Gender Discrimination

- By TM Sheethal P N

A very famous American author, Monica Crowley once said, “True equality means holding everyone

accountable in the same way regardless of race, gender, faith, ethnicity or political ideology”.

As the words under the quote go, it is very much necessary and indeed the need of the hour to actually

realize how important gender equality is and how big a problem gender inequality has become. God made

everyone equal but due to so many social and personal factors our world now is in the grips of this vicious and

poisonous sickness of inequality based on gender.

The problem of inequality begins right from our

childhood. We as children are always taught that boys are the

ones who are strong, adventurous and capable. On the other

hand girls are portrayed as sweet, naive and fragile. If a boy falls

down and starts crying he is pacified by his peers by saying that

crying is for girls and that boys don’t cry. The question that

arises here is why can’t boys cry? Aren’t they human? Don’t

they feel pain?

So, why the segregation?

Gender inequality is everywhere, be it in Education,

Technology, Jobs, Medical field, Parenting, Marriage and the list

goes on. Similar references can also be found in movies. The

actress is always shown as someone who needs to be rescued

and who always is in need of help. Such kind of a discrimination

makes us question whether feminism is actually relevant today

or not. As far as marriage and parenting is concerned, statistics

show that working women devote around 18 hours a week into taking care of the child as opposed to only 12

minutes a week, spent by working men. Such is the kind of gender inequality that surrounds us.

The discrimination in jobs, payment of salaries also speaks volumes of how bad the situation is!! If we

take the case of the highest paid actor for the year 2017, Mark Wahlberg, He earned $68 million while the highest

paid actress, Emma Stone earned only $28 million. The difference in figures clearly states that gender issues are

seriously affecting the way a democracy works. The main agenda of a democracy is to have equality for everybody

but what we witness here is something that questions the very foundation of democracy. As free citizens, we say

that we live in a democracy and we want to enjoy our rights as equals, but of what use is such kind of a freedom

where equality is only for namesake and is not practiced in theory.

It is said college years are golden years for students. Enthusiastic girls Join College with their plans and dreams,

hoping that they would make it big one day but they do not realize that discrimination based on gender can be a

serious problem for them on the path to success. A study by a Columbian university said that an instructor paid

more attention to what the boys had to say than the girls in classroom discussions. The girls in a classroom were

usually reserved and did not participate as much as the boys did. When asked questions to the girls in the case

study responded with words such as “perhaps” and “guess” which showed that girls due to the social stigma fear

to say things confidently and are unsure of what they have to say.

As Lao Tzu said, “A Journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step”. We need to step up against

this menace in our society by actively engaging inclusion and involvement of every single entity to make sure that

the light of equality touches every aspect of life.

The need of the hour is to be what we were ought to be!!

Temptation – a step closer to an end

- By Zameer Faizudeen

“Mom, Please Mom!! Please one more please!! One more Ice cream please mom!” On a day where it

was pouring cats and dogs.

“No! No son I know what is better for you?” my mom stood her ground firm.

We came back home and my Mom was very tired that particular rainy day, after her busy schedule at

college. And she dozed off as soon as she sat on a recliner. Taking advantage of the situation I rushed into the

kitchen and opened the Chini ka Dabba which I always knew was my mom’s piggy bank. Without her knowing ,

took ₹.20 and rushed to the ice cream wala and I was very much thrilled that particular moment, before my

mom could wake up I gulped the ice cream as fast as I can and rushed back home.

Next day morning I lay on my bed unable to get up with my body boiling hot. My mom put a wet cloth

on my fore head and smiled at me and she said, “I always know what is better for my dear” and I definitely

knew that she knew everything what had happened.

That was my first experiment where I understood,

Temptation always leads you to a step closer to the end.

Ever been in one of those weird situations where you say to yourself, “This is a terrible idea and not what I want, but I’m going to do it anyway”?

You have your goals, your dreams, and the habits you’re building. But, every day, you’re faced with a number of decisions that will either propel you closer to them or carry you further away.

Will you eat the salad you packed for lunch, or will you cheat and head out for fast food?

Will you work on the important project or goof around on the Internet?

Will you struggle through the day without your cigarette, or will you give in and put yourself back in square one?

Sometimes, you succeed and take a step forward. Others, you fail, and take a step back. But what dictates if you’ll succeed or fail when temptation strikes? How can you tell if, your willpower will carry you or not? Can you predict it?

Curiosity is the mother of invention they say, but curiosity is always innocent.

Page 14: Tech Mahindra Toastmasters Club...Tech Mahindra Toastmasters Club Volume 3 2017 1 A note from our President! Dear fellow Toastmasters, It is my great pleasure to share the third edition

Tech Mahindra Toastmasters Club Volume 3 2017

13

But when curiosity is no more innocent that is when all hell breaks loose, and that is what we call

“TEMPTATION”.

