St. Anthony of Padua Church www.sapparish.org 1st Sunday of Advent ~ November 27, 2016
On this first Sunday of Advent Jesus urges his
disciples to stay awake and prepare themselves for the Lord’s
coming. Good stewards prepare themselves and await Christ’s
judgment in joyous expectation. This kind of attitude requires
genuine spiritual maturity, the kind that is
cultivated by prayer, participation in the sacraments, loving
attention to family and one’s communion of faith, and love for
one’s neighbor. Are we prepared for the Lord’s second
coming? Are we ready to receive Christ? Are we ready to look
joyously for Christ’s judgment?

Benedict (c. 480-547) lived in sixth-
century Italy when the great Roman
Empire was disintegrating. He was
born in Nursia, in Umbria, a village
northeast of Rome. His parents sent
him to Rome for classical studies. Saint
Benedict became a monk as a young
man and founded a monastery high in
the mountains on Monte Cassino. It
was there that he wrote the Book of
Rule, a blessed rule of peace and stabil-
ity which teaches us how to live and
work together happily with God. St.
Benedict is often shown holding his
Book of Rule and a lighted torch,
which represents how he illuminated
others with his teaching. On his medal
the vertical beam of the Cross has five
letters, C.S.S.M.L., which signify the
Latin words, “Crux Sacra Sit Mihi
Lux” meaning May the Holy Cross be
my Light. He is the patron saint of
school children. St. Scholastica was his
sister. St. Benedict called his Book of
Rule “a little rule for beginners.” Some
of his writings include: ...speak the
truth with heart and tongue. If people
curse you, do not curse them back but
bless them instead. Do not grumble or
speak ill of others. Place your hope in
God alone. ...devote yourself often to
prayer. ...harbor neither hatred nor jeal-
ousy of anyone... Respect the elders...
Pray for your enemies. If you have a
dispute
with some-
one, make
peace with
him before
the sun
goes
down.

... dedícate a

What does the Catechism of the Catholic Church say?
Paragraph 524:
When the Church celebrates the liturgy of Advent each year, she makes present this ancient expectancy of the Messiah, for by sharing in the long preparation for the
Savior's first coming, the faithful renew their ardent desire for his second coming. By celebrating the
precursor's birth and martyrdom, the Church unites herself to his desire:
"He must increase, but I must decrease."
A voice of one crying out in the desert: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths.’” Mark 1:2

Our Mission Statement
The mission of Saint Anthony of Padua Parish is to develop an atmosphere for the members
of our Faith Community to live out the four-fold goals of the Catholic Church:
Worship, Word, Service, & Community.
Legion of Mary
Meetings are Saturdays 10-11am in the conference room.
All welcomed. The Legion of Mary is a lay
Apostolic association of Catholics who, with the sanction of the
Church and under the powerful leadership of
Mary Immaculate, serve the Church and their
neighbor on a voluntary basis.
Prayer for Priests
Dear Lord,
We pray that the
Blessed Mother will
wrap her mantle of
protection around
Your priests and
through her interces-
sion may they be
strengthened in their
ministry.
We pray that Mary
will guide Your priests,
dear Lord, to follow
her own words, “Do
whatever He tells you”.
(John 2:5)
May Your priests have
the heart of St. Joseph,
Mary’s most chaste
spouse. May the
Blessed Mother’s own
pierced heart inspire
them to embrace all
who suffer at the foot
of the holy cross for the
love of God the Father.
May Your priests be
Holy, as you are holy,
And through the power
of the Holy Spirit,
may they be filled with
the fire of Your love
seeking nothing but
Your greater glory
and the salvation of
souls. Amen!
St. John Vianney,
