The Baptism of the Lord
January 13, 2019
Why is there a Big Basket under the Crucifix on the Sanctuary Reredos? Have you been wondering? It’s filled with prayers from our community in response to the clergy
abuse scandal rocking our Church. As members of the Body of Christ we find ourselves standing in
solidarity with all who have been victimized; seeking consolation for the betrayal of our trust; hoping
for renewal of a faith that has been badly shaken; and calling for accountability from an institutional
church that has allowed and perpetuated this scandal. Trusting in God, we lay our cares, fears and
hopes at the feet of Jesus, for he is the true rock of our faith and the source of our healing.
Between now and Easter we will continue to add prayers to this basket (there are “Healing Prayer” cards in the Community
Corner and a special box for collecting them). These prayers will be used as fuel for our Easter fire at the great Vigil. Con-
sumed by the purifying flames of this holy oblation, they will find release – rising heavenward for healing, peace and recon-
ciliation – that we may rise to new life with and in Christ on Easter morn.

Can You Stay to Help After 10:30 Mass THIS Sunday? Many hands make light work and we’re hoping to make some light-work of removing Christmas from our worship space.
Check with members of the Liturgy Core Team in the Sanctuary; some of the trees will be staying in place until Lent, so we
need to make sure you’re not “harvesting” the wrong trees. Please adopt a poinsettia, “a flower of the Holy Night” (symbol
of the Star of Bethlehem). They are great gifts for neighbors, shut-ins, relatives, and friends. Please pick up one (or six)
AFTER the 10:30 Mass. We’ll provide plastic bags to protect your plant(s) on the ride home.
Care for Creation - Prophecy, Prayer, Participation
Thursday, January 17, 7 pm, Parish Center Join us for discussion and action at our first STM Care for Creation meeting of 2019! We look
at ways of dealing with the challenges of climate change and ways of reducing our carbon
footprint at home, work, and in our communities. Interested or have questions? Please con-
tact Lorraine: 651-644-3315. "Laudato si’ is not a document…Laudato si’ is a prayer, Praise
be to God”: so said Pope Francis' representative at the Climate Action Summit in California,
Sept. 2018 Augusto Zampini spoke of the "prophetic nature" of the document with its call to
rethink “how we produce, how we trade, how and what we buy, what we consume and
what we waste.” He said that the Vatican was a “tiny part of the church” and "...needed the
full support of all of you, of all your congregations and of all your institutions, schools, parishes..."
STM’s Justice in Action Committee Invites St. Thomas More’s Voice at the ISAIAH Convention on Immigration and Caring Economy
Saturday, January 19, 11 am, (Refreshments/Registration, 9:30-10:30 am) Mpls Convention Center (1301 2nd Ave. S., Mpls) REGISTER ONLINE
The Justice in Action Committee invites people of faith at Saint Thomas More to have their voices heard and their actions
counted as we look ahead to a new year and a new legislative session at our state capitol. As a member church in ISAIAH,
we want to show our support for the issues that matter to us, and which we will be carrying to the capitol as one of 200
member-congregations united behind one agenda:
Civic inclusion through driver’s licenses for all, including our immigrant brothers and sisters, and restoring the vote to
those with criminal records who have served their time;
Creating a caring economy with quality and affordable childcare and eldercare, and paid family leave
and sick time;
Climate justice and right stewardship of the planet we’re been entrusted with, and
Quality, affordable and accessible Healthcare for all.
We hope to bring the STM delegation to an event that includes training so we can become more civically engaged at the
capitol with our legislators and public officials on issues that matter to us, as well as to have the opportunity to meet some
of our newly elected leaders. Questions, contact Arline Datu, Justice in Action Chair: [email protected] or 651-207-7487.
Ignatian Spirituality Project Parishioner Andrew LaBarre led a retreat for 12 men from 5 different facilities across the metro on Dec. 29-30 at Dunrovin. ISP
is a national network of over 2 dozen cities in North America that provides Ignatian retreats for men and women who have
experienced homelessness and in recovery from addiction. Andrew said: "There is no doubt we made a positive impact in
the lives of those who are so desperately seeking out God as the solution to their sobriety." If you are interested in joining
the volunteer team, please contact: Andrew LaBarre (men’s team), 763-219-2832, [email protected] or Mary

