We cannot allow young people who have applied themselves, worked diligently, and desire to contribute to our U.S. society and
economy to be brutally turned away and sent back to their countries of origin where they may not know either the culture or the

FROM THE PASTOR
Praised be Jesus Christ!
At last Sunday’s Mass I ended up preaching about something that I had already planned on including in this bulletin series on Eucharistic belief and devotion, namely, the doctrine that Our Lord is fully present Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity under both kinds (in the Sacred Host and in the Chalice).
I explained that the words of the first consecration (“For this is my Body…”) make present the Body of Christ under the appearances of the Host, and the words of the second consecration (“For this is the chalice of my Blood…”) make present the Blood of Christ in the chalice. Because we profess along with St. Paul that: “Christ, risen from the dead, will never die again” (Rom. 6:9), then it follows that wherever the Body of Christ is, there also is his Blood, his Soul, and his Divinity. And wherever Our Lord’s Blood is, there too is also present his Body, his Soul, and his Divinity.
That’s why there is never an obligation to receive Holy Communion under both kinds, except for the priest who is actually offering the Mass. Whoever receives the Sacred Host, has also received his Precious Blood at the very same time!
I also explained last week that while recognizing that Holy Communion under both kinds is per se a fuller outward sign, my preference is actually to distribute Holy Communion to the faithful under one kind alone. I gave some reasons off-hand last week:
1. Holy Communion under one kind is actually the norm in the Church, and in practice it is far and away more common in Catholic parishes throughout the world.
2. In my experience, it helps keep the distribution of Holy Communion more organized, smooth, and reverent.
3. It greatly reduces the possibility of spilling or other accidents. It is just plain difficult to handle and distribute a full chalice with reverence and then wipe the rim (without getting too much of the Precious Blood on the purificator) even when one is being very careful. It honestly makes me nervous to do so myself.
4. It simplifies the sometimes lengthy process of the purification of the vessels, and makes it much more hygienic for me.
I tell people: Please have some sympathy for me when I have to personally consume the water for the purifications after everyone else has already drank from those chalices!
One further reason that I did not mention last week regards the Church’s principle that:
“The chalice should not be ministered to lay members of Christ’s faithful…where a notable part of the people continues to prefer not to approach the chalice for various reasons, so that the sign of unity would in some sense be negated” (Redemptionis Sacramentum, 102).
It has been my experience that far and away most parishioners in our parish actually prefer not to receive from the chalice.
Finally, someone asked me a good question during the past week. This person said: “Since Christ is fully present under both kinds, why did Christ institute the Eucharist under two kinds instead of just one?”
This is a great question, because it connects with some of the previous articles in this series.
Remember that the Eucharist flows from the Mass, and the Mass is primarily a sacrifice: the making-present-again of the sacrifice of Christ in an unbloody manner.
Just as Christ died on the cross through the shedding of his blood (the separation of his Body and his Blood), he shows this again in the Mass in a sacramental way by the two-fold separate consecrations, which in outward appearances demonstrate this separation of his Body and Blood in sacrifice.
In the hearts of Jesus and Mary,
Father Peter Van Lieshout
