‘Open-Heart Surgery’ is performed by opening the chest wall to operateon the heart.
‘ Open
’ refers to the chest, not the heart.
Open-Heart Surgery is used to bypass blocked arteries in the heart, repair orreplace heart valves, treat atrial fibrillation, and do heart transplants

Family history of heart problems
Recovery
Patient may spend few days in theIntensive Care Unit (ICU)
Patients will be moved to another part of the hospital from ICU before they gohome.
After-Effects
After-effects of heart surgery are normal.
Common after-effects are:
muscle pain
chest pain
swelling
loss of appetite
problems sleeping
constipation
mood swings depression
Full recovery may take 6 to 12 weeks ormore

• Mortality (Heart surgery is morelikely to be life threatening in peoplewith pre-existing conditions.)
