Our History lesson for the month
January 20 1981
Ronald Reagan became president of the
United States at the age of 69, the oldest
president to take office. During his
inauguration celebrations, he announced
that 52 American hostages that had been
seized in the U.S. embassy in Tehran, Iran,
were being released after 444 days in
captivity.
“Don’t worry about
the world coming to
an end today. It is
already tomorrow in
Australia.”
Charles M. Schulz
Presidents Corner
At our last meeting we had a incident with a member bringing up personal business
and confronting another member. Although the meeting had not yet started, please be
aware that arguing about personal business doesn’t belong at our meetings or at our
events. These are not the places nor the times for personal arguments, harassment or
innuendos. Being President of this club I can and will remove anyone from a meeting
or an event that is behaving in this manner, and depending on the circumstances may
remove you from the club as well. Subject to the BUTH by-laws Article V –Membership,
Section 5.
For those of you who couldn’t make the December club meeting: We voted in a new
Vice President. We had 3 nominees, Greg Conrad, Jeff Singley and Curt Albrecht. It’s been
quite a few years since we actually had to “vote”. Thank you to all that were willing to step
up to the plate. With a tight vote, Curt won the election. Welcome aboard Curt.
2019 was an experience for me. I’m not the guy that likes being in the lime light. So being
President of a car club (with 110 members) I thought would be a real challenge. In reality
it wasn’t that bad at all. I had a few rough spots during the year, but a lot more fun times.
Don’t get me wrong it’s still a challenge but not like most would think. You’re asked to be at
certain events and to adjust your time more for the members who might need your
assistance. I’m enjoying this time with you all, the time running the show and I’m
looking forward to the new year.
Tom
Please welcome our new
sponsor BRG Dyno Services
located in Pacheco.
Adolph Keyes, Danny Myers and
Bob Webb from our club have
used them.
I should start with thanking the Boyz Under the Hood for allowing me to be Vice President
for the next two years. When Steph and I went to our first meeting we thought how
organized the meeting was and how family orientated it was and it turns out we were
correct. So let’s continue with that theme and have another great year of get-togethers,
car shows, cars and coffee, cruises and fundraising. Hopefully all done under the sun.

FEATURED CAR
Bob grew up in the Midwest where muscle cars filled more than half of his high school parking lot. Only a
few were Mopars including his 1970 Plymouth Barracuda Gran Coupe. The car suffered “mechanical setbacks”
during some “spirited driving” after high school graduation. Bob enlisted in the Army and left for basic training
less than a month later and then Korea afterward. He returned a year later and was “told” the car was
impounded by the county for ordinance violations and subsequently crushed for scrap! Bob never saw it after
leaving for basic training, but he still has fond memories and the title. He did not own another muscle car for
decades after that.
Fast forward to this decade. Bob and his wife Dawn were shopping for a new SUV for Dawn. Dawn caught
Bob staring at 2015 Dodge Challenger R/T and said, “You are always so practical. Why don’t you treat yourself
for a change?” Bob had a fever – and the only prescription was more [Mopar]. They wasted no time in opening
Pandora’s box and bought it. Bob made a few mods to the car then traded it up for a Challenger Scat Pack.
They traded it up for an SRT 392 model.
In 2017, they bought a 1970 Dodge Dart Swinger project car to tinker with. It is still in progress and almost
ready for paint. Then they found a 1971 Dodge Challenger, which he is currently restoring into an R/T clone.
Body and engine rebuild are done, but a few more projects need to be completed to become road worthy.
In early 2019, fate stepped in and a 1970 Plymouth Barracuda Gran Coupe crossed Bob’s path. The car was
already restored into an AAR tribute. Bob flashed back to his high school days and decided to fill that decades-
old void left by his missing car. They bought the car even though they are out of space to store any more cars.
1970 Dodge Dart Swinger, Top Banana yellow, 318ci, 727 TF automatic, Ford 9” 3.33:1
Restored 90% of interior, bodywork almost done, 360 on stand to be built
1970 Plymouth Barracuda Gran Coupe, AAR tribute, Moulin Rouge pink, 340ci, 727 TF automatic, 8.75” 3.91:1
Mostly done when purchased. Replaced fan clutch, only needs interior restoration
1971 Dodge Challenger, R/T clone, black, 440ci, 727 TF
automatic, 8.75” 3.55:1
Full restoration in progress. Body and paint are
done. Engine, transmission, and rear-end are
rebuilt and ready to go back in. Gutted the
interior and replaced every wiring harness in the
car. New soft parts ready for interior. New dash
pad installed. Rebuilt front suspension and
replaced leaf springs. Adding torque boxes and
subframe connectors. Hoping to be moving
under its own power before the end of the year
and “completed” by the end of winter.

Day 5 and we started our drive home. A very uneventful drive home. Cruising
along doing the speed limit (most of the time, darn pedal got real soft sometimes).
Was nice to be home even after the great trip we took. We drove about 1400 miles,
lots of seat time, lots of gas and oil, lots of fun and new friends. We decided to do
this kind of trip again next year.
Along the way, not sure where, but we had a person ask us why we were taking
these cars for this type of ride. My answer to that person was “Because we can”.
This is why we built these cars. To drive, show off and have fun in. They’re not
gonna be locked in a garage and only come out in the sunshine. If that upsets some
of you I’m sorry but that’s me. Thanks for reading the story, it’s one less item on
the bucket list. So many more to go………………………………NEXT.
Tom
This was an old road trip from
2012.

those that were. The February 11, 2020 meeting is the last day we (Boyz Under the
Hood) will accept your dues for the year. If you pay after that date your dues may
not be accepted as per Article 6 (dues) of the club By-laws. Please be aware of this.
After the problems we had last year, I have instructed the membership committee to
follow the By-laws. Hopefully this will avoid any problems like we had last year. Thank
you for understanding.
