In 2013, TAFE NSW – South Western Sydney Institute (TAFE SWSi) reaffirmed its status as an award-winning provider of vocational education and training, with regional, national and international accolades going to our students and staff.
TAFE SWSi was named the Large Training Provider of Year at the 2013 Australian and NSW Training Awards, confirming our place among the nation’s best providers. These awards acknowledge our ability to provide quality training and highlight our strengths as an organisation.
During 2013, TAFE SWSi increased our higher education offerings and commenced delivery of the TAFE NSW Higher Education Associate Degree of Accounting. TAFE SWSi worked closely with the University of Ballarat (now Federation University Australia) to form an agreement to deliver the Bachelor of Applied Management (Design) in 2014, and signed a new partnership with the University of Canberra to deliver the Bachelor of Information Technology (BIT).
TAFE SWSi also continued to make a contribution to the community by meeting the needs of individuals, industry and local organisations. Our commitment to the delivery of hundreds of customised courses helped to build workforce capability and develop stronger communities.
In 2013, this included the development of a new initiative called the Trade Readiness program which is aimed at boosting apprenticeship completions. Other highlights included building stronger partnerships with councils, NSW Police, the NSW Department of Family and Community Services and other social and commercial enterprises.
I would like to thank all TAFE SWSi staff, our students and our industry and community partners for their contribution to a very productive and successful year.

completions by assessing people’s
suitability to undertake an
apprenticeship before they start.
The five day ‘Trade Readiness’
program was designed to give
senior school students and those
who have left school a chance to
demonstrate that they have the
skills and competences needed
to excel in an apprenticeship.
The program consists of four days of intensive hands-on training and assessment, with a fifth day involving literacy and numeracy screening, exit interviews, career advice and counselling. The program was initially trialled on young people interested in an apprenticeship in carpentry, plumbing and various automotive trade areas.
‘Trade Readiness’ focuses on skills including initiative, attitude, trade literacy and numeracy, hands skills and coordination.
