The Big Lie. The
root of every temp-tation is Satan’s as-sertion, and fallen man’s agreement,
that God is holding back on us, that true happiness and fulfill-ment lie somewhere outside of God and
his provision. When a believer cheats on his taxes,
he is saying I am not content with what God has given me, so I must take care of myself. When a man
cheats on his wife, he is saying he cannot find happiness and fulfillment with what
God has given him. When someone finds his value and his worth in what people think of him, or how
much money he has, or how popular he is, or what kind of car he drives, or where
he lives, he has suc-
cumbed to the lie
that his life is defined by things outside of God and his provi-sion.
Israel’s folly in the Old Testament was their belief that they had to worship the
local gods like Baal, or Ashteroth, or Dagon, to produce children and crops.
So for them, the only true God became just one of the choices of gods. Is-rael’s folly was their
belief that what they needed could be provided for by someone else other
than God. That lie produced and still produces a diminished view of
God and erodes a believer’s trust of him. That is why when Israel was
about to go into the
Promised Land, God
told them,
“When the LORD your God brings you
into the land he swore to your fa-thers, to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, to give you—a land
with large, flourish-ing cities you did not build, houses filled with all kinds
of good things you did not provide, wells you did not dig, and vineyards and olive groves
you did not plant—then when you eat and are satisfied, be careful that you do
not forget the LORD, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slav-
ery.” (Deuteronomy 6:10-12)

Satan tempts us with this bright, shiny, appealing lure with a hook on it. That temptation is to distract us from seeing who God is—his majesty and his glory, and his gracious provision and caring love for us. The
way to not get hooked on Satan’s big lie is for us to keep our eyes on him, to know God for who he is.
