Objective: Students will explore self discipline (strive to be thinkers) through goal setting. Students will be able to define short –term and long-term goals and the steps needed to reach longer term goals.

Lesson Plan:SMART Goals
Character Intro: Define self discipline/thinkersBrainstorm: What is a goal you would like to reach? What is a goal that you all have this year?Examples – Find out about clubs and sports in 6th grade. Read 50 books this school year. Learn how to open a combination lock.
SMART Goals: See SMART Goal Sign. Project for the class or write on an anchor chart.
Discuss the 5 components of SMART goal using the anchor chart posters. Students can work in groups to complete the SMART Goal sort. (Hint: the left side is SMART and the right is not)
Activity: SMART Goal Graphic OrganizerDirections – Ask each student to choose a goal. You can give a pre-selected list (see above) or students can write their own goals. o Divide into groups of 3 based on types of goals. Working in
groups may allow students to support each other in writing their SMART goals.
o Students can use the graphic organizer to think about their goal. Once complete, students will complete the Goal Card to display in the classroom, post in their planner, or keep on their desk. Tip: Print goal cards on card stock)
Extension Activity: Groups can work together to create a poster of one goal and the steps it would take to achieve the goal.