Curiosity is no big deal, you just want to know about something but Temptation usually is that longing

to do something you know you shouldn't.

We humans were created to enjoy heaven and rule the place, but what made us come to this world?

Answer is simple.

Being humans even Adam and Eve couldn’t resist their temptation. The lord almighty had given them

complete liberty to have anything and everything they wished for except that apple.

This temptation will not leave anyone stay contented or satisfied. Hence we are here just because of

that.

Temptation is like a telemarketer!

It comes to us when it is least convenient, it comes back again and again, and it keeps pushing even after you say “No”, it makes what it is selling sound so great but there is always a catch.

You grow up seeing all beautiful things around.

You give way to temptations, there you see drunkards.

You give way to temptations, there you see thugs.

You give way to temptations, there you see rapists.

Another relatable example, in recent days, people giving into temptations hence becoming pray to

games like The Blue Whale!! Stay Safe.

To be the righteous one in the crowd of mislead, you always need something close to your heart.

Whenever I get tempted with something I close my eyes and There I see my mom, telling me “Son I

always know what is better for you dear”, and she stands her ground firm.

“No! No son I know what is better for you?” And I know it’s time to resist if not for me at least for her,

just because she is everything to me!

For me it’s my mom, it may not be the same for you. But definitely you will have someone or

something which will make you live a righteous life.

Find that one thing for which you would never comprise and give way to temptation and lead a happy

life.

Color of love –

- By TM Sunil Pai What is your color, Oh love? Is there any attic where you hide it above?

Is it Red? The sigil of danger and violence, How can you be so violent? So cruel? And so heartless? Isn’t love supposed to overpower everything? How can you be red? Shouldn’t our world be devoid of these anomalies? So the red roses cannot be the eulogy of love. Not anymore. Then what is your color, Oh love?

Is it Green? The sentinel of flourishment and fervor, So you stay in plants and trees and in mosses, Isn’t love supposed to be anti-mosses, gripping, beautiful and pleasant? How can you be green? You stay forever unlike most of the plants and trees. So the signal of love cannot be green. Not anymore. Then what is your color, Oh love?

Is it Blue? The solace of melancholy and serenity, I can’t wake up every day feeling blue, why can’t there be more hues? And moreover you stay so far, far in the skies, how can I embrace you? The moon, the stars and the sun often tease me, we have a sky what’s your move? You stay in my morning blues and tumultuous evening melancholy, So the horizon of love with skies and oceans cannot be blue. Not anymore

Then what is your color, Oh love? Do u have anything to defend in your cove?

Then love replied, Oh my serenade? Love is a beautiful trigger not a grenade. I’m Red but not in violence but in bloodline stream, I’m Green not in mosses but in blossoming dream, I’m Blue not in your blues but with joy and peace in my team,

I’m in RGB, I constitute every saturation and hue Now tell me my serenade, which one is you? I’m here, there and everywhere forever. It is up to you to be a sullen or an eager-beaver.

Special Guest 1:

To describe Tech Mahindra Toastmasters Club in a single word, it would be Magnificent!

A club that has excellent speakers and able leaders, they are the ones who strive to make the

Toastmasters Club, an interesting place to be.

I like the idea of outdoor meeting, which is called

"Hatke", is indeed a Hatke initiative. This helps the

Toastmasters Bond together easier.

Picstasy contest that was organized recently at the

club, gave the Toastmasters a twist in the generic

table topics. It was well received and participants did

well.

I witnessed the contest unveil, and it was an

unforgettable experience.

Special Guest 2:

Toastmasters is an educational program. We get to learn so many things through the CC and CL

manual. But one of the best ways to learn is by attending meetings from other clubs.

I look forward to attending meetings at Tech

Mahindra for a lot of reasons. Here are a few of them.

1. Energy of the club: The club is enriched by the

presence of some of the most enthusiastic toastmaster

I have seen. That energy is contagious.

2. Lots of learning in every meeting: In one of the

recent meetings I learnt that as an evaluator I must ask

the speaker if he/she has read the entire project from

the CC manual.

3. Educational sessions: Club conducts one of the

best educational sessions around the Electronics City

area. I loved the sessions done by Rajashekharan, it

helped me in writing a humorous speech for the club level contest.

4. Collaborative nature: On numerous occasions members of Tech Mahindra have played roles in

the Electronics City Toastmaster’s club meetings, thereby advocating the collaboration between

the clubs.

Great going Tech Mahindra team! Looking forward to the attending more meetings at your club.
