2. Predecessors and Parents Confronted: Poeâs âThe Cask of Amontilladoâ and Bowlesâ âIn the Red Roomâ

The influence of Edgar Allan Poe on the work of Paul Bowles (1910-1999) has been a salient question
since the appearance of Bowlesâ first story collection, which he dedicated to his mother because she had read
him Poeâs stories in his childhood. âIt wasnât very good for sleepingâthey gave me nightmares,â he said.
âMaybe thatâs what she wanted, who knows?â In the shocking violence and horror of Bowlesâ early stories
it is easy enough to find echoes of Poe. âThe Delicate Prey,â for example, features a live burial scene that
recalls Poeâs âThe Cask of Amontillado.â But the lurid excess that mars Bowlesâ debut collection suggests
that he had not yet come to terms with his relationship to his predecessor (nor, considering the dedication, to
his parents).
We again encounter the ghost of âThe Cask of Amontilladoâ in a celebrated 1980 story by a much more
mature Bowles. âIn the Red Roomâ features obvious fictional stand-ins for Bowles and his elderly parents,
and a brutal murder whichâin contrast with the exhibitionism of Bowlesâ early storiesâthe narrator learns
about secondhand. The story is propelled by the same drive to confession as âThe Cask of Amontillado,â
but now Poeâs horror has been contained as a narrative within the storyâparadoxically heightening its
impact. (âIn the Red Roomâ appeared in The Best American Short Stories of the Eighties.) Through an
analysis of both stories, this presentation will aim to elucidate the relationship of the 70-year-old Bowles, as

he viewed it, toward both his parents and his nineteenth-century muse.
