Sisterhood Zoom Torah Fund Event
Spend the evening with NESHAMA CARLEBACH. Neshama is an award-winning singer, songwriter and educator who has performed and taught in cities around the world. A six-time entrant in the Grammy Awards and winner and four-time Independent Music Awards Nominee for her most current release, Believe, Neshama has sold over one million records, making her one of today’s best-selling Jewish artists in the world. Neshama has been a cornerstone of major Jewish music festivals across the U.S. and globally, performing in front of thousands at countless concerts and gatherings for audiences of all ages and backgrounds. As a teenager she performed alongside her father, the late Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach. As the first then-Orthodox woman of her generation to perform for a mixed-gender audience, Neshama has sparked public conversations with brave forays into the place of women in Judaism and today’s world. Neshama lives in New York with her husband Rabbi Menachem Creditor, and their five children.
Jewish Theological Seminary students will also be featured.

2021 – May it be a happy, healthy New Year for All
If there’s one thing that most of us can agree upon, it is that we will not
be sad to see 2020 go! As we enter into a new secular year, many of us
are feeling exhausted and exasperated by the struggle, pain and
tremendous loss that has accompanied us during this past year. These
past nine months have “given birth” to a new normal that we wish
would simply disappear. We want a fresh start, a re-set, and we can’t
wait for things to go “back to normal” as we enter into 2021. Of course, we know that
the world does not work that way. Even with hopeful news of a vaccine on the way, we
all understand that it will be quite some time before we enter into a “new normal,” and
a daily life that we sense will somehow never be the same as it was before.
The secular new year is often filled with “resolutions” and things that we hope to
accomplish in the year to come. Some of us may be making lists of all of the things that
we can’t wait to do once we are in a safer place as a society. Others may be thinking
about goals that we want to set for ourselves as we enter into this new year. But my
question for us is slightly different this year. What have we learned from 2020 and what
lessons will we take with us as we happily put 2020 in the rear view mirror? During the
Jewish new year, we are taught to engage in cheshbon ha-nefesh, soul searching, and teshuvah, a changing of attitude, action, and perspective, as we look toward the year ahead. How might we apply those exercises from a Jewish new year, to this secular
new year?
When we take a few quiet moments to consider the enormity of all that we have
experienced as individuals and as a collective over this past year, let us ask ourselves
how this experience has changed our souls. What have we learned? What have we
come to appreciate? How have our perspectives on what is “important” in life shifted?
What have we come to know in the depths of our souls, about ourselves and about
our priorities, during such a trying period in the world? What has changed within us?
How have we “turned,” shifted our perspective, adjusted our posture toward friends,
family members, strangers, or even ourselves during this past year of COVID-19? And
most importantly, how might we take the lessons that we have learned during this
global pandemic, and use them to inform the way that we will enter, God willing, into
a healthier year of 2021?
May this secular new year bring much-needed health, healing, and blessing into our
lives and into our world. And may the year that has passed, a year that many of us
gratefully leave behind, serve as a motivating force and a spiritual guide, as we move
forward together, hopeful that there is a light at the end of this long and dark tunnel
through which we have been traveling.
Happy 2021 – let’s make it meaningful, intentional, and filled with sacred purpose.
Greetings!
I hope this finds you and your families healthy, safe and warm!
It is difficult to comprehend that we are welcoming the beginning of 2021. For many of us, these last nine months have passed with many new additions to our vocabulary and lives – Zoom, social distancing, masks, quarantine and COVID-19. The pandemic has changed every aspect of our lives, including how we worship. We are now connected, hopefully, in more ways than ever.
Despite the pandemic, we have plenty of good news to share:
Our Capital Campaign concluded on October 30, and surpassed our $1.5 million goal. A beautiful donor wall is being created to be unveiled in the Spring (if we are able to safely gather).
The Early Learning Center is thriving and growing – currently 24 students enrolled, with more families expressing interest on a regular basis.
Religious School and Hebrew High haven’t missed a beat, continuing to Zoom weekly, and incorporating special programs in between their Hebrew studies.
Our Zoom program offerings are bountiful. Check this bulletin and Pam’s weekly updates for new and creative programs and events to help get us through the winter.
Our financial position remains solid. We are grateful for our members’ continued support during these uncertain times.
Please know we are continuously looking to the future at CTE – whether it be creating new and interesting programs over Zoom, reaching out to all the congregants with a friendly phone call, or thinking about our reopening plans down the road.
As you can imagine, the pandemic’s effect on our congregation has consumed a great deal of my presidency. However, I am also focused on the transition of leadership in July. Not only will there be a change in Presidency, but there are a few openings on the Board of Trustees. If you are interested in participating on the Board and would like to learn more about it, please contact me or Pam.
It is truly an honor to represent CTE – whether it be as a Board member or committee person – to work together for the betterment of our synagogue. Our committee contacts are listed on page 2, and they would be thrilled to hear from you!
Be well, Laurie Gross 732-531-0511

