PBL in the Classroom Mr. Scaringe’s government students took it

upon themselves to revamp the entire political

system by re-creating our political parties. Cri-

teria included posters to advertise the party

names, symbols, national convention sites, and

slogans. Each party was challenged to craft a

political party platform to outline major issues

to serve as the backbone of their party. They

also had to propose their plans for improve-

ment. This is a great example of group PBL

(project-based learning) that provided individu-

al assessments inasmuch every student was

assigned a specific role.

Mrs. Musick-Burchett’s fashion and textile

students have just finished their PBL unit in

which they made pajama pants and purses.

To enhance learning, the use of recycled fab-

rics was central to the project. Embedded in

the lessons were content objectives and dis-

cussions about limited resources, environmen-

tal stewardship, financial budgeting, creativity,

individuality, time management, and decision-

making. This unique approach coupled with

time-tested hands-on projects hit hard on the

all the state standards for the course. In the

end, all students were winners knowing they

possessed the creativity, talent, and mindset to

be productive.

A big thanks goes

out to School Promo-

tions students for their

(PBL) canvas CARDI-

NALS that are showing

up all over the building.

Keep ‘em coming!

Extra-Curricular Mrs. Ferguson is

pleased to announce that

National Honor Society

members have started a

service project that involves

Algebra I tutoring. Students

are matched up with NHS

members during their study halls, and one

NHS volunteer is available after school in

Room 249. Tutoring requests should be made

to Mrs. Ferguson.

Athletics Congratulations to Devin Walter who has

been named to the Indiana Coaches of Girls’

Sports Association Volleyball All-Star team.

Devin is the first Southport volleyball player to

earn this distinction. Coach Johnson relays

that this is a great honor and is very proud of

Devin.

The Southport Athletic Department is

pleased to announce that the NEST has been

a busy place during recent weeks. They have

hosted and celebrated several seniors who

have signed letters of intent to play college

sports. It is an outstanding accomplishment

that each of these students has earned an ath-

letic scholarship. Congratulations!
