CASE STUDY
A group of workers were carrying out palm fruit harvesting workin a plantation when the incident occurred. In the process of cutting thepalm fruit from a tree, the victim accidentally cut into a LV 3x95mm aerialbundle cable. The victim received an electrical shock through thealuminum pole which he had used as part of his cutting tool. Victim diedat the place of incident.

Electricity requirescomplete path to
continuously flow,normally through
conductor
Shock results whenthe body becomes
part of theelectrical circuit,
current enters onepoint and leaves at
another

Electric shock can only occurwhen contact is made
between two points of acircuit-when voltage is applied
across a victim's body
Aground faultis anaccidental connection
between a circuit conductor(aluminum pole) and the
earth (ground)
Special, insulated shoes are made to protectpersons from shock via ground conduction. The
gears have to be clean, dry condition to beeffective.
Though dirt is a poorconductor, it can conduct
enough current to injure or killa human being

EVENTS LEADING TO OCCURRENCE OF INCIDENT
other workers mightnot notice that thevictim had been in
contact with the livecable and causing
the victim in contactfor long enough for
casualty
that could act as aninsulator that limit
the current to avoidelectrical flow to the

That could alertthe victim aboutthe existence of

EVENTS LEADING TO OCCURRENCE OF INCIDENT
Every worker should be given a brief of safety measures andan instruction to perform emergency treatment before the
paramedic.
The paramedic was taking too much time to arrive to the scene asthe plantation was not equipped with proper emergency exit/road
for this kind of accident.

SUGGESTED WORKPLAN FOR SAFETY PROCEDURES
Wear personal
protective equipmentsuitable for the job
Always work in pairs
with maximumdistance from eachother is 5 meters
Indicate location of
any power cables inthe plantation beforestarts working
Keep safe distancefrom the power
cables
Checks allequipments used are
in good condition
Starts to work onlyafter all potential
hazard is identified
To avoid the incident from happen again, a new design of work procedureshould be followed by the workers for their safety

SUGGESTED WORKPLAN FOR SAFETY PROCEDURES
Wear all personal
protective equipment
Do not use anyharvesting
equipment that useselectric conducting
material as a pole
Do not harvest thepalm oil that is lessthan 1 meter from
the power lines
Put signs around thepower cables path to
alert all personals
All workers mustattend work safety
course and CPRtraining
Workers must beinformed of the
location of first aid kitand important
number to contactduring emergency
