Thisdocumentisinfiveparts:

TheGuidelinessetoutagreedprinciplesforDeakin’scampuslearningspacesandthegovernanceofapprovalsofproposalsforneworrefurbishedformalorinformallearningspaces.

TheTaxonomyclassifiesgenericteachingandlearningspacesusingcapacityandtechnologyfeatures,withindicativecostforeachaudio-visualpackage(table1)andexplanationofthecapabilitiesofeach.

Thenumberofeachtypeoflearningspacebycampusisintable2followedbyadescriptionofeachroomtype,withphotographsofexamples.Thefinalsectioncomprisesmaps of each campusshowingthelocationofinformallearningspaceswithamenities(power,computers,refreshments)andopeninghours.

Guidelinesforeffective,efficientandengagingcampuslearningspacesPrinciplesforLearningLIVEthefuture:Agenda2020encapsulatesDeakin'splantobringtheopportunitiesofthedigitalageintotherealworldofLearning,Ideas,ValueandExperience(LIVE).Deakinpromisestoeducatelearnersforthejobsandskillsofthefuture(graduateemployability)throughcoursesenhancedforhighlypersonal,engagingandrelevantlearningexperiences(premiumcloudandlocatedlearning).OptimallearningexperiencesatDeakin—whetherinthecloud,theworkplace,thelaboratoryoroncampus—maximiseengagementandinteraction,eveninthefaceofchallengessuchaslargeclasses,distanceandtimezones,diversestudentabilityandmotivation.Deakin’sgoalistoengageandinspirelearnersthroughhighqualitypersonalconnection—betweenstudentsandeducators,peersandthecommunity.AllDeakincoursesprovideconnectionwithanengagingandactivecommunitythroughCloudDeakin,aswellasaccessible,media-rich,interactivelearningresources.

PrinciplesforFormalandInformalCampusLearningSpaces1. Spacesshouldenableratherthanconstrainlearningandengagementthroughflexibility,

technology,accessibilityandcomfort(thermalandfamiliarity)forstaffandstudents.Spacesshouldbedelightfulandengaging,providingcost-effectivevisualstimuli.

2. Informalspacesshouldbeinvitingandporous,creatingasenseofcommunity.Bright,lightandairyenvironmentswithdelightful,relaxingareasthatstudentslovetobein.

3. Spacesmustbeupgradedsustainably,effectively(toagoodqualitystandard)andefficiently(throughwiseuseofresourcesandmaintainingviableseatingcapacity).

4. Designsareuser-centric,drivenbystaffandstudentsandwithadvicefromtheCampusLearningSpacesCommittee,includingexpertsin

a. teachingandlearning(Facultyteachingstaff)b. spacedesign(Facilities)c. technologyfit-out(eSolutions)d. spaceallocation(Timetabling)e. accessibility(EquityandDiversity).f. financialsustainability(CFO’sOffice)

5. Informalspacesshouldaccommodateusers’varyinglearningneedsduringandbetweentrimesters(e.g.,individual,group,examprep),andallowfordifferenttrafficflowsandtypesofactivities.

6. SpacesshouldenableinteractionsbetweenstudentsoncampusandintheCloudandinformalspacesshouldfacilitatecross-disciplinaryconnections.

7. Informallearningspacesshouldbeinspirationalandownedbystudents,encouragingthegenerationandsharingofideas,likeprofessionals.

8. Capacityneedstobebalancedwithfunctionality–reductionincapacitymustbecarefullymanaged.

9. Presenterdesksshouldbeunobtrusive,moveable,andcaterforpresenteraccessibilityneeds.

10. Powerprovisionshouldbeoptimisedtoenablefullflexibility.

11. Internalspacesshouldreflectnaturallightandextendintoinformalspaces,wherefeasible.

12. Allteachingspacesshouldhavebasicpowerandpresentationsystems,audioreinforcement(asappropriatetosize).Anappropriateproportionshouldhaveaddedcapabilities(suchascapturetechnologies,videoconference)andaudiointeraction(suchaspushtotalkmicrophonesforstudents).Technologiesshouldbeseamless,elegant,and‘justwork’,witheasyinstructionsandhelpreadilyathandwhenneeded.

13. Staffrequireimmediateassistancewhentechnologiesmalfunction,andongoingcapacitybuildingtouselearningspacetechnologiesappropriately.

StandardsforCampusLearningSpacesWehaveagreedtocallourtimetabledcampus-basedlearningexperiencesasfollows:

Wecurrentlyhaveseveralunalignedsystemsthatclassifygenericcampuslearningspaces:• Deakin’sInventoryoflearningspaces(eSolutions,showingtechnologiesinrooms)• DatafromArchibusandSyllabus+(Facilities)

Tosetclearexpectations,wehavedefinedataxonomyofgenericteachingspacesatDeakinforuseinallsystems(Table1).ThecolumnAVCodeistheonecurrentlyinuse.

GovernancePortfolioBoardhasdirectedthattheDeputyVice-Chancellor(Education)iseitheraValidatororExecutiveSponsorofallbusinesscasesrelatedtolearningspaces,bothformalandinformal,asadvisedbyDeakinPortfolioOffice.Toenablethis,theDeputyVice-Chancellor(Education)hasformedaPremiumLocatedLearningSpacesCommittee,nowrenamedCampusLearningSpacesCommittee,whichprovidesfeedbackonbusinesscasessubmittedtoPortfolioBoardthroughtheCampusLearningSpacesteamsite.

TaxonomyThetwocolumnsattherightoftable1provideanoverviewofthecostsofDeakin’sstandardaudio-visualsolutions.Theyareanindicativeguideonly.Costsforspecificroomsofthesametypevarywidelyduetoarangeoffactors,explainedinthecommentaryfollowingthetable.

Manycostcomponentsscalewithroomsize,suchasdisplaytechnology(e.g.LCDpanelcostcontinuestoscaleexponentiallywithsize),installationandcablingcosts,roomtreatmentcosts,soundsystemcosts,etc.

• ProjectscopeCostvariesdependingonwhether,andtowhatextent,theprojectincludes:electronicreplacementonly,electronicplusminorormajorroomremediation(e.g.acoustictreatment;fullrepaint,etc.),orcompletere-build.

• RetrofitvsnewRetrofitincurshigherinstallationandrelatedcosts,e.g.asregardscablingandotherin-wall/ceiling/floorinstallationrequirements,roomcondition,room-specificconstraints/obstaclesandresultingroom-specificdesigncosts.

• StandardvscustomAdditionalroom-specificdesigncosts/consultanciesarerequiredfornon-standardsolutions.
