SUSPENDED ANIMATIONLife DeathSeptember, 2015June, 2015

Marco Lambertini, the Director General of the WWF International has stated recently that “in less than two human generations, population sizes of vertebrate species have dropped by half.” This is no minor change. With so much death attributed in large part to human induced environmental change, such as habitat loss and global warming, it follows that a movement in landscape architecture / garden design will being to recognize the potential of working with / profiting from decay.

If you make a four-season garden you have to accept decay and see the beauty of it. It’s about the texture and shape, the seed heads and the skeletons. So instead of using the scissors you use your eyes. - Piet Oudolf

The hanging conifer trees of this proposal will slowly change in colour and form over the course of the summer. Beginning with dense and fragrant foliage, the trees will dry and drop all of their needles, representing the death of the tree, but the hope for new life.
