Heritage Roof Works -

The first package won by McNealy

Brown as part of the St Pancras Station

Refurbishment included the Heritage

walkways to the main Barlow Shed

Roof.

The package consisted of three main

elements, being the Lateral Walkways

each approx 197 linear metres to each

side of the building, the Radial Access

Walkways following the roof line at

each gable end of the building, and

Parapet Handrails at the main roof

eaves, again running the length of the

building and resin fixed through

existing stone copers - all polyester

powder coated finish.

All details closely copied the original

‘Barlow’ design, the lateral walkways

being mounted on cast aluminium

brackets incorporating various

tolerance to combat roof movement

from its’ initial build.

All walkways were fitted with a

proprietary tested & commissioned

‘Mansafe’ system.

The walkway infills and stair

treads were galvanised open

steel flooring and the

balustrades designed to suit a

horizontal loading of

0.36kN/lin.m.

The walkway posts were

spaced to suit the main roof

trusses and incorporated

clamped handrail and

fabricated balustrade panels

housing ornamental feature

castings replicated from the

original design, this requiring

further weld testing and

certification for dissimilar

metals.

At the north end and to each

side are the main access

towers to the roof where

walkway platforms were built

around the towers and

included a retractable

extending walkway with

lockable gates extending over

the end of the building to

access the maintenance gantry

over the new transition roof.
