Vocation Corner “Leaving high school, I didn’t know
whether or not I was called to be a priest. But prayer and
spiritual direction led me, and I entered seminary. I looked to
stories of the saints and examples of my parents as reasons that
led me to trust that God had a plan. I experienced falling in
love with Christ and above all peace in my vocation. The most
important lesson I’ve learned is to trust. The peace and
direction I have in my life are a testament to that. Others
trusted in me, which in turn allowed me to trust in Christ.”

Hello,
We extend our sympathy to the family of Robert Hartung. May he rest in peace.
This 5th Sunday of Lent we ponder John’s Gospel story of Lazarus. Along with Jessica Birks and Nicholas Urban, we
are called to look at the habits, addictions & sins in our lives that lead us to death rather than to life. Again, keep Jessica and
Nicholas in your prayers as we all take a look at ourselves so that we can look at others differently.
Jesus called out in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” He came out.
A humorous story about Robert Ingersoll, the famous 19th century agnostic, relates to today’s gospel. According to the
story, Ingersoll suggested to an audience of believers, that Jesus’ words, “Lazarus, come out!” were simply a prearranged cue to
have Lazarus (who feigned death) strut forth gloriously from the tomb. Emphasizing his point, Ingersoll said, “Why did Jesus say,
‘Lazarus, come out!’ Why didn’t he just say, ‘Come out!’” A man in the audience shouted, “Because if my Master had said that,
every person in that there cemetery would have come out!”
Apocryphal or not, the Ingersoll story clarifies the point of the Lazarus story: All the faithful will rise someday. - Mark
