It is said, ‘Love isn’t love till you give it away’.
When I was expecting my 2nd baby, my elder
son, then 3, asked me if I would love him less
when the baby came. I replied that as we give
our love away when we love someone, God
refills us. This is because he is the God of love and shows us just
how full of love he is Jesus. Jesus is God’s love in action.
Christians believe that God came to us in the person of Jesus to
show us how to live with love and compassion for others.
We learn about love first in our families and then our circle
widens with our friends. As we mature, we become ready for
romantic love. But do we move on to that love that is service to
others, or with hands to reach out to those in need?
In the month of February one date stands out with most of the
population – St Valentine’s Day – the 14th February. Valentine
was priest in 4th century Rome. The Roman emperor issued an
edict forbidding young men to marry because he wanted
committed, unmarried soldiers for his armies. Though marriage
was illegal, Valentine continued to wed young couples. He was
denounced and executed, but his sacrifice was not forgotten
and a later pope canonized him.
But was in the Middle Ages that his special day ‘took off’ in
secular culture. It was said that on this date birds sought their
mate and began to build their nests. Chaucer wrote about this.
In Wales beautiful wooden spoons were carved to give to a

special girl. Hearts were given by young men to their
sweet- hearts and to remember the saint who died to
protect the right of people to marry. It became the day to
think about love.
But perhaps this February 14th we could think of acting on
‘love’ in its wider sense in our community. Perhaps we could
we give to the Food Bank collection point at the Hub
(St Catherine’s), visit someone who is lonely, offer to help
someone who struggles with their shopping. This would be
‘love in action’.
‘A bell is not a bell until you ring it,
A song is not a song till you sing it.
Love in your heart isn’t put there to stay
Love isn’t love till you give it away.’
May we find in all our relationship this February
that Love has nothing to do with what we are expecting to
get – only with what we are expecting to give.
And as we give out love in this way, may we feel God pouring
his love into our hearts.

Worship and praise group.
Send us out for his praise and glory is a popular end to a Sunday service
so I have done just that and set up a worship and praise group in
Carnaby cafe in the town. A leap of faith from Lisa, opened the business
last Father’s Day and now employs 4 local people. Outreach is a natural
use for this welcoming place.
6 pm every Tuesday.
10 brave souls attended the first evening with Satan’s storm Brendan
trying his best to stop us! We prayed and sang and read scripture
together. Some ate and drank and others sat and reflected. The spirit
was with us and all retired refreshed. What a difference a week makes
this Tuesday was sunny and calm. Prayers of thanks went up for this
glorious day and all the little things that make our lives blest. Bible
readings and discussion radiated God’s love Live music again from Phil
and his guitar and worship songs a plenty, 14 people left recharged.
Only one thing was missing, YOU! God bless you all.

All in the month of FEBRUARY 150 years ago, on 17th Feb 1870 that the Elementary Education Act
(commonly known as Forster’s Education Act) was introduced in England and
Wales. It provided a framework for the education of all children aged
between five and 12. Many people objected to it, including the upper classes
who wanted to keep educational privileges for themselves, and employers
who feared losing cheap labour.
75 years ago, in Feb/Mar 1945 that Anne Frank, Dutch Jewish diarist and
Holocaust victim died in Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, at the age of 15,
probably from typhus. Known for The Diary of a Young Girl.
60 years ago, on 8th Feb 1960 that Queen Elizabeth II issued an Order-in-
Council stating that she and her family would be known as the House of
Windsor, and that her descendants would use the surname Mountbatten-
Windsor.
Also 60 years ago, on 19th Feb 1960 that Prince Andrew, Duke of York, was
born. He is the second son of Queen Elizabeth II.
Also 30 years ago, on 7th Feb 1990 that the Communist Party of the Soviet
Union agreed to give up its 70-year monopoly on political power.

Ventnor Park Weather Station
After over 30 years of observing the weather at this Met Office
climatological site, Mike Wood has decided to retire and hand over the
rains(!) to Chris Watts. Chris has also recorded the weather for many
years but at a variety of sites, more recently at the Botanic Garden since
2006. For the time being, Chris will now manage both weather stations.
Chris says ‘I should like to pay tribute to Mike for his dedication to what
is essentially a voluntary task, and to recognize the commitment required
to sustain such a role over all those years. Mike has visited the weather
station every morning to record temperatures, rainfall, wind, clouds and
visibility, a total of about 11000 visits! Did the pressure get a little bit too
much for you, Mike? Anyway, a big thank you for looking after Ventnor’s
weather for so long’.
Mike is now taking advantage of well deserved morning lie-ins, although
his services will still be required as a deputy when Chris is away from
Ventnor. So it’s not quite the end yet!

BONCHURCH EVENTS
Well Christmas seems rather a long time ago now but before we let
it go completely, I would like to comment on our Christmas Services.
On Christmas Eve we held our annual Crib Service. Several local
families came to this including one little girl who had been baptised in
Bonchurch a couple of years ago. She came dressed as Mary which
was lovely. We did something a bit different and played pass the
parcel. As each layer was opened another figure/character was
revealed until we had a complete stable scene. All the figures had
been knitted by ladies from our congregation.
Midnight Mass was well attended, and we welcomed many visitors.
On Christmas Morning we also welcomed a great number of visitors,
many of whom had a connection to Bonchurch which was most
interesting. One family came, whose great Grandparents were buried
in the churchyard. They (the great grandparents) had met at a ball at
the Twining’s house in St Lawrence. Our final service of the season was held at the Old Church at 3 pm
on Sunday December 29th. It was a simple service of carols and
readings of poetry and prose and was much enjoyed by all who
attended. The church was nearly full and everyone was sang their
hearts out which was such a joy to hear.
As ever the standard of music which enhanced our worship at all the
services was very high and we thank George our organist and our
choir for their wonderful efforts.
The Coffee Mornings will continue on the first Tuesday of every
month from 10am – 12 noon, indeed at the time of writing we have
already had our first one of the year.
