
provide meals at Pathfinder’s drop-in center. Meals can be pre-prepared or cooked on site in
Pathfinders’ state-of-the-art kitchen, and volunteers are always invited to break bread with visit-
ing youth. What a delicious activity to strengthen ties within our congregation and feed our city’s
most vulnerable.
If you are interested in engaging in this culinary mitzvah, either individually or as a
group, please email Shana Harvey: [email protected].
Mother Scott Interfaith Meal Program I am honored to be able to be a part of the Mother Scott Interfaith Meal Program. Sinai’s participation in this particular pro-
gram is truly an opportunity to make a difference in our Milwaukee Community. One of our congregants was able to take a
tour of the Center and see what actually happens once we deliver all the food that’s collected. Below is a description of her
experience.
“When I arrived at the Mother Scott Christian Center there were visiting University Christian Fellowship students from
a variety of colleges, plus a whole host of other volunteers and staff members, helping in whatever capacity was
needed. A group of people came to unload my car – working like ants – which took them about 10 minutes to re-
move what had taken an hour and a half to load. By the time my car was unloaded and I entered the facility, most
everything was sorted onto tables and ready to be inventoried.
While taking my tour, I learned that Mother Scott received a generous donation of a new kitchen which was in re-
sponse to Center’s need and constant use by the community. I was also delighted to learn that when Beth El Ner
Tamid closed, many of their kitchen ware were donated to the Center. It is good to see a community organization like
this being so well-supported in a neighborhood which truly needs the help.”
Thank you to our many volunteers that enable this holy work….and Congregation Sinai is doing its part for which I am proud to
be one of the many volunteers. If you are interested in joining this effort, please reach out to at 414-354-5961 or

a member of Women of Sinai and B’rit Nashim loving the relationships that she’s creating and nurturing.
Donna is also involved in many other Jewish community organizations: She’s been a member of the Board of Trus-
tees for the Milwaukee Jewish Corale and is currently President. She is also a docent for the Milwaukee Jewish Museum
among others.
Donna is thrilled and honored to be recognized as one of Sinai’s 2014/2015 Volunteer of the Year and looks forward
to many, many more years of active involvement in all aspects of Jewish Life at Sinai.
Sinai Volunteers of the Year!
Sam Golding My name is Sam Golding. I am the son of Anne and Larry Golding and big brother to my sister
Gina. I am a congregant of Congregation Sinai and have been since the 1st Grade. I celebrated becoming
Bar Mitzvah in March 2012. Today I am a sophomore at Hamilton High School in Sussex and am also an
Eagle Scout with the Boy Scouts of America.
Starting in October 2013, I worked with Rabbi Cohen, Karen Lancina and Brian Schermer from
the Green Team on a proposal to install a new playground at Sinai. I presented my plan to the Board of
Trustees during the March 2014 meeting and got the “go ahead” to begin work. Over the course of four work sessions involv-
ing my friends and fellow Scouts from Menomonee Falls Troop 175 an old playset gained new life as part of a playground at
Congregation Sinai. I shall never forget the outdoor service in late August during which the playground was dedicated!
In November 2014 I presented a summary of this project and “lessons learned” to three adult representatives of the
Boy Scouts of America Potawatomi Council during my Eagle Board of Review. At the conclusion of this meeting I was recog-
nized as having earned my Eagle Rank. Just a couple of weeks ago, my family and Troop formally recognized this through an
Eagle Court of Honor ceremony.
Leading and managing this project taught me much! I am very proud to have led this effort. I am grateful to have had
this opportunity to give to Congregation Sinai. In addition to scouting I enjoy participating in sports at school such as cross-
country running and Forensics in addition to club activities like rock climbing and Ski Club. I look forward to going on to col-
lege in a couple of years and studying engineering or computer science.

