To establish and maintain a national forensic DNA database in
order to perform comparative searches for the following
purposes:

To serve as a criminal investigative tool in the fight against crime;
To identify persons who might have been involve in the commission of offences, including those committed before the coming into operation of this ACT;
To provide the innocence or guilt of an accused person in the defence or prosecution of that person;
To exonerate a person convicted of an offence; or
To assist with the identification of missing persons or unidentified human remains
