THE IMPACT➤ Creatures, such asthe sand hopper orien-tate their nightly migra-tions based on the

moon's position and brightness ofthe natural night sky. However, a study shows that artificiallights disrupt the lunar compass they use, when covering longdistances. ➤In some cases, this can lead them to traveltowards the sea and away from food; while in others, itreduces the chance of them venturing out on forays for food➤Researchers say this could pose a threat not just to thehealth of sand hopper populations but also the wider ecosys-tem, as they play an important role in breaking down andrecycling algae, washed up on strandlines

IN INDIA TONARROW DOWNPOST COVID-19'

'INEQUALITY GAP In a peculiar trend, the inequalitygap in India is expected to narrowafter the Covid-19 pandemic, evenas per capita income (PCI) is pro-

jected to decline by 5.4% during the on-going fiscal to ` 1.43 lakh, according toa State Bank of India (SBI) research re-port. This was attributed to the likelyhigher PCI decline of around 10-12% inrich states, like Maharashtra and TamilNadu compared to a less than 8% de-cline for relatively poorer states, like Ut-tar Pradesh and Bihar, the report said.

WHAT IS PCI: Per capita income is ameasure of the amount of moneyearned per person in a nation or ageographic region. It can be used todetermine the average per-personincome for an area or to evaluate thestandard of living and quality of life ofthe population.

HOW IS IT CALCULATED?PCI for a nation is calcu-lated by dividing thecountry's nationalincome by its popula-tion. It counts eachman, woman and child, even new-born babies as amember of the population.

ITS SIGNIFICANCE: The PCI of aneconomy is an important metric, as itindicates the standard of living andthe development status of a country. It is used by most global institutionsand rating agencies in their forecasts.

WHAT IS GDP? It is the monetaryvalue of all finished goods and servic-es made within a country during aspecific period. GDP provides an eco-nomic snapshot of a country that isused to estimate the size of an econo-my and growth rate.

WHAT IS GDP PER CAPITA?The Gross Domestic

Product per capita is ameasure of a country'seconomic output thataccounts for its num-ber of people. It divides

the country's grossdomestic product by its

total population.

HOW THE GDP PER CAPITA WORKS?A country's GDP is divided among agiven country's population to calcu-late its GDP per capita. It is a measurement of a country's standard of living.

According to the report, ittakes an economy longer torecover in PCI terms to nor-mal levels after a crisis, ascompared to an average offour years to reach pre-cri-sis gross domestic product(GDP)levels

A trick to mastera new language

There's one thing that separatesthe success stories from the failures when it comes to learninga new language. That's good

old consistency.People who practice their

language for 15 minutes beforebed have a major edge on otherDuolingo users, according tofounder and CEO of the languagelearning app – Luis Von Ahn.“Those people we know are goingto stick around for a really long

time,” von Ahn says. “We see them doingthat for a week, we say, “This person isgoing to be here for a while.”

Meanwhile, users who binge – spendinghours on the site, cramming in French orGerman or Chinese language lessons –tend to disappear fast.

That’s because, learning a language isa marathon, not a sprint. You cannot hopeto master a language in weeks — or evenmonths. So people who start out of thegate at full speed tend to burn out fast.

“If you are able to make it a part ofyour routine and space it out, that’s muchbetter than going nuts and cramming,”von Ahn says. "It is not a sprint. If yousprint, you will forget everything.” VonAhn says that he's currently learningPortuguese, and applying the principle ofconsistent, daily practice to his learning.

How families can make the mostof the extended stay-at-homeBy SONALI KHAN

It’s been a hundred days sinceschools closed. Young childrenwho ran down to the park orlaughed excitedly while zoomingpast on bicycles have been indoors

for an unimaginably long spell. As anxiety and workload build up and patience wears thin, families across the

board are struggling to keeptheir chin up. Perhaps this is agood time to pause. Put aside thedaily chores for a moment, re-assess your resource and energy lev-els and draw up a fresh plan to bringsome sunshine into your home whilethunderstorms begin to rage outside.

EASE UP ON YOURSELF

1Give yourself a pat on the back. It’sa tough time and you’re trying yourbest. So is everyone else.

Acknowledging this can also help youde-stress as you continue to care foryour little bundles of energy. When youfind that an interaction is draining you, step back. Take ten deep breaths. Walkto a quieter room and stretch your bodyto release thetension. Goup to thewindow andlook atsomethingbeautiful.Borrow somecalm from thebig, blue sky. THROW OUT A FEW RULES

2Yes, this is a time to create rou-tines that bring order and struc-ture to the day, but that doesn’t

mean you have to be rigid about it.The dishes or clothes won’t mind ifthey are picked up a little later, butyour children will certainly pull backfrom an angry parent. There is wis-dom in lowering expectations from‘perfect’ to ‘good enough’ right now.Being flexible will help your family manage this tough time.

RETHINK THE POWER OF PLAY

3Psychologist Dr Shelja Sen saysthat “fun and joy are

non-negotiable”. Sheoften advises parents toraise their playfulnessquotient to build astronger connect withchildren. Children learnbest when they are play-ing under the guidance of

an attentive, caring adult. The‘play-way’ of learning doesn’t needa lot of tools or toys and can beworked around your busy workschedule as well.

FLEXERCISE

4Exercise is important, especially right now, butyou can make indoor

movement fun and beneficial byapplying the flexibility principlehere as well. While you may ormay not choose to alternatebetween yoga, spot-running andweights, your kids will love a variety ofmovement activities. From tumbling or aspoon-and-lemon run to an obstacle

course or making up funny dance moves, tiny muscles, minds and funny bones canall be given a workout at the same time.

7As Sunday blurs into Monday you may find yourselfsuccumbing to the Sameness Syndrome. Similarly, your children may recoil from yet another online

Zumba class. Think of ways youcan break this up for your family and plan a few boredombusters. A good way to do thisis to think of your five senses.Try rearranging the layout of aroom or moving a few plants,

pictures or cushions for a visual change. Switch to a

different soap. Ask yourchildren to pick an ingredi-

ent from the kitchen and thenGoogle a new recipe. AAss CCooookkiieeMMoonnsstteerr ssaayyss,, nnoott aallll ccooookkiieess hhaavvee cchhooccoollaattee cchhiippss.. OOuurr