Josh Lookatch Josh Lookatch is a sophomore at Homestead High School. He is the son of Julie & Tedd
Lookatch and the brother of Noah (18) and Benji (12). Josh is currently serving as Chapter Moreh for
Solomon AZA #2444 of BBYO-Wisconsin Region. He enjoys drawing, graphic design and playing bas-
ketball with the Hebrew Nationals Intramural Team at Homestead. This summer, he is looking forward
to attending BBYO's International Leadership Training Conference at B’nai B’rith Perlman Camp in
Lake Como, PA, and competing in the Milwaukee Maccabi Games as a member of the Team MKE Flag
Football Team. Josh would like to thank Rabbi Cohen, Cantor Phillips, the teachers of the Kulanu pro-
gram and all of the religious school teachers he has had over the course of his Jewish Education here
at Congregation Sinai.
Maya Rose Goldbaum Maya Rose Goldbaum of Whitefish Bay is currently a sophomore at Whitefish Bay High
School. She is the daughter of Gordy and Jenni Goldbaum, and sister of Jayson Goldbaum (6th
grade). She is the granddaughter of Mimi and Terry Wittert, and she will always have a special place in
her heart for her grandparents who left us too early; Jay Werber, Gerald Goldbaum and Betsy (Bell)
Reiss. Maya has a deep love of theater and vocal music, and has been singing and acting on a regu-
lar basis over the last several years in productions at the JCC, Whitefish Bay Middle School, and now at
Whitefish Bay High School. You can also find Maya at Sinai each Sunday with her guitar, sharing and
teaching music with the different grade levels, and helping with the 7th grade class. Maya is deeply
involved in Jewish-teen life here in Milwaukee and beyond. She has spent 6 completely amazing sum-
mers at OSRUI in Oconomowoc, WI. This upcoming summer she will be heading to Israel with the
“NFTY in Israel Program” for the month of July. Maya is also highly involved in NFTY regional events (where she helps to song
lead), and is the current President of Congregation Sinai Youth. Maya’s future goals include becoming a teacher, remaining
involved in Jewish-life in college and beyond, and continuing to stay well connected to her Sinai family as she ventures out into
the world. She is very excited to be part of this Affirmation class where she has continued to take steps towards building her
knowledge of Judaism and developing her Jewish identity.

Check out all our Summer Happenings Here!
Summer at Sinai!
Bubbe’s Top Ten Reasons to Stay Connected to Sinai in the Summer
Because who can take the shvitzing heat in Florida. Welcome back to all you snowbirds!
Everyone should come and see the beautiful Sukkah Garden growing – sign up to help water – a mitzvah of course!
Have you ever come Saturday morning for a little Torah? Well you should! Then, enjoy a Shabbat walk with others. Believe me, exercise (of the mind and body) is a must!
Have you seen our kinderlach running around Sinai? Those adorable Itsy Bitsys give me such nachas for our future. I love to see their little tushies exploring our playground! Come pinch cheeks!
Dying to do a Mitzvah? (Not really dying of course...God forbid...poo, poo…) Sinai always needs a little something, maybe you could set up some outdoor Shabbat chairs, bring the staff a little nosh, see if there’s something to do. Give the office a call!
That Sinai Brotherhood – so young, handsome and athletic – God forbid they should be hurt at any of those Sinai softball games. You should see them play – so exciting! Look on the website for the game schedule—bring the family and picnic.
Come and hear the “Sermon on the Mound” at Softball Shabbat on August 28th – so inspirational, hilarious and it’s the Rabbi’s birthday! That means cake! There’s nothing better then the smell of hot dogs while you pray! I’ll be praying for relish and Alka Seltzer !
Wine and cheese, every Friday @ 5:30 PM beginning June 26th – is there anything else? Yes – Shabbat Services!
Oh that Rabbi strumming his guitar, and the Cantor singing so beautifully and our voices joining together in the great outdoors – it’s heavenly I tell you! I know because my Morrie can hear us!
Because community is everything and we should thank God for moments to celebrate and pray together.
