For Young Men of Color the ramifications are:
African American males:• disproportionally experience violence • Are 5 times more likely to be incarcerated than whites• have high incidence of chronic disease• have highest unemployment rate• disproportionally are placed in special education Latino males:• are more likely to live in poverty• have highest rates of high school non-completion• have highest rates of uninsured Davis, L. (2009) Reparable Harm: Assessing and addressing Disparities Faced by
Boys and Men of Color in California. Santa Monica, CA, Rand Corporation.
Global Learning Conference 2011
Approximately 50% of young men of color in our country’s urban areas (Orfield, 2004) do not finish high school. It is now well established that the human, as well as economic loss to us as a nation is both epidemic (Bridgeland, 2006) and catastrophic and has only worsened during economic recession ( Harrington, 2009).
Global Learning Conference 2011
Many of our young men are being pushed out of a school system that is not challenging to their intellect (Bridgeland, 2006), criminalizes them (Nolan, 2010), and exposes them to potential physical violence and emotional trauma. (Rich, 2009)
Global Learning Conference 2011
“Studies around urban stressors (racism and poverty) and exposure to violence suggest that many young men of color are experiencing Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).”