Racial Justice and the Catholic Church
Sunday, January 27, 12-2pm, St. Peter Claver School Our next Racial Justice and the Catholic Church collaborative event with St. Thomas More and St. Peter Claver parishes will
be on Sunday, Jan. 27, 12-2 pm at St. Peter Claver School. We'll discuss the US Bishops' new pastoral letter on racial justice:
“Open Wide Our Hearts: The Enduring Call to Love - A Pastoral Letter Against Racism.”
Upcoming Bible Study Series All are WELCOME to come and explore Letters from Prison and open up to the world of St. Paul. Our next bible study begins
Thursday, February 7, 8-9:30 am, and goes for ten weeks. In these letters of encouragement, correction, and instruction
written from prison, Paul lovingly inspires and challenges us to greater discipleship. In Philippians, Paul calls on the com-
munity to rejoice even when difficulties and struggles abound in life. Paul offers Jesus himself as the prime model to follow
in his humility and obedience. Colossians and Ephesians have a number of striking similarities, including the depiction of the
Church as the body of Christ with Christ as the head. Colossians, however, contains a great hymn of praise to Christ as the
image of the invisible God, while Ephesians describes the Church as the spotless bride of Christ. The cost is $20 and is due
on the first day of the series. Register on our website, or contact Brian [email protected], 651-227-7669 x 311.
You are Called and We Need You!
The Faith Formation Commission is interested in recruiting an additional 2-3 members. Please prayerfully consider joining
this group of parishioners dedicated to advancing opportunities for Faith Formation in our community. Our group meets
once a month, and is responsible for researching and brainstorming new ideas and prospects for programs that will appeal
to parishioners of all ages. We support Brian Hefer, staff member, in promoting and enhancing educational, sacramental
and devotional occasions for all community members.
The time commitment is minimal and the rewards are great. We welcome all persons willing to share their time and talent
with our group. Current Commission members are: Mike Manerowski, Brigid Schuessler, Stan and Mary Karcz, and Carol
Ney. Please feel free to approach any of us to ask about our group! To express interest, please contact Mike Manerowski:
[email protected] or Brian Hefer: [email protected] or 651-227-7669 x 311.

Community & Opportunities
Call for Immigrant Support Donations The Catholic Church, Pope Francis and the Society of Jesus have long advocated for immigration reform in the United
States. St. Thomas More and its predecessor parishes, Immaculate Heart of Mary and St. Luke, have a lengthy history of
working with undocumented persons as advocates and supporters. St. Thomas More’s current work to support immigrants is
in need of your financial support. Our community acknowledges and respects the federal government’s obligation to protect
our borders and uphold our immigration laws. Nevertheless, we agree with the U.S. Catholic Bishops Conference that im-
migration principals should always be at the service of human dignity and the common good of society.
In July 2017, the Holy Family Apartment (HFA) was opened and has served multiple families. Through our volunteers, we
have accompanied these families and their needs, providing food and shelter, clothing, medical attention, translation ser-
vices, connections with community and immigration/asylum resources, legal counsel, education, and spiritual support.
Care has been provided by our STM volunteers and financial donations specifically tagged for immigrant support. Those
monies have been used for the remodeling and furnishing of the apartment and to bring it up to code, as well as to provide
the services needed for our ministry to guest families. Over the past year and a half since this ministry began, those initial
funds have been substantially drawn down and need to be replenished.
Here’s where you come in: We are asking you to consider adding support to our ministry. Can you consider a donation to-
day, or possibly an ongoing commitment through a monthly giving program? Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Donations can be made via check in the weekly collections by writing “Immigrant Support” on the Memo line. One-time or
sustaining donations can be made or set up securely via our website, www.morecommunity.org by selecting “Immigrant
Support” as the Fund to which you are donating. Thank you for your commitment and support.

St. Thomas More School News
Did you know that STM has a band, an orchestra, and a choir group? Recently these talented children performed for the
STM community! It was a wonderful way to celebrate the season and support our extraordinary musicians. Everyone en-
joyed this delightful concert!
Recently, the second graders participated in a STEM activity. The children worked in groups to brainstorm how they could
create the longest paper chain using only two sheets of construction paper, 12 inches of masking tape, a ruler, and scissors.
This was a great activity to use critical thinking skills! STEM stands for science, technology, engineering, and math. The stu-
dents needed to plan and design how they would construct their paper chain and then they would build the paper chain
and measure it. Afterwards, there was time to reflect on what went well with their design and what they might like to im-
prove on. This was a great activity to also build cooperation within a group. By the way the longest chain was 17 feet!
During the last week of school before Christmas vacation, the students all joined in a Christmas-Sing-A-Long in the school
auditorium! Mr. Steve Anderson was the guest pianist!