MEET THE AUTHOR COMES TO ZOOM!
Concealed is a memoir of a Jewish-Iranian daughter caught between Chador and American values.
Esther Amini grew up in a Persian-Jewish household in Queens, the daughter of tradition-bound parents
from Mashad, Iran’s holiest city. She explores the little-known history of Mashad’s underground Jews,
the incident that steeled her mother’s resolve to leave, and her parents’ arduous journey to America, as
well as the conflict she feels between her indebtedness to her parents and her desire for more
self-determination than their traditions allow. Ms. Amini deftly weaves the themes of concealment and
visibility in this moving view of culture and family.
Esther Amini is a writer, painter and psychotherapist. Her work has appeared in Elle, Lilith, Tablet and
The Jewish Week. Her memoir evolved from an award by Aspen Word of an Emerging Writer Fellowship
in 2016. Her works have also been performed by the Jewish Women’s Theater in Los Angeles, where
she was the Artist-in-Residence in 2019.

YEAR-END TAX REMINDER
Pay Commitment, other obligations or Capital Campaign donations with Appreciated Securities You can contribute appreciated securities (stocks or mutual funds) held more than one year and obtain a Federal income tax deduction for the fair market value on the date of the donation. The advantage of doing this is that you avoid tax on the appreciation. For example, assume you purchased a stock several years ago for $1,000 and the value today is $2,500. By donating the stock you obtain a tax deduction for $2,500 no different if you wrote a check to CTE for $2,500. If you first sell the stock then you will realize a long-term capital gain of $1,500, incurring Federal as well as New Jersey income tax on the gain, as high as 35% combined absent any capital losses that would offset the gain. Pay Commitment, other obligations or Capital Campaign donations with transfer of funds from your IRA If you have attained the age of 70½, you have the ability to transfer up to $100,000 annually out of an IRA to charitable organizations, so called Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCD). This strategy works well for taxpayers who cannot itemize deductions for Federal income tax purposes due to the increases in the standard deduction along with the limit on deducting state income + real estate taxes. For 2020 the standard deduction for a single individual is $12,400 and increases to $14,050 if age 65 or older. For joint filers the standard deduction for 2020 is $24,800 plus an additional $1,300 for a spouse age 65 or older. If both spouses have attained age 65 the standard deduction is $27,400. A QCD is not reportable as income nor is a charitable contribution claimed for Federal income tax purposes. If a donor is unable to itemize their deductions and is required to receive distributions from their IRA due to having attained the age of 70½, the IRA distributions will generally be taxable with no tax deduction obtained for making charitable contributions. Using a QCD results in the IRA distribution not being subject to Federal income tax. If you are making a stock transfer before the end of the year, please email Pam and let her know what stocks you are transferring and how many shares of each.
As always, please discuss with your personal tax adviser to see what works best for you!
