2nd Sunday of AdventThe second candle lit this Sunday is a purple candle which represents peace .
It’s also called the Bethlehem Candle
ADVENTAdvent is a Latin word that actually means “coming.” Advent is time of preparation and waiting for the birth of Jesus. Adventofficially begins four Sundays before Christmas. So how can you celebrate Advent? One way is to buy or make an Adventwreath to lay on your table. An Advent wreath consists of greenery with four candles, three purple and one pink. Each candle onthe Advent Wreath has a specific meaning. To celebrate with an Advent wreath, you light a candle on each Sunday of Advent
Another way to celebrate Advent is to create an Advent calendar. The calendar reminds you to do something each day to sharethe meaning of the season. Celebrating Advent will help keep your children focused on Jesus and will give them day-to-day ac—tivities to help them share the meaning of the season.

THE LONG-AWAITED ONEAs the Sundays of Advent unfold the scriptures
shift focus from the final coming of the Lord to hishistorical birth. Today’s scriptures blend the two.Isaiah’s disillusionment with the kings of his ownday led him to envision an ideal king who wouldrule with divine approval and be led by divinewisdom. For centuries the Jewish people anticipatedthe arrival of that Messiah, who would usher in ablessed age when the whole world would finallydwell in justice and peace.
After centuries of such growing expectation, thepreaching of John the Baptist about the imminentarrival of the Messiah could not help but provokeintense interest. The Baptist’s message aboutpreparation for “the one who is coming” (Matthew3:11) makes clear that Jesus is, in fact, thelong-awaited one who is ushering in the new ageforetold by Isaiah and all the prophets.
TODAY’S READINGSFirst Reading — He shall bring justice for the afflicted;the earth shall overflow with the knowledge of the LORD(Isaiah 11:1-10).Psalm — Justice shall flourish in his time, and fullnessof peace for ever (Psalm 72).Second Reading — Glorify God by living in harmonywith one another, welcoming each other as Christ wel-comed you (Romans 15:4-9).Gospel — Produce good fruit worthy of your baptism;repent, for the reign of God is near (Matthew 3: 1-12).

SAINT JUAN DIEGO (1474-1548)
How well Mary’s own words describe JuanDiego: “God has cast down the mighty from theirthrones and lifted up the lowly” (Luke 1:52).Through him, for the diverse peoples of theAmericas, indigenous and immigrant, the Motherof God became known as their Mother, too.Cuauhtlatzin, his given name, means “One WhoSpeaks Like an Eagle,” and Juan Diego faithfullydelivered the Virgin’s request that a church bebuilt at Tepeyac where she had appeared to him.To the skeptical bishop’s request for a sign, OurLady showed Juan Diego roses blooming throughstony ground, despite winter’s cold. When heunfolded his filma to present them to the bishop, imprinted there was Mary’s image! Her blue sashand the flower over her womb were traditionalAztec symbols ofpregnancy and new life. But herfeatures were those of a mestiza, indicating mixedAztec-European heritage. Thus to peoples tooeasily prone to a “clash of cultures,” Our Lady ofGuadalupe remains the enduring icon ofunity-in-diversity, the fruit of our one baptisminto Jesus, her Son.

SAN JUAN DIEGO (1474-1548)
SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT
Knowing that Jesus is the one whom the people of God have longed for helps us understandJohn the Baptist’s strong words to the Pharisees in today’s Gospel.
They had the responsibility to lead people toward the right relationship with God yet they didnot practice what they preached.
John knew he was the one who was to prepare the way before the coming of the Lord, so hedid not prevent them from approaching him for repentance and urged them to live morefaithfully to God.
In Advent, we prepare ourselves for the coming of God. Not that He is not already in ourmidst, but to appreciate that His second coming is about the establishment of His Kingdom, not yet known in its fullness until the Lord returns in glory.
